Star Ratings Explained

Each horse has been given a star rating, these are defined below:

HHIII Unlikely to win but not totally without hope. HHHHH Selected to win the race. HIIII Can be given little or no chance. HHHHI Good chance of being placed. HHHII By no means out of the reckoning but at least one or two hold stronger claims

OFFICIAL BHA RATINGS EXPLAINED The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances). The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in nonhandicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating. For novice steeple chasers, the latest hurdle race rating may be shown until such time as the Handicappers allot a separate steeple chase rating. Such ratings are prefixed by the letter h.

RACE SUMMARY A very mixed bag and easy to put a line through most, with newcomer MUJTABA and form-pick Rani of Jhansi very likely to come to the fore. The latter has never been out of the first 3 in 4 starts, and should win a race, but was a tad disappointing at Thirsk last time, while the gelded Mujtaba is a son of Dubawi out of a smart winner in South Africa, and he could be a cut above. 1-2-3: 1.MUJTABA 2.RANI OF JHANSI 3.SHIP TO SHORE KEY colours

RACE SUMMARY COLD STARE defied a reduced mark at Haydock last time and a small rise is negated by his promising rider’s 3lb claim, so he’s worth a chance to follow up with the weekend’s rain in his favour. Miquelon could get loose on the front end, so he’s a danger, while Sir Plato regularly posts big efforts at this track, so his chance can’t be ignored. 1-2-3: 1.COLD STARE (IRE) 2.MIQUELON 3.SIR PLATO (IRE) KEY colours

LONGEST TRAVELLER: HANDYTALK trained by R Millman, Cullompton, 77 miles. RACE SUMMARY This looks trappy and the suggestion is HANDYTALK, who hasn’t fired on his last 2 starts but the handicapper has relented (down to a career-low mark) and dropping back to the minimum trip here looks a good move. The hat-trick seeking Secret Potion has to be high on the shortlist, while Bellevarde is holding her form well and it’ll be no surprise if she’s again involved in the finish. 1-2-3: 1.HANDYTALK (IRE) 2.SECRET POTION 3.BELLEVARDE (IRE) KEY colours
