Star Ratings Explained
Each horse has been given a star rating, these are defined below:
HHIII Unlikely to win but not totally without hope. HHHHH Selected to win the race. HIIII Can be given little or no chance. HHHHI Good chance of being placed. HHHII By no means out of the reckoning but at least one or two hold stronger claims
OFFICIAL BHA RATINGS EXPLAINED The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances). The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in nonhandicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating. For novice steeple chasers, the latest hurdle race rating may be shown until such time as the Handicappers allot a separate steeple chase rating. Such ratings are prefixed by the letter h.
You must be 18 or over to place a bet You may be asked to provide proof of your age when placing a bet If you cannot produce this your bet will not be accepted
RACE TO
A CURE IN MEMORY OF GWILYM LLEWELLYN
Today’s race day is in memory of Gwilym Llewellyn who sadly passed away in May 2021, from a brain tumour at the age of 51 leaving behind his wife Cerian of 27 years, and his three daughters Shannon, Jessica and Olivia. Brain Tumour Research would like to thank Chepstow Racecourse for dedicating this event to our cause and hope today’s charity race day will encourage race goers to donate to help us find a cure.
Just

Brain tumours are indiscriminate; they can affect anyone at any age
Brain tumours kill more children and adults under the age of 40 than any other cancer

Michael Maine 20.06.56 to 31.07.16 Sadly my wonderful husband Mike died from a Brain Tumour in July 2016 aged just 60 years old. We moved to the Chepstow area for an “escape to the country” in lieu of retirement to enjoy gardening and our horses. Finding our dream home with land, stables and a large garden just gave us the “dream” and we moved in November 2012. After both getting cancer diagnosed within 3 days of each other in February 2015, our dream was shattered. I am still here to keep his memory alive but sadly Mike lost his fight with in July 2016. He loved his garden – especially owning his first sit on mower. He took early retirement so as to enjoy this beautiful home we had found. Mike and I have been involved with racehorse ownership for 17 years – with small syndicates as well as ownership. Our horse First Mohican, who we had a share of (retired) took us to Royal Ascot – which was an amazing day. My family – a daughter and son, and their partners are continuing to raise funds for Brain Tumour Research. If you wish to contribute to Brain Tumour Research please follow https://michael-maine.muchloved.com/ I am hoping this race, each year will allow us all to remember such a wonderful, kind and generous man. Thank you Sue Maine

RACE SUMMARY
SOME NIGHTMARE confirmed the promise of his opening pair of exploits this term when adding a third C&D success to his tally in April and a 5lb higher mark shouldn’t prevent another bold bid now. Michaels Choice who returned to his best on debut for Eve Johnson Houghton to score at Salisbury 2 weeks ago and Follow Your Heart are next best. Handytalk also makes each-way appeal returned to this venue. 1-2-3: 1.SOME NIGHTMARE (IRE) 2.MICHAELS CHOICE 3.FOLLOW YOUR HEART (IRE) KEY

BERNARD LLEWELLYN FAMILY FOR BRAIN TUMOUR RESEARCH AS LIFE Trainer Bernard Llewellyn is urging racegoers to support today’s Brain Tumour Research race day which is aimed at raising awareness and funds to combat the illness. The event is being held in memory of Bernard’s son Gwilym Llewellyn, who died after a very short illness just over a year ago. The race day is also in part a celebration of the life of Gwilym, who was a devoted family man as well as a keen competitive cyclist, one with a preference for distinctive bright pink cycling gear. “It was a huge shock to the whole family when Gwilym passed away and it still feels shocking now, over 12 months on,” says Bernard, one of Wales most experienced and respected trainers. “It was such a short illness. It was only two months or so from when he was diagnosed to when he died. “We are farmers and as such we are resilient people. But the shock of what happened goes on and that’s why we would like to raise awareness, and promote the funding of this disease, so that fewer families suffer in the future.” Supporters of today’s race day have been encouraged to celebrate the memory of Gwilym by wearing something pink – whether that be a vibrant pink shirt or dress, or eye-catching accessory. The best turned out pink punter will win a prize, with both ladies and gentleman’s awards up for grabs for the smartest or best use of the shade. Pink was also the chosen colour of Bernard’s grand-daughter Jess, an amateur jockey who adopted her late father’s favourite hue when she began her riding career. Jess, a university student in Cardiff, is a former winner of the Ladies’ Derby at Epsom on Nabhan and Bernard says: “She’s handled everything brilliantly. “She’s very into what she’s doing and we’re all very proud of her. She has a race at the end of the month at Haydock and it’s great to see her doing so well.” Gwilym was also a proud father until illness struck the family in March of last year – devastating the lives of Jess, sisters Shannon and Liv, as well as Gwilym’s wife, Cerian. What had begun as headaches and attributed to pain killers taken for a broken bone in his thigh suffered in a cycling accident, eventually turned out to be something far more sinister.
Y RAISE FUNDS & AWARENESS E OF GWILYM CELEBRATED A YEAR ON. Even when the symptoms persisted and were accompanied by vomiting, the cause was not suspected. It was only after Gwilym – who was just 51 – suffered a seizure and was rushed to hospital, that tests detected a brain tumour. “He was a very fit man, who was a strong cyclist – strong enough to finish in seventh place in a national event held in Bristol – so it was completely out of the blue what happened,” adds Bernard. “Part of the issue with detecting these brain tumours is that the research is not particularly well funded, given how common the illness is. “We want to raise awareness of that and make sure that more research is going on. It’s hard to believe that just 1% of the UK national spend on cancer research is dedicated to this devastating disease.” Brain Tumour Research is the only national charity in the UK singularly focused on finding a cure for brain tumours through campaigning for an increase in the national investment into research to £35 million per year, while fundraising to create a sustainable network of brain tumour research centres in the UK. “There’s a lot that needs to be done, so that’s why we hope it’s a well-attended event and that people come along to help reach those aims as well as to remember Gwilym,” adds Bernard. Bernard has been training horses for 40 years at his mountain-top base at Ffyonau Duon Farm, Fochriw, near Bargoed. He said: “I’ll admit I didn’t know anything about brain tumours until Gwilym was struck down. If we can prevent that from happening to any other family, that would be progress.” The meeting will also remember Michael Maine who died from a brain tumour in July 2016, aged just 60 years old. Mike and his wife Sue, from Shirenewton, were involved with racehorse ownership for 17 years – with small syndicates as well as single ownership. Sue is attending today’s fixture with a group of family and friends.
