Parade Ring
This is an ideal opportunity for racegoers to see the horses close up and assess their attitude and fitness The horses begin to parade 15-20 minutes before their race, and this is a great chance to pick your horse.
Placing a Bet
The Racecourse Betting shop is situated in the Grandstand & Paddock enclosure. The bookmakers are located in the betting ring in front of the main Grandstand.
The Weighing Room
This is located opposite the Winning Post and all jockeys weigh out here before each race. Their weight, including their saddle, should corr with the weight shown in today’s racecard particular horse in that particular race. Once race is finished, the jockeys will weigh in and weight must be the same as when they started. On racedays, four stewards ensure each race according to Jockey Club rules and regulations.
Winners Enclosure
After each race, the first four placed horses led into the Winners Enclosure where they ar unsaddled and the jockeys take the saddle weigh in. There are presentations by race sponsors to the connections of the winning on the winner’s podium.
Unauthorised Bookmaking
It is a condition of entry to this Racecourse that only individuals in possession of a valid betting badge and occupying an authorised pitch are entitled to lay bets on the course of their business. Any individual found contravening these conditions will be evicted.
Emergency Evacuation Procedure
“Due to circumstances beyond our control racing has had to be suspended, will you please evacuate the buildings by the emergency exits. You will be guided by members of the racecourse staff to specific assembly points, determined by which area you are in. Once there, please wait until the emergency services and/or racecourse staff tell you what to do”. Please see the assembly points clearly marked on the map.

OFFICIAL BHA RATINGS EXPLAINED
The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions
A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances) The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in nonhandicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating For novice steeple chasers, the latest hurdle race rating may be shown until such time as the Handicappers allot a separate steeple chase rating Such ratings are prefixed by the letter h.

