Welcome to Chepstow Racecourse.
Welcome to Chepstow for our Christmas Party Race Day with the feature event, the Coral Welsh Grand National Trial. The last two winners of the Trial, Secret Reprieve and Iwilldoit, have both gone on to win the Coral Welsh Grand National itself so it’s proving to be a useful stepping stone for the big prize. I’m pleased to see a field of 12 declared with previous winners Secret Reprieve and Elegant Escape both in the line-up. Good luck to the connections of the runners in every race today.
We are expecting an attendance of around 4000 for today’s meeting with hospitality and restaurants sold out. Tickets sales have been strong and well above the average for this fixture in the last 5 years. After racing there is a performance from the Oasis Experience in the Bonanza Boy Marquee.
The team are working hard on preparations for the £150,000 Coral Welsh Grand National meeting on Tuesday 27th December Hospitality is virtually sold out but we do have places still available on our Potters Corner package details are available on the website.
The quality of the entries for the race are excellent with all the major yards represented including challengers from across the Irish Sea. It’s the 50th year of Coral’s support of this prestigious event, one of the longest running sporting sponsorships. We are hugely grateful for their support.
Looking ahead to 2023, we have some exciting events lined-up with concerts from Lionel Richie and George Ezra taking centre stage on June 30th and July 2nd. There is no racing with these events which are taking place in the centre course tickets are available from Ticketmaster We have 29 meetings next year with the opener on Sunday 8th January.
Finally, everyone in the racecourse management team was deeply saddened to hear of the death of Peter Davies, a solicitor and racehorse owner, well known to so many people across Wales. Peter and his wife Janet’s horses are trained by Evan Williams and they have enjoyed lots of success over the years including the victory of Prime Venture in the Veterans’ Chase Final at Sandown in January. He will be greatly missed.

OFFICIAL BHA RATINGS EXPLAINED
The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions
A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances) The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in nonhandicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating For novice steeple chasers, the latest hurdle race rating may be shown until such time as the Handicappers allot a separate steeple chase rating Such ratings are prefixed by the letter h.
