Parade Ring

This is an ideal opportunity for racegoers to see the horses close up and assess their attitude and fitness The horses begin to parade 15-20 minutes before their race, and this is a great chance to pick your horse.

Placing a Bet

The Racecourse Betting shop is situated in the Grandstand & Paddock enclosure. The bookmakers are located in the betting ring in front of the main Grandstand.

The Weighing Room

This is located opposite the Winning Post and all jockeys weigh out here before each race. Their weight, including their saddle, should corr with the weight shown in today’s racecard particular horse in that particular race. Once race is finished, the jockeys will weigh in and weight must be the same as when they started. On racedays, four stewards ensure each race according to Jockey Club rules and regulations.

Winners Enclosure

After each race, the first four placed horses led into the Winners Enclosure where they ar unsaddled and the jockeys take the saddle weigh in. There are presentations by race sponsors to the connections of the winning on the winner’s podium.

Unauthorised Bookmaking

It is a condition of entry to this Racecourse that only individuals in possession of a valid betting badge and occupying an authorised pitch are entitled to lay bets on the course of their business. Any individual found contravening these conditions will be evicted.

“Due to circumstances beyond our control racing has had to be suspended, will you please evacuate the buildings by the emergency exits. You will be guided by members of the racecourse staff to specific assembly points, determined by which area you are in. OFFICIAL BHA RATINGS EXPLAINED

The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions

A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances) The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in nonhandicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating For novice steeple chasers, the latest hurdle race rating may be shown until such time as the Handicappers allot a separate steeple chase rating Such ratings are prefixed by the letter h.

The market should prove informative here but Chris Gordon certainly has his string in good nick and it could pay to side with PRESS YOUR LUCK He developed into a useful handicap hurdler last term and, with a pointing background, he could well be up to making his mark now tackling larger obstacles. Flash Collonges didn’t make the anticipated impact over fences last term but very much remains the type to make his mark this season.

Getting To Know - Evan Williams

Evan Williams and his family enjoy the summer, but not as much as the winter and the jump season when, as he puts it, “the mud is flying, and the days are short, and the flowers have died.” That’s poetry. And there’s more.

“That’s when we really come alive,” says the trainer “And it will be good to get back amongst it.”

Williams is one of Wales’ most successful National Hunt trainers and was always destined to join the field in top class racing, having been involved in Point-to-Pointing in Wales from a young age.

His daughter, Isabel, has become a successful jump jockey and his other daughter, Eleanor, recently started on the path as an amateur rider.

There will be few families as heavily involved in the new jump season as the Williamses.

Evan had his first ride back in 1989 and started training in 1997 and just continued to progress from there, getting his professional license in 2003/2004.

The Vale of Glamorgan-based trainer says: “I was always in the thick of it with my family. I loved it from when I was very young.

“It was just something we did. There was no real National Hunt scene back then, obviously. It was all very much centred on the Point-to-Point circuit.

“Back then, there were a few trainers who trained under rules. Dai Burchell had a licence and was very successful, Milton Bradley was very successful and locally, Bryn Palling trained winners.

“But it wasn’t as it is right now; things have progressed an awful lot over the last couple of decades.”

It is still a family affair in the horse racing business for Williams, whose household have always been involved in racing.

The trainer’s grandfather and parents all trained winners in Point-to-Points and under rules. Now he has his own family, it is only natural for them to be fully immersed in the family business.

“Horse racing is a very similar industry to farming, in a lot of ways,” he says. “It is not something that you dip in and dip out of. It is a lifestyle, it is how you live your life.”

The 51-year-old has been lucky to have his wife Catherine, his son William, and Isabel and Eleanor, to help alongside him at their yard in Llancarfan, near Cowbridge.

“We do what we do because it is our living, and it is our passion. The children and Catherine have always been fully involved in it.

“Whether it is a good day or a bad day, racing is what we do. We do what is best for that horse and try and get it to win a race.