Getting To Know - Evan Williams
Evan Williams and his family enjoy the summer, but not as much as the winter and the jump season when, as he puts it, “the mud is flying, and the days are short, and the flowers have died.” That’s poetry. And there’s more.
“That’s when we really come alive,” says the trainer “And it will be good to get back amongst it.”
Williams is one of Wales’ most successful National Hunt trainers and was always destined to join the field in top class racing, having been involved in Point-to-Pointing in Wales from a young age.
His daughter, Isabel, has become a successful jump jockey and his other daughter, Eleanor, recently started on the path as an amateur rider.
There will be few families as heavily involved in the new jump season as the Williamses.
Evan had his first ride back in 1989 and started training in 1997 and just continued to progress from there, getting his professional license in 2003/2004.
The Vale of Glamorgan-based trainer says: “I was always in the thick of it with my family. I loved it from when I was very young.
“It was just something we did. There was no real National Hunt scene back then, obviously. It was all very much centred on the Point-to-Point circuit.
“Back then, there were a few trainers who trained under rules. Dai Burchell had a licence and was very successful, Milton Bradley was very successful and locally, Bryn Palling trained winners.
“But it wasn’t as it is right now; things have progressed an awful lot over the last couple of decades.”
It is still a family affair in the horse racing business for Williams, whose household have always been involved in racing.
The trainer’s grandfather and parents all trained winners in Point-to-Points and under rules. Now he has his own family, it is only natural for them to be fully immersed in the family business.
“Horse racing is a very similar industry to farming, in a lot of ways,” he says. “It is not something that you dip in and dip out of. It is a lifestyle, it is how you live your life.”
The 51-year-old has been lucky to have his wife Catherine, his son William, and Isabel and Eleanor, to help alongside him at their yard in Llancarfan, near Cowbridge.
“We do what we do because it is our living, and it is our passion. The children and Catherine have always been fully involved in it.
“Whether it is a good day or a bad day, racing is what we do. We do what is best for that horse and try and get it to win a race.
“You live it together; you are all in it together, really. It is very nice when it comes off and you have a good day, you realise all the hard work that goes into it. But it is nice to have that support when it doesn’t go so well, too.
“We are very lucky that we can commiserate together and rejoice together.”
It was inevitable that his two daughters would end up in the field they had grown up in. But their parents confess they didn’t quite realise it would mean riding.
“It is very worrying when you see them ride,” admits Williams.
“I can’t pretend I find watching them ride very easy. But they enjoy what they are doing, and they have been doing incredibly well.
“It is not easy all the time, but it is great when you see them ride a winner because you know how much hard work goes into it. It’s magical.
“You never think they would end up riding. It was never the plan. We didn’t even think about it, really.
“The reality is there was work to be done and you all do the work and that is how it has always been.
“They have always been there to assist and they have always been a massive help. As they get older and they get more experienced, they are even more of a help.
“When I think about it, we are so incredibly lucky to have a strong family unit, who are all pulling in the same direction.
“I don’t know if they enjoy it, or they have no choice in the matter! But, they seem happy enough, anyway!”
Welsh jump racing both trainers and jockeys has been enjoying great recent success and Williams was always sure the talent and quality here would show on the big stages.
“I’ve always had a lot of faith in everybody associated with horse racing in Wales. It used to be very, very hard to win the worst Point-to-Point racing on top of a mountain in Wales. It used to be very competitive to do that.
“I am very lucky that from early on I was very aware of the quality you are taking on in the amateur sport.
“When they got the chance to go professional I’m talking about the Bowen boys, Ben Jones, Jack Tudor and Connor Brace they have gone from strength to strength.
“There’s a whole host of these young lads coming through now as riders and we
have a very strong bunch of trainers as well.
“They were always there; they were immersed in the Point-to-Point scene and it is fantastic that they have now been given the chance to show themselves on the big stage.
“It just goes to show what a brilliant breeding ground Wales is for jockeys. They have always been there in Wales and they have just pushed the boundaries further and further as they have gone far more professional.”
Such passion and enthusiasm for the sport and for training winners was evident at the Cheltenham Festival this year, when TV viewers saw an animated Williams after Coole Cody won the Craft Irish Whisky Co. Plate Handicap Chase.
The popular handicap chaser was ridden by stable jockey, Adam Wedge, and continued his success at the iconic venue.
Williams hadn’t had a winner there since 2006 but it is always a place where trainers are judged and he concedes: “Coole Cody has been quite a remarkable horse around Cheltenham. His record in all the major handicaps over two mile four, two mile five, is probably as good as any horse in the history of the sport.
“He’s won all those major two and a half handicaps in Cheltenham, so to go to the Festival and to win that meant an awful lot.
“It meant a lot to his owner and to the yard. They are very difficult races to win. It was great for us, it was a magnificent achievement.
“Any of those big races mean a lot. We have been lucky enough to win a lot of big races and every time you win a big race you realise how lucky you are to be involved as a yard and as a family.
“It‘s funny, really, because racing is every day. Professional sport is difficult and you just have to roll on and look towards the next race. There is not too much time to congratulate yourself.
“You are only as good as your last winner and people soon forget.
“So, I don’t wallow in it for too long.”

