Welcome to Chepstow Racecourse. A warm welcome to Day One of the Unibet Jump Season Opener. We are delighted that this fixture is now firmly established as the start of the autumn/ winter jumping campaign in the UK. This year we are racing for £400,000 of prize money across the two days – a significant increase of more than £150,000 on last year. Today’s feature race is the Grade Two £60,000 Unibet Persian War Novices’ Hurdle, a race named after an outstanding horse who won three consecutive Champion Hurdles from 1968 to 1970. For his first two championships Persian War was trained close to Chepstow racecourse by ex-jockey Colin Davies. The race named after him was first run at Chepstow in 2000 and has seen some high class winners including Silviniaco Conti and Blaklion (see page 19 for more background on this prestigious race). It’ll be exciting to see how far the last two winners – Thyme Hill and McFabulous – can rise up the ranks in the coming years. Some great old stagers line up in the Caroline Tisdall Supports Heroic Jumpers Veterans’ Chase and potential stars of the future go to post for the Paul Ferguson’s Jumpers To Follow 4-Y-O Hurdle. We are also honoured to welcome the family of Andy Stewart, the popular racehorse owner who passed away last month. We felt it was important to recognise his contribution to the sport and he was a good personal friend of mine. This will be our busiest fixture since spectators returned to racecourses in July and we hope all our customers have an enjoyable afternoon with us. Staging this meeting last year behind closed doors was one of the weirdest experiences of my working life! Many thanks to my excellent team of office, operations and ground staff who have pulled together to get everything into place for the next two days of superb racing, hospitality and entertainment. I’m fortunate to work with such a dedicated and committed group of people. Tomorrow we hold the £75,000 Wasdell Group Silver Trophy Handicap Hurdle, the feature race on Day Two of the Unibet Jump Season Opener. Gates open at 11am. Each horse has been given a star rating, these are deﬁned below:

HHIII Unlikely to win but not totally without hope. HHHHH Selected to win the race. HIIII Can be given little or no chance. HHHHI Good chance of being placed. HHHII By no means out of the reckoning but at least one or two hold stronger claims

OFFICIAL BHA RATINGS EXPLAINED The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances). The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in nonhandicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating. For novice steeple chasers, the latest hurdle race rating may be shown until such time as the Handicappers allot a separate steeple chase rating. Such ratings are prefixed by the letter h.

The first race of today’s Unibet Jump Season Opener fixture commemorates Andy Stewart, the prominent racehorse owner who died last month aged 70. His best horse was Big Buck’s, who set up a sequence of 18 consecutive wins in top flight company and won the Stayers’ Hurdle (then called the World Hurdle) at the Cheltenham Festival four times. This all came about after the horse blotted his copybook by unseating his rider in the Hennessy Gold Cup; reverting to hurdles thereafter, and running over three miles instead of two, he was much better over the smaller obstacles than he was before. But for injury requiring a year on the sidelines he might well have extended that winning run and added a fifth Stayers’ Hurdle. Stewart was born in Romford, Essex in 1951, where both his parents were doctors. Keen on racing as a youngster, and a fairly wayward one at that, he hitch-hiked to Liverpool to see the Grand National at the age of fifteen after being expelled from school. Luckily, he began to realise the error of his ways and found work in the City of London two years later. He worked his way up and made his fortune there as a stockbroker and investment banker. He jointly founded a business that grew steadily by taking over other companies. One day he was dismayed to find that a board meeting had been arranged on Cheltenham Gold Cup day. Realising the work-life balance was wrong, he left the firm he had created. It was only natural that Stewart should buy a few racehorses. He always preferred jump racing and Cenkos was his first really good horse. He was one of the leading two-mile novice chasers in 1999/2000, but was unable to win the next season. He was moved to Paul Nicholls’ yard and Cenkos won seven more races, beating Edredon Bleu in the Tingle Creek by 14 lengths after thrashing another Queen Mother winner, Flagship Uberalles, by a similar margin. Wanting to get back into