“You live it together; you are all in it together, really. It is very nice when it comes off and you have a good day, you realise all the hard work that goes into it. But it is nice to have that support when it doesn’t go so well, too.

“We are very lucky that we can commiserate together and rejoice together.”

It was inevitable that his two daughters would end up in the field they had grown up in. But their parents confess they didn’t quite realise it would mean riding.

“It is very worrying when you see them ride,” admits Williams.

“I can’t pretend I find watching them ride very easy. But they enjoy what they are doing, and they have been doing incredibly well.

“It is not easy all the time, but it is great when you see them ride a winner because you know how much hard work goes into it. It’s magical.

“You never think they would end up riding. It was never the plan. We didn’t even think about it, really.

“The reality is there was work to be done and you all do the work and that is how it has always been.

“They have always been there to assist and they have always been a massive help. As they get older and they get more experienced, they are even more of a help.

“When I think about it, we are so incredibly lucky to have a strong family unit, who are all pulling in the same direction.

“I don’t know if they enjoy it, or they have no choice in the matter! But, they seem happy enough, anyway!”

Welsh jump racing both trainers and jockeys has been enjoying great recent success and Williams was always sure the talent and quality here would show on the big stages.

“I’ve always had a lot of faith in everybody associated with horse racing in Wales. It used to be very, very hard to win the worst Point-to-Point racing on top of a mountain in Wales. It used to be very competitive to do that.

“I am very lucky that from early on I was very aware of the quality you are taking on in the amateur sport.

“When they got the chance to go professional I’m talking about the Bowen boys, Ben Jones, Jack Tudor and Connor Brace they have gone from strength to strength.

“There’s a whole host of these young lads coming through now as riders and we

have a very strong bunch of trainers as well.

“They were always there; they were immersed in the Point-to-Point scene and it is fantastic that they have now been given the chance to show themselves on the big stage.

“It just goes to show what a brilliant breeding ground Wales is for jockeys. They have always been there in Wales and they have just pushed the boundaries further and further as they have gone far more professional.”

Such passion and enthusiasm for the sport and for training winners was evident at the Cheltenham Festival this year, when TV viewers saw an animated Williams after Coole Cody won the Craft Irish Whisky Co. Plate Handicap Chase.

The popular handicap chaser was ridden by stable jockey, Adam Wedge, and continued his success at the iconic venue.

Williams hadn’t had a winner there since 2006 but it is always a place where trainers are judged and he concedes: “Coole Cody has been quite a remarkable horse around Cheltenham. His record in all the major handicaps over two mile four, two mile five, is probably as good as any horse in the history of the sport.

“He’s won all those major two and a half handicaps in Cheltenham, so to go to the Festival and to win that meant an awful lot.

“It meant a lot to his owner and to the yard. They are very difficult races to win. It was great for us, it was a magnificent achievement.

“Any of those big races mean a lot. We have been lucky enough to win a lot of big races and every time you win a big race you realise how lucky you are to be involved as a yard and as a family.

“It‘s funny, really, because racing is every day. Professional sport is difficult and you just have to roll on and look towards the next race. There is not too much time to congratulate yourself.

“You are only as good as your last winner and people soon forget.

“So, I don’t wallow in it for too long.”

PERSIAN WAR

UNIBET PERSIAN WAR NOVICES’ HURDLE (GRADE

The Unibet Persian War Novices’ Hurdle is named after an outstanding horse who won three consecutive Champion Hurdles in 1968-70. He only just missed out on a fourth by being in less than tip-top condition when lining up for the 1971 race and coming up against another exceptional horse, Bula. For his first two championships Persian War was trained close to Chepstow racecourse by ex-jockey Colin Davies, but his owner was hard to please and the horse was moved to another stable. The race named after him was first run at Chepstow in 2000 and, being confined to novices and run over two and a half miles, it has proved to be a stepping stone for several future staying hurdlers and chasers.

Silviniaco Conti won the race in 2010 and went on to be a consistent top class chaser and, though he never excelled at Cheltenham, his 16 victories elsewhere earned over £1m. They included seven Grade 1s, notably the King George VI Chase on at Kempton in 2013 and 2014.