NATIVE RIVER
His dam Native Mo was bought by a dairy farmer in Norther Ireland called Fred Mackey in 1997. She had an accident at home and was unable to race so he bred from her.
She was covered by Indian River, (who won a Grade 3 chase at Auteuil for Guillaume Macaire) and they produced a chestnut foal on 4th May 2010.
He was sold in November of that year as a foal by Mackey at the Tattersalls Ireland November Sale, with John Dineen the purchaser at €6,000.
OWNER: BROCADE RACING
He made his point-to-point debut for Denis Ahern at Dromahane in March 2014 and was bought privately by Tom Malone on the back of an eye-catching run when brought down at the final fence whilst staying on strongly under a patient ride
Tom invited Garth and Anne Broome to take a look at him with a view to buying even though they were not too keen beforehand given his chestnut colour However, once they had seen him trot-up and display his catlike action and lovely temperament, let it sink in over a cup of tea they decided to buy him within half an hour. They sent him to be trained by Colin Tizzard and he made his English debut in a bumper at Newton Abbot in October 2014 where he was a one-pace third and a little disappointing however three weeks later he won a maiden hurdle over 2& 3/4 miles at Stratford and followed up in 'The French Furze' at Newcastle Stepped up into Grade 1 company for the first time in the Challow he was last of six but it was a personal best so far. Unfortunately, he then fell at Cheltenham in a Grade 2 hurdle when going well before dropping right back in trip and winning the Listed Novice Hurdle at Exeter over 2 miles. He finished his season by finishing midfield in the Albert Bartlett at the Festival.
He made his chasing debut at the Chepstow opening meeting in October 2015 where he was third before he went to Exeter and won. His next five races that season were in Graded company, a win at Newbury, third in the Kauto Star and Towton before a staying-on strongly second in The National Hunt Chase over 4 miles and then a first Grade 1 win at Aintree where Richard Johnson partnered him for the first time
After a prep-run in the Yorkshire hurdle October 2016 he went straight to Newbury to win the Hennessy and then to Chepstow for The Welsh National winning off top weight. He then took in the Denman at Newbury before finishing 3 lengths third in the 2017 Gold Cup. He was then given a good break until February 2018 and his stall was laid out for the Gold Cup. He prepped by taking The Denman again before attempting to make-all in The Gold Cup to win by 4 lengths. He ran only three times in the 18/19 season placing in the Betfair Chase, The King George and the Gold Cup.
In 19/20 he won The Many Clouds Chase at Aintree and The Denman at Newbury again for the third time (where he remained unbeaten over fences from 5 runs). He missed that year's Gold Cup due to a niggling injury and after a comeback run won The Cotswold Chase at Sandown in February 21 before another fourth place in The Gold Cup and a third in the Grade 1 at Aintree. In December 2021 he had his final run at Chepstow in The Welsh National after which retired after having won 14 of his 32 starts finishing in the first four on 28 occasions and earning over £1.1million in prizemoney.
In all he won 11 times over fences for 4 different jockeys earned a career best official rating of 176.
He now has an active life residing at Tom Malone's farm only a few miles away from his owners Garth and Anne Broome.
He is ridden out most days and is due to start participating in the ROR classes for retired racehorses. He has also chauffeured at his first school prom!

Preference is for TEA CLIPPER, who has made a winning reappearance at this course in both of the last 2 seasons and has likely been aimed at this event. Last year’s runner-up Kitty’s Light looks the chief threat whilst Gats And Co also warrants respect.

