Star Ratings Explained

Each horse has been given a star rating, these are defined below:

HHIII Unlikely to win but not totally without hope. HHHHH Selected to win the race. HIIII Can be given little or no chance. HHHHI Good chance of being placed. HHHII By no means out of the reckoning but at least one or two hold stronger claims

OFFICIAL BHA RATINGS EXPLAINED The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances). The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in nonhandicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating. For novice steeple chasers, the latest hurdle race rating may be shown until such time as the Handicappers allot a separate steeple chase rating. Such ratings are prefixed by the letter h.

EDWARD BEVAN MEMORIAL Born and bred into a Herefordshire farming family, Edward’s love of horses and racing came from a young age, being competitive in gymkhanas. A loving, kind and warm-hearted family man, Edward loved to travel the world with his family and friends. Horses and racing were his passion; riding out virtually every day until the age of 70. The farming and racing having to fit into each other’s regimes; the potatoes tended to get planted after Cheltenham Festival and the flat horses he trained, turned out when the spuds were ready to be harvested and apples picked! Edward lived for a fun day out at the races with his wife, Janet, and many friends. “Win or lose, we’ll have some booze” being the standard motto! After a double win one day (with two horses trained by Richard Price) the horses made an appearance in his local pub, The England’s Gate, Bodenham, and had a celebratory drink! He owned, trained and bred in excess of 50 winners. The horses running up a notch or multiple wins, were always so well cared for. Edward had a sharp eye for picking a horse out of a claimer. Most notably Spring Pursuit, My Legal Eagle and Bold Cross; between them managing to win 34 races. He also enjoyed breeding a few horses out of his mares; the majority named after apples he grew and the most successful, Bold Duke, won four for Edward with multiple placings too. Edward, also known as Ed or Bev, had a sharp wit and dry sense of humour which led him to be admired and respected by all who knew him. He is survived by his wife, Janet, children, Claire and Nick and grandchildren, Jake, Maya, Joe and Monty.

KENNE TH COX 02/04/ 1931 – 30/ 1/2019

Kenneth Cox was an avid racing fan and a lover of horses. He could often be seen on this very race course working as a bookmakers clerk for his close friend Billy Dickens of D & D Racing. Kenneth also rode in point to points as an amateur in his teenage years, and was a regular contributor to the Injured Jockeys Fund. Kenneth was married to his beloved wife of over 60 years Patricia (06/02/1933- 08/02/2016). She worked in a turf accountants for over 35 years, so horse racing was a very big part of their lives.

An interesting bumper in which it might pay to side with BRESILIANT if the market speaks in his favour. He represents a stable enjoying a fine season and he has the pedigree of a potentially above-average recruit. Robinsville is another well-bred newcomer who demands respect, and Knowsley Road is open to improvement on the back of a pleasing Rules debut at Exeter. 1-2-3: 1.BRESILIANT 2.ROBINSVILLE 3.KNOWSLEY ROAD (IRE) KEY colours