One of the best Persian War Hurdles for producing future stars was that of 2014. The winner, Blaklion, would later win the RSA at Cheltenham, Aintree’s Becher Chase and finish fourth in the Grand National when favourite. The runner-up, Vicente, wasn’t at his best on the soft going at Chepstow and showed his true colours later by winning two Scottish Nationals.

Thyme Hill (photographed) was a classy winner in 2019 for Philip Hobbs. He has become one of the top British staying hurdlers, winning Aintree’s Grade 1 Ryanair Hurdle last year

The 2020 running went to Paul Nicholls for the fifth time in eleven years, with McFabulous, who has since taken his career record to 8-17. The Hobbs-trained winner in 2021, Camprond went on to take a 24-runner contest at the Punchestown Festival with ease.

WEATHERBYS nhstallions.co.uk HANDICAP HURDLE

The penultimate race on the card is a 0-140 handicap hurdle over an extended 2m (there are an additional 96 yards added to races over 2m and 2m3f over the two days, due to rail movements) and although just half-a-dozen go to post, it looks to be a competitive contest.

This is the first of two races to be sponsored by Weatherbys over the two days and the weights are headed by Donald McCain’s See The Sea, with the mare seen most recently winning at Plumpton just 19 days ago She had Just The Man back in fifth on that occasion and as the only confirmed front-runner in the field, it could be that Peter Kavanagh’s mount is allowed an uncontested lead. That could be dangerous, but although both horses in question hold a fitness edge over the other quartet, they will need to improve again in this company.

Alan King’s mare Nina The Terrier won impressively on this card 12 months ago She was in fine form during the first half of last season and although she struggled in the Dawn Run at Cheltenham, bounced back to form with a fine second in the Mares’ Final at Newbury in April. She has won first time out in each of her two seasons and appreciates good ground, so conditions are in her favour and a big run seems likely

The third mare in the field is the Jonjo O’Neill-trained Holly, who is a horse that I am particularly looking forward to seeing return to action. A smart bumper performer in her native France, she appeared to need the run (and the experience) on hurdling debut at Uttoxeter last October, before winning a Wincanton maiden in a canter in mid-December We haven’t seen her since, but she returns on an appealing mark of 125 and could easily prove to be much better than that in time Off the track for 297 days, the hope is that she settles during the early part of the race, as the stiff finish will expose any fitness limitations. She is very much one to keep a close eye on and if today doesn’t happen to be her day, I will be disappointed if she can’t win something similar before too long.

The eight-year-old Monsieur Lecoq combined hurdling and chasing last season and ended the campaign with a handicap chase win at Newbury His last win over the smaller obstacles came almost three years ago, in the 2019 Welsh Champion Hurdle at Ffos Las, a race in which he finished only 11th of 12 before reverting to fences last October He has dropped 10lb since, but it could be that this race is being used as a springboard to going back over fences.

Finally, Sonigino represents Paul Nicholls and is another who has come down the weights in the past year Twice a winner in France, when trained by David Cottin, he raced freely and refused to settle at times last season, but did travel noticeably well on his penultimate start at Newbury A five-year-old with plenty of scope for fences, it seems significant that the champion trainer is prepared to run him in another decent handicap hurdle and this is his first start since undergoing wind surgery Therefore, it wouldn’t be a huge surprise to see him take a big step forward on last season’s form and he remains an interesting prospect.

A dual Grade 3 bumper winner in France, HOLLY appeared to have any amount in hand when landing a novice hurdle at Wincanton 9 months ago and she’s worth chancing off a potentially lenient opening mark on return. Sonigino represents a stable that usually enjoys success at this meeting, so a bold bid is expected, and Nina The Terrier is another one to be interested in.

He looks every inch a chasing type and is taken to make a successful debut in this sphere. Powerful Position did little wrong last term but he’s plenty high enough in the weights now and bigger threats may be posed by Favori de Sivola and multiple point winner Galop du Bosc