Meet Martin Tedham, CEO of the Wasdell Group –Sponsors of the Silver Trophy Handicap Hurdle
Martin Tedham can remember the day he became hooked on horse racing because it was around the time he was trying to wean himself off cigarettes.
Tedham is the chief executive of Wasdell Group, sponsors of the £75,000 Silver Trophy Handicap Hurdle, the feature race on Day Two of the Unibet Jump Season Opener
Martin is a huge racing fan as well as racehorse owner He can tell you exactly when the sport really got its hooks into him because it was 15 years ago when he was trying to give up smoking.
“I have a good friend up in Yorkshire called Steve Ryan who owns a few horses,” says Martin.
“He took me to a few sales and I was just watching the horses in awe, and he said to me, ‘Why don’t you buy one?’ I didn’t know anything about horses!
“This grey horse just came in; it went around and came back to us. I decided, I’ll buy this one. It was a great horse; it was called High Cake.
“I was told later the reason the horse came back to me was, that I had just stopped smoking at the time and I was eating a lot of Polo mints and it could smell the Polos on us.
“Well, I bought that horse and gave it to Richard Fahey to train. His first words to me were, ‘This is the horse with the bad legs! What did your vet say? Has he checked the horse?’
“I had no idea but that horse went to Musselburgh and ran in the first race. It was 33/1 and it romped in! I put £100 on it, so who needs a vet!”
Things have moved on since then and these days Martin’s connection with winners is based on more than a packet of mints.
Since 2019, the Wasdell Group have been the main sponsors of Jonjo O’Neil Racing at Jackdaws Castle in the Cotswolds, where Martin owns a string of horses including Tedham, Wasdell Dundalk and Zabeel Champion. His horse Sky Pirate (photographed) won at the Cheltenham Festival in 2021.
But his sponsorship interests also extend to Chepstow, where he has sponsored the Silver Trophy Handicap Hurdle since 2020. He has just agreed to support the race for another three years.
“The great thing is that Chepstow is very local for me,” says Martin, whose packaging company operate in the pharmaceutical industry.
“I have found there to be a lot of real racing people at the course. I am Scottish, of course, but I have a soft spot for the Welsh and it is always a great time at the races.
“This is the start of the jump season, the weather is changing, the colour of the leaves are changing, and the atmosphere and anticipation is certainly building. The trainers need wet weather for the jumps and hopefully it will arrive in time.
“I am hoping to have a runner that day, but that is up to the trainer! We’ll have to see. It is up to Jonjo and the horses and he will let me know, that’s how it is!”
But the Wasdell Group’s decision to lend their name to the feature race of the Jump Season Opener a huge part of the Big Welsh Racing Weekend is not just about a sentimental attachment to racing.
For Martin, there are hard-headed business reasons to sponsor the race, too.
“We do a lot of veterinary products which are sold all over the world for horses and other animals.
“We also have one factory in Ireland, one in Dundalk, one in Newcastle, Northampton, Burnley and Swindon. If you get blood pressure tablets, Viagra or penicillin, you might be getting it from us, we send all over the world.
“Racing is a nice fit for that and a lot of people who work for me love the horses and gamble on them. So, the big thing for me is the employees in the company love the horses.
“They are always asking for any tickets on a Saturday or on the phone asking if the horses have a chance this week. So, it works really well.”

THE SILVER TROPHY
History of the Wasdell Group Silver Trophy
The Wasdell Group Silver Trophy, a two and a half mile handicap hurdle, was first run in 1989, and though sponsored in recent years by the Wasdell Group for most of its existence it was associated with the Tote.
One of its first winners was the best; in 1990 Bradbury Star was on his way to becoming a top class all-rounder, combining classiness, versatility and resilience. He ran 58 times, winning 18 at all distances from two to three miles. Amazingly, he won eight times at Cheltenham.
Most of Silver Trophy runners go on to thrive at longer distances and the 2007 winner was a prime example; that was Don’t Push It, who three years later gave A P McCoy his only winning ride in the Grand National.
Horses placed in the Silver Trophy have also been worth following in staying chases.
Fourth in 2011 was The Giant Bolster, who would finish second, third and fourth in three Cheltenham Gold Cups. Vieux Lion Rouge, third in 2014, won 13 times in all and became a real Aintree specialist. In fourth that year was Regal Encore, successful six times later including four at Ascot. Court Minstrel was a 40/1 success for South Wales trainer Evan Williams in 2015, and he became the only dual winner of the race when scoring again two years later. The form of the latter race turned out to be excellent. Six of the first eight home won again before long.
Tea Clipper (photographed) took the 2020 Silver Trophy in convincing style, finishing six lengths ahead of the previous year’s winner Flash The Steel. He was placed at both of the next two years’ Cheltenham and Aintree Festivals. In October 2021 returned to Chepstow to take the valuable Robert Mottram Trophy.
The Silver Trophy form of 2021 (won by the Philip Hobbs trained Orbys Legend) continues to hold good; five of the first eight in the latest running won races within three months.

