OFFICIAL BHA RATINGS EXPLAINED
The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions
A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances) The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in nonhandicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating For novice steeple chasers, the latest hurdle race rating may be shown until such time as the Handicappers allot a separate steeple chase rating Such ratings are prefixed by the letter h.

A warm welcome to Chepstow for our Six Nations Race Day.
There are eight races today with 97 declared runners – once again the support we have received from owners and trainers has been exceptional. I’d like to wish everyone the best of luck with their runners.
I would like to thank Pertemps for their race sponsorship this afternoon. They have supported this fixture for many years and I hope their guests have an enjoyable day with us.
After racing we will be showing the Wales v England Six Nations game on the big screen in the Bonanza Boy Marquee. The game starts at 4.45pm.
We have a busy programme of race days coming up with the Mothering Sunday meeting on March 19th and Easter Monday Family Day on April 10th. For Dragon Bet Grand National Race Day on Saturday 15th April we will be operating a huge sweepstake for all customers to participate in – details to follow soon.
One new event we have just launched is Abba Race Night on Saturday 10th June. Later this summer we are working in partnership with Live Nation for three great outdoor concerts – Lionel Richie on Friday 30th June, Lewis Capaldi on Saturday 1st July and George Ezra on Sunday 2nd July – tickets are available from Ticketmaster
On a personal note, I have taken a role as Regional Director South West for ARC and will now oversee Chepstow, Hereford, Ffos Las and Worcester As a result, we are recruiting for a new Executive Director/General Manager at Chepstow. Anyone interested in applying can email me at (pbell@arenaracingcompany.co.uk).
There’s racing at Hereford tomorrow with seven races from 1.50pm. Have a great day at Chepstow today and I look forward to welcoming you back for another event.
Phil Bell Regional Director South West