business again, he set up a new company and named it Cenkos Securities. Stewart and his new trainer got on like a house on fire and they enjoyed success with several more first class horses. Celestial Halo won a Triumph Hurdle and half a dozen Grade 2s from two miles to three as well as finishing a neck second in a Champion Hurdle and what is now the Stayers’ Hurdle. Pacha Du Polder won the Cheltenham Foxhunters twice after finishing fifth ridden by the former cyclist Victoria Pendleton. Le Duc, Le Roi Miguel, Phar Bleu, Napolitain, Nycteos, Gwanako, Oslot, Poquelin, Tataniano, Rocky Creek, Old Guard and As De Mee were Stewart’s other big-race winners. He was also a part-owner of 14-time winner Black Corton, renowned for its partnership with Bryony Frost. As Nicholls explained, “In the two decades that followed we won over 200 races for Andy and his family and over £5 million in prize money. At one point he had 25 horses with me, and he enjoyed going to Newton Abbot for a novice chase every bit as much as having runners at Cheltenham.” Horses also ran in the name of The Stewart Family and his wife Judy. One of his sons, Paul, was paralysed from the waist down in a snowboarding accident in 2008 and Stewart turned his attention to supporting spinal injuries charities. He continued to do so after Paul confounded doctors’ initial views that his condition was permanent by managing to walk again. Stewart’s most notable victory in Wales was that of Saphir Du Rheu in the Welsh Champion Hurdle at Ffos Las in 2014. His novice hurdler Thyme White won on the Friday of the 2020 Jump Season Opener. He kindly stepped in at short notice to sponsor a Chepstow meeting last November and named the races after members of his family and Rose Loxton, Head Girl to Paul Nicholls who died from cancer last year.

THE UNIBET PERSIAN WAR NOVICES’ HURDLE RACE (GRADE 2) The Grade Two Persian War Novices’ Hurdle is named after an outstanding horse who won three consecutive Champion Hurdles in 1968-70. He only just missed out on a fourth by being in less than tip-top condition when lining up for the 1971 race and coming up against another exceptional horse, Bula. For his first two championships Persian War was trained close to Chepstow racecourse by ex-jockey Colin Davies, but his owner was hard to please and the horse was moved to another stable. The race named after him was first run at Chepstow in 2000 and, being confined to novices and run over two and a half miles, it has proved to be a stepping stone for several future staying hurdlers and chasers. Silviniaco Conti won the race in 2010 and went on to be a consistent top class chaser, and though he never excelled at Cheltenham his 16 victories elsewhere earned over £1m. They included seven Grade 1s, notably the King George VI Chase on at Kempton in 2013 and 2014. One of the best Persian War Hurdles for producing future stars was that of 2014. The winner, Blaklion, would later win the RSA at Cheltenham, Aintree’s Becher Chase and finish fourth in the Grand National when favourite. The runner-up, Vicente, wasn’t at his best on the soft going at Chepstow and showed his true colours later by winning two Scottish Nationals. Thyme Hill was a classy winner in 2019. He was an unlucky fourth at the next Cheltenham Festival, beaten a length and a half after twice being denied a clear run. He has become one of the top British staying hurdlers, winning Aintree’s Grade 1 Ryanair Hurdle in the spring. The 2020 running went to Paul Nicholls for the fifth time in the last eleven years, with McFabulous (pictured above), who has since taken his career record to 7-13. He will probably be seen novice chasing soon. In recent times the race has been sponsored by Unibet and this year the prize money has been increased to £60,000.

This is normally an informative early-season contest and this year’s renewal looks no different. COEUR SEREIN and Camprond bring solid handicap form to the table and set the pretty clear standard. Silver Forever PAUL FERGUSON’S JUMPERS TO FOLLOW 4-Y-O HURDLE - HISTORY (FORMERLY FREE HANDICAP HURDLE)

The Free Handicap Hurdle for four-year-olds dates back to 1969 and was sponsored by Timeform for many years. Its most illustrious winner was Night Nurse in 1975, one of the all-time greats whose gameness made him one of the most popular horses in a Golden Age for jump racing. His 35 victories included two Champion Hurdles and numerous major steeplechases. He was second in a Cheltenham Gold Cup. Contrastingly, the 1977 Free Hurdle winner Levaramoss was a good prospect who later turned sour, frequently refusing to start and eventually being banned. 1983’s winner Ra Nova would go on to win Newbury’s Schweppes Gold Trophy (now the Betfair Hurdle), the richest handicap hurdle of the season, four months later. The photogenic grey Silver Streak, from the Evan Williams stable, won in 2017. It was the Welsh yard’s second success in the race in three years. With hindsight the future Champion Hurdle third and Christmas Hurdle winner was a certainty here, carrying just ten stone four pounds. Martin Pipe’s stable dominated the Free Hurdle in the 1990s but since then Paul Nicholls has been the man to follow with eight victories since 2002. The latest, in 2020, was Thyme White, owned by the late Andy Stewart, of Big Buck’s fame. The race is now sponsored by Weatherbys who used it as vehicle to promote Paul Ferguson’s popular publication ‘Jumpers To Follow’.

