OFFICIAL BHA RATINGS EXPLAINED

The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions

A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances). The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in nonhandicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating. For novice steeple chasers, the latest hurdle race rating may be shown until such time as the Handicappers allot a separate steeple chase rating Such ratings are prefixed by the letter h.

Welcome to Chepstow Racecourse for a Summer Afternoon of Racing

I would like to thank today’s race sponsors Vickers Bet and Blackmore Building Contractors. We also have a large hospitality booking in The View from the Events Room

I hope they and their guests have a great afternoon with us.

My first month as General Manager has gone very well. We are planning and organising the rest of 2023, which is looking like a busy time ahead.

At the end of this month, we hold the ever popular Caribbean Race Night on Friday 28th July. For this fixture, we are offering significant discounts for group bookings, please see the website for details.

We also host our first Racing League fixture on Thursday 10th August and our Superhero Family day on the 28th August.

The Unibet Jump Season Opener will take place on the 13th and 14th October, please see the website for more information and purchase your tickets in advance. We now offer a combined ticket (at a discounted rate) so you can all benefit from the two day event.

The following month, we are running the Chepstow Military Raceday on the Wednesday 8th November and there is free admission for past and present military personnel.

December 27th – is all about the Coral Welsh Grand National again we are recommending buying your tickets early to avoid disappointment.

Thank you all for coming today and I hope you have a great day with us and I look forward to welcoming you back on another occasion. If you are interested in taking hospitality at any of our fixtures, please email Jodi Boreham (jboreham@chepstow-racecourse.co.uk).