THE PAUL FERGUSONS JUMPERS TO FOLLOW 4-Y-O HANDICAP HURDLE
The second Weatherbys-sponsored race at the two-day fixture is the penultimate race this afternoon and I am delighted that the name of Jumpers To Follow continues in association with the valuable four-year-old handicap hurdle This is the eighth time that Weatherbys have sponsored this race and the sixth successive year that it has been run under the ‘JTF’ banner
10 go to post, with five having run within the past 26 days and the other five making their seasonal reappearance. This is something that must be factored in at this time of year not just in this race and of those who may hold a fitness edge, the hat-trick seeking Bagheera Ginge is sure to help ensure that the race won’t be run at a dawdle He drops back in distance, having made the running on his last two starts.
Winterwatch is a maiden, but travelled well last time and did win on the Flat in late-June, whilst the Irish-raider Sawbuck also caught the eye with how he moved throughout a similar event at Listowel last month. Both cope well with decent ground, whilst the other recent runners are the consistent Krypton Gold and Milton Harris’ Appreciate Trainer Milton Harris saddles two runners in the race
That quintet face a better quality of opponent here, however, and the weights are headed by Nicky Henderson’s Impulsive One Henderson sent out Progressive to win last year’s renewal and the Simon Munir and Isaac Souede-owned gelding was a Listed winner last term and was last seen contesting the Grade 1 Anniversary Hurdle at Aintree
Too Friendly and Saint Segal both contested the Boodles Juvenile Hurdle at Cheltenham (the former also went on to run in Aintree’s Grade 1) and the latter has around 10 lengths to find, on just 1lb better terms. Both are keen-going sorts and Dan Skelton’s runner started last season well, winning at Stratford and Newcastle, whilst Jane Williams’ runner also won twice as a juvenile The son of Saints des Saints hadn’t run on the Flat, so is open to considerable improvement after just one season of racing, and he travelled noticeably well throughout the festival contest. Runner-up in the Grade 1 Finale Hurdle at this track last December, he could well prove his handicap mark (125) to be lenient in time and could develop into a really nice prospect, once learning to settle He has had a wind-operation since last seen and is very much an intriguing contender under Ciaran Gethings.
Silver Shade was another two-time winner last season, although both of those victories were gained on soft ground, so conditions might be a little lively for the grey, who wears a first-time tongue-tie, whilst Mothill completes the field of 10 Runner-up on heavy ground here in late-February, he made all when winning by 9 lengths at Fontwell in mid-May and although he defeated just two rivals, the runner-up (and stable-mate) has since advertised the form by winning twice during the summer

The vote goes to SAINT SEGAL, who was too keen in the Fred Winter on his final start of what was otherwise a highly promising novice campaign last term He has undergone a wind operation ahead of this assignment and appeal as the type to make his mark in high-grade handicaps during the months ahead. Mothill is also armed with potential and he is feared most ahead of Silver Shade andToo Friendly A mention also needs to be made of Bagheera Ginge, who is clearly going the right way.

PAUL FERGUSON’S JUMPERS TO FOLLOW 4-Y-O HURDLE
This race, formerly known as the Free Handicap Hurdle, is for four-year-olds only and dates back to 1969. It was sponsored by Timeform for many years.
Its most illustrious winner was Night Nurse in 1975, one of the all-time greats whose gameness made him one of the most popular horses in a Golden Age for jump racing. His 35 victories included two Champion Hurdles and numerous major steeplechases. He was second in a Cheltenham Gold Cup.
Contrastingly, the 1977 Free Hurdle winner Levaramoss was a good prospect who later turned sour, frequently refusing to start and eventually being banned.
1983’s winner Ra Nova would go on to win Newbury’s Schweppes Gold Trophy (now the Betfair Hurdle), the richest handicap hurdle of the season, four months later.
The photogenic grey Silver Streak, from the Evan Williams stable, won in 2017. It was the Welsh yard’s second success in the race in three years. With hindsight the future Champion Hurdle third and Christmas Hurdle winner was a certainty here, carrying just ten stone four pounds.
Martin Pipe’s stable dominated the Free Hurdle in the 1990s but since then Paul Nicholls has been the man to follow with eight victories since 2002. The most recent, in 2020, was Thyme White (photographed), owned by the late Andy Stewart, of Big Buck’s fame. Last year’s winner was Progressive, trained by Nicky Henderson.
