Star Ratings Explained

Each horse has been given a star rating, these are defined below:

HHIII Unlikely to win but not totally without hope. HHHHH Selected to win the race. HIIII Can be given little or no chance. HHHHI Good chance of being placed. HHHII By no means out of the reckoning but at least one or two hold stronger claims

OFFICIAL BHA RATINGS EXPLAINED The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances). The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in nonhandicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating. For novice steeple chasers, the latest hurdle race rating may be shown until such time as the Handicappers allot a separate steeple chase rating. Such ratings are prefixed by the letter h.

You must be 18 or over to place a bet You may be asked to provide proof of your age when placing a bet If you cannot produce this your bet will not be accepted

FOURTH RACE 6.20 TWO MILES ABOUT THREE AND A HALF FURLONGS (2M 3F 98YDS) FOR FIVE YRS OLD AND UPWARDS

THE DUNRAVEN WINDOWS HANDICAP STEEPLE CHASE (CLASS 3) Total race value £13400 x Owners Prize Money. 1st £5008, 2nd £2504, 3rd £1252, 4th £626, 5th £280. (Penalty Value £6535.20) Weights raised 7lbs and paragraph 34 of the Weights and Handicapping Code complied with where applicable.

RACE STATS LEADING COURSE TRAINER (17-22): C Tizzard (25 wins from 197 runners, 13%) runs L’AIR DU VENT TRAINER-IN-FORM (LAST 14 DAYS): Fergal O’Brien (6 wins from 43 runners, 14%) runs DUBLIN FOUR WEIGHTWATCHER: FINANCIER won off a handicap mark of 136, his rating is now down 6lb to 130. LONGEST TRAVELLER: FINANCIER trained by Kerry Lee, Presteigne, 61 miles. RACE SUMMARY

There were more encouraging signs from L’AIR DU VENT when third at Stratford last time and he remains well handicapped on old form. The 8-y-o remains relatively lightly raced over fences and can return to winning ways. Pink Eyed Pedro shaped as if back in form in the Topham and can give his running again, while Dublin Four was looking a big threat before unseating at Newbury. 1-2-3: 1.L’AIR DU VENT (FR) 2.PINK EYED PEDRO 3.DUBLIN FOUR (IRE) KEY colours

THE DUNRAVEN BOWL BY BRIAN LEE

WELSH HORSE RACING LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT AWARD WINNER 2020

Since the first David Brace OBE sponsored Dunraven Bowl was held in 1996 it has been the race all Welsh point-to-point owners, trainers and riders strive to win. The first running was won by Miss Millbrook and Evan Williams, giving the now leading National Hunt trainer the first of his three winning rides. His other wins were on Cherry Gold in 2003 and 2004. Bob Mason’s Cherry Gold was also successful in 2005 with Jason Cook in the saddle. West Wales’ leading rider Dai Jones was successful on Keith Pritchard’s Canon Bridge in 2006. Welsh champion point-to-point rider Rhys Hughes like Williams can also claim three winners of the race and these were Kilbreena (2007) the prolific Lady Myfanwy (2008) and Bob Bites Back (2009). Vale of Glamorgan’s Tom David was seen at his best when winning the 2010 renewal on David Lovell’s Master Charm. David’s late father was the legendary Cardiff bookmaker John Lovell who had introduced computerised betting to the UK and who had been a great supporter of Welsh point-to-point racing. First past the post by just a length in 2011 was Bob’s Law but runner-up Pathian Prince, partnered by Paul Tolman, was later awarded the race on Pathian Prince’s disqualification. The well fancied Rosies Peacock, who at the time had chalked up 32 wins, reared over on his way to the start injuring John Mathias so badly he ended up in hospital. Rosies Peacock was owned, bred and trained by David Llewellyn, brother of Grand National winning jockey Carl Llewellyn. He was favourite to win in 2011 but unfortunately the race was rained off. John Mathias from Pembrokeshire is the only rider in hunt racing history to boot home all six winners at a point-to-point, a feat he has achieved on two occasions. He was successful on Lee Power’s Gale Force Oscar in 2014 and again the following year aboard Desertmore View. In 2016 Claire Sherriff’s seven-year-old mare My Coranna, a winner of her four previous races, scored by three lengths from Repeat Business. She was trained by Ynysbwl’s David Gibbs and ridden by his son Bradley Gibbs. Repeat Business, who was owned by the late Jeffrey Bird and trained by his brother-in-law Jonathon Tudor, went one better in 2017 ridden by Richard Patrick. He beat Dewi Lewis’s Tinkers Hill Tommy who went on to win the 2018 renewal under Hereford born Peter Bryan. Not many female riders have ridden in the race and the two that have been successful are Wales’ most famous female amateur Pip Jones on Final Pride in 1997, and Welsh champion Fiona Wilson who won on the rank outsider, the mud loving Saffron Moss in 1998. As for the race’s sponsor Mr David Brace OBE, he saddled a third in Robin Des People and a fourth with Pink Eyed Pedro. However, his dream came true in 2019 when his homebred Pink Eyed Pedro, given a great ride by sixteen-year-old Jack Tudor who is now making a name for himself under Rules, romped home by eleven lengths from TheGirlFromMilan. It was said that the cheers from the crowd when his horse hit the front were louder than when Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother visited Chepstow back in 1975 and when her Sunnyboy won the opening Raglan Novices Hurdle.