Paul Ferguson - Author of Jumpers To Follow Altior, Court Minstrel, Cue Card, Fingal Bay, Silver Streak and Thyme Hill. Those are just some of the familiar names who were successful at this two-day fixture in the early part of their careers and it really does signify the beginning of the National Hunt season ‘proper’. For that reason alone, it is a pleasure to be back at chepstow this afternoon, having been forced to miss last year’s meeting, due to covid restrictions, and we once again look set fair for a fantastic day of sport. The card gets underway with a 2m novices’ hurdle, this year run in memory of Andy Stewart, who sadly passed away last month at the age of 70. The owner of top-class staying hurdler Big Buck’s, Stewart was a loyal supporter and close friend of Paul Nicholls, so it would be fitting if the champion trainer were to land the opening race, with the exciting Knappers Hill. Unbeaten in three starts in bumpers, his career began at this fixture 12 months ago and his season ended with victory in Aintree’s Grade 2 Weatherbys-sponsored contest on Grand National day. He will be priced up accordingly, but is one of the most promising runners on today’s card. Last year, Stewart’s red, white and black silks were carried to victory in the four-year-old handicap hurdle by Thyme White and both myself and Weatherbys were delighted with the declarations on Wednesday morning. This is the seventh successive year that Weatherbys have sponsored this particular race and it promises to be a very competitive renewal. This is a race in which Paul Nicholls boasts a fantastic record, so Hell Red is an obvious contender. An impressive winner of the Juvenile Hurdle at this meeting last year, he finished runner-up to now stable-mate Monmiral at Auteuil before joining Nicholls and appears to appreciate a relatively sound surface. Nicholls would have had several options for this race, so it is significant that he relies solely on this grey, even from entry stage. One thing that Hell Red will have to overcome is a battle for the lead, as there appears to be plenty of pace on. Cabot Cliffs, Casa Loupi, Tinnahalla and Caldwell all like to go forward, so it could be a strongly-contested affair up front and one or two might have to drop in. It might, therefore, be that the race sets up nicely for one of the closers, with Herbiers and Elham Valley a pair who like to come from off the pace. The latter did just that when running on to claim third in the Boodles at Cheltenham in March and the extra yardage (due to rail movements) might well play to his strengths. Tactically, this could be a fascinating watch. Elsewhere on the card, the Grade 2 Persian War Novices’ Hurdle is the feature and again Nicholls, who could be set for a big day, looks well represented. He saddles the lightly-raced Paso Doble, who jumped well when winning over the minimum trip at Kempton in May and looks open to considerable improvement. Up For Parol is another speedy sort, who ought to appreciate the prevailing conditions, whilst Luttrell Lad finished fourth behind Knappers Hill at Aintree and made a winning start over hurdles at Worcester last month. Gyllen - 6yo bay gelding. Gyllen was owned and bred by Godolphin before joining Tim last season. He has been learning his trade and looks to be well handicapped and ready to make his mark for us. The Trainer..

Tim Vaughan Tim was once Welsh Point To Point Champion and rode over a 100 winners between the flags. He then turned his hand to training and in April 2012 became the youngest National Hunt trainer to record a 100 winners in a season. He is well-placed geographically between the two tracks and we look forward to working with him. Here are his thoughts on the horse.. ‘Gyllen is a highly rated horse off the flat who previously ran for Godolphin and produced some exceptional performances including winning a group 2 at Maisons-Laffitte over 1m2f. We took him jumping last season and kept him to the minimum 2 miles and he improved throughout the season but now that he is handicapped over jumps and he has worked out the change between flat and jumps which took him some time I am extremely hopeful that he will really start to thrive over jumps and win plenty of races for the Chepstow & Ffos Las Racing Club’.
