OFFICIAL BHA RATINGS EXPLAINED

The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions

A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances). The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in nonhandicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating. For novice steeple chasers, the latest hurdle race rating may be shown until such time as the Handicappers allot a separate steeple chase rating Such ratings are prefixed by the letter h.

HOW TO READ

Welcome to Chepstow Racecourse for a summer evening of flat racing. It is the first of four fixtures this month.

We are raising funds for Llamau tonight, the Wales-based charity that works throughout the country to try and prevent homelessness and provide safe accommodation for those who find themselves without it. They support housing projects, domestic abuse refuges, mental health back-up and also provide education and training for young people.

There is a fund raising dinner in The View Restaurant backed by Blake Morgan the leading UK law firm. A big thank you to all the companies who have taken tables and sponsored races in aid of this very worthy cause. Also, a special mention for Lucy Walker from Blake Morgan who has organised the event.

Our recent Live Nation weekend went very well with the track seeing over 35,000 people visiting for the headline concerts featuring Lionel Richie and George Ezra. This has been a fantastic partnership between Live Nation, Cuffe Taylor and ourselves which we hope will continue in the future with more popular acts coming to Monmouthshire.

My first three weeks as General Manager have been extremely enjoyable and I have been made to feel very welcome by the team here at Chepstow and the Arena Racing Company. I am looking forward to welcoming more customers to the venue this year and into 2024.

We have a busy time ahead of us this month. On Ladies Evening this Friday 14th July the post racing entertainment is supplied by The Dreamboys. The ever popular Caribbean Race Night is on Friday 28th July. For both of these fixtures, we are offering significant discounts for group bookings, please see the website for details.

We also host our first Racing League fixture on Thursday 10th August.

Thank you all for coming today and I hope you have a great evening with us and I look forward to welcoming you back on another occasion. If you are interested in taking hospitality at any of our fixtures, please email Jodi Boreham (jboreham@chepstow-racecourse.co.uk).

CHEPSTOW RACECOURSE is part of Arena Racing Company which includes; Bath, Brighton, Doncaster, Ffos Las, Fontwell Park, Great Yarmouth, Hereford, Lingfield Park, Newcastle, Royal Windsor, Sedgefield, Southwell, Uttoxeter, Wolverhampton and Worcester racecourses

LEADING COURSE TRAINER (17-22): T Carroll (19 wins from 170 runners, 11%) runs NEPTUNE LEGEND

TRAINER-IN-FORM (LAST 14 DAYS): R Hannon (11 wins from 61 runners, 18%) runs DILLYDINGDILLYDONG

WEIGHTWATCHER: NEPTUNE LEGEND won off a handicap mark of 78, his rating is now down 21lb to 57.

LONGEST TRAVELLER: MALHAM TARN COVE trained by S Hollinshead, Rugeley, 96 miles.

THE COLA KID had something to spare when landing an 8-runner event at Ffos Las a week ago and is the obvious choice. Fellow last-time-out winner Kyber Crystal looks the main danger, although Hagia Sophia is expected to put up another solid showing.
