OFFICIAL BHA RATINGS EXPLAINED
The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions
A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances). The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in nonhandicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating. For novice steeple chasers, the latest hurdle race rating may be shown until such time as the Handicappers allot a separate steeple chase rating Such ratings are prefixed by the letter h.

Welcome to Chepstow for the first of our four fixtures in June
The meeting has been sponsored by The Trade Centre who have seven giant car stores across the UK including the original site in Neath. It is the first time they have supported an entire afternoon of racing and we would like to thank them for their support.
As well as members of the management team joining us today, a number of staff who are celebrating ten years with the company are coming along too. I hope they have a lovely afternoon with us.
We have 12 flat fixtures between today and September 4th. Jump racing then resumes with our Unibet Jump Season Opener on Friday 13th and Saturday 14th October.
Among the summer highlights is our first Racing League fixture on Thursday 10th August. June is a busy month with other fixtures on 10th, 16th and 26th. On Saturday 10th June, it’s Abba Race Night. The Abba tribute act Waterloo will be performing for 90 minutes live after racing.
On Ladies Evening on Friday 14th July the post racing entertainment is supplied by The Dreamboys. The ever popular Caribbean Race Night is on Friday 28th July. For both of these fixtures, we are offering significant discounts for group bookings, please see the website for details.
Congratulations to Pembrokeshire born jockey Sean Bowen who last Saturday broke Sir AP McCoy’s record of 69 winners at our sister course Ffos Las. Sean surpassed the total riding a double that included Whatawit trained by Sir Mark Prescott who – in a two runner race – was sent off at odds of 1-100, the joint shortest priced winner in Britain and Ireland.
Good luck to all connections here this afternoon with a special reference to Ocean’s Five, the owners of Rhubarb, a four time course winner who runs in the 2.25pm and Paul & Ann de Weck who own Connie’s Rose who runs in the 3pm – she’s been successful three times over the course.
I hope you have an enjoyable afternoon with us and I look forward to welcoming you back on another occasion. If you are interested in taking hospitality at any of our fixtures, please email Jodi Boreham (jboreham@chepstow-racecourse.co.uk).

WELCOME
The Trade Centre and Chepstow Racecourse
Join Forces
The Trade Centre break new ground today at Chepstow when the major UK car dealership sponsors an entire meeting at the racecourse for the first time.
The move reflects a growing confidence in both the sport and the venue, which will host four flat race meetings this month.
The Trade Centre – who were founded in Wales in 1999 – have previously sponsored individual races, but have now broadened that commitment to a whole meeting
The company – who own seven giant stores around the UK, including their original site at Neath – began to develop a link with Welsh racing when they chose Chepstow as the location to celebrate the achievements of staff who had been with them for a significant number of years.
The Ten Year Club
The Ten Year Club is an exclusive group of employees who have reached a decade of service with The Trade Centre.
Adam Sherief, The Trade Centre Group’s head of people, says: “We currently have 31 people who are in the Ten Year Club, which is a fantastic achievement.
“We dipped our toe in at Chepstow last year and held our Ten Year Club annual event at the racecourse which was a fantastic success.
“We have since sponsored a couple of races, and taken some hoarding advertising, and now we are sponsoring an entire day, so it has been a natural evolution for us.
“There are lots of things that make this very worthwhile from our perspective.
“The kind of people who go racing are often our kind of customers, it provides good value from an exposure perspective, with the likes of Sky Sports there, and it’s just a very pleasant way to reward our own people within a beautiful setting here in Wales
“As a Welsh company, everything here makes sense for us.”
Six members of staff will also be recognised for their loyalty and join the Ten Year Club on the day. That will take the total up to 37 out of a total workforce of almost 600.
The Kit Club
Racing is not the only sport which benefits from the backing of The Trade Centre, a Welsh-owned company built on strong Welsh connections The company also have sponsorships links with Swansea City and have their own Kit Club – a sponsorship initiative that provides playing kits for various Under 17s sports teams across the UK Football, rugby, hockey, netball and basketball clubs have all benefitted from the Kit Club
Last year, over 400 clubs wore team kit provided by The Trade Centre.
“We are proud of our Welsh roots and proud to back Welsh sport,” says Adam.
THANK YOU TO OUR SPONSORS
an enjoyable and prosperous day’s racing.

DOG FOX has returned a much improved model and is impossible to side against turned out under a 6lb penalty for his easy Haydock success Star of Sussex appeals as a likely improver now going into handicaps so could emerge as the chief threat to Ed Dunlop’s hat-trick seeker.
