WELCOME
Welcome to Chepstow Racecourse for Day One of the Unibet Jump Season Opener. This meeting is now firmly established as the start of the winter jump season and there is £400,000 of prize money on offer over the next two days. I am delighted with the quality of the entries and it is also great to see a number of runners from across the Irish Sea. Today’s feature race is the £50,000 Unibet Persian War Novices’ Hurdle – many previous winners have become real stars of the sport so let’s hope we see another potential champion this afternoon. Also, this afternoon we host the Unibet Welsh Jump Jockeys Derby charity race. There are ten Welsh jump jockeys racing over the Derby distance of 1m 4f to raise money for LATCH, the Welsh Children’s Cancer Charity who have supported Christian Williams and his family after his daughter, Betsy was diagnosed with leukaemia. The race has created an enormous amount of publicity in recent weeks. The promotional video has been a massive hit across social media. Big thanks to all the jockeys for taking part especially Alan Johns who wrote the script and acted as producer! We are currently approaching a figure of £8000 raised for the charity which is fantastic. I would like to take this opportunity and to thank today’s sponsors Unibet, Chepstow Plant International, Tom Malone Bloodstock, Chepstow Construction Equipment, Professor Caroline Tisdall and Venatour Racing Holidays. Thank you all for coming today and I hope you have a great afternoon with us and I look forward to welcoming you back on another occasion. If you are interested in taking hospitality at any of our fixtures, please email Jodi Boreham (jboreham@chepstow-racecourse.co.uk). Would you like to arrange/discuss an event in 2024? We cater for all so please email Jo (jdrinkwater@arenaracingcompany.co.uk) Would like information on how you become a race sponsor please email lknox@chepstow-racecourse.co.uk

Star Ratings Explained
Each horse has been given a star rating, these are defined below:
HHIII Unlikely to win but not totally without hope. HHHHH Selected to win the race. HIIII Can be given little or no chance. HHHHI Good chance of being placed. HHHII By no means out of the reckoning but at least one or two hold stronger claims
OFFICIAL BHA RATINGS EXPLAINED The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances). The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in nonhandicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating. For novice steeple chasers, the latest hurdle race rating may be shown until such time as the Handicappers allot a separate steeple chase rating. Such ratings are prefixed by the letter h.

LONGEST TRAVELLER: LANDOFSMILES trained by P Bowen, Haverfordwest, 123 miles. RACE SUMMARY
The highly admirable AYE RIGHT went winless in just a handful of starts last term, albeit not disgraced in face of a stiff task when fourth in the Grade 1 Ascot Chase on his final start. Given a chance by the assessor on return, he could be worth chancing to come out on top back in calmer waters. Nigel Twiston-Davies has his string in fine fettle and his Good Boy Bobby is a big threat on his seasonal bow. Landofsmiles and Cyclop complete the shortlist.

PAUL NICHOLLS Paul Nicholls has been one of the country’s top National Hunt trainers for almost 25 years. He has saddled over 3,600 winners and won the trainers’ championship 14 times. It’s often forgotten that he started out as a jockey and rode more than a hundred winners in the 1980s. One of his biggest was on the David Baronstrained Playschool in the 1987 Coral Welsh Grand National at Chepstow. A broken leg curtailed Nicholls’ riding career, but training had always been the long-term aim and he worked as an assistant to Barons for two years, during which time the stable won the Aintree Grand National with Seagram. In October 1991 Nicholls began training on his own account at Ditcheat in Somerset with just eight horses. He rose steadily through the ranks and his arrival in the major league came with three successes at the 1999 Cheltenham Festival, including the Gold Cup with See More Business. Since then the winners have never stopped flowing. He’s won four Cheltenham Gold Cups, a Grand National and 13 King George VI Chases at Kempton. Four of his greatest horses were: Kauto Star, the best chaser since Desert Orchid and won two Gold Cups and five King George VIs at Kempton. Denman, who won a Gold Cup beating Kauto Star, and was second in three others. Big Buck’s, who won 18 consecutive races and was the Stayers’ Hurdle champion four times in a row. Master Minded, an exceptional two-mile chaser who won 13 of his 19 races for the yard, including two Queen Mother Champion Chases. Nicholls has been responsible for 262 winners at Chepstow, more than anyone else. He makes a point of targeting the Unibet Jump Season Opener each year as a launch pad for his younger horses to get their campaigns under way. In 2020 he trained eight winners at the two-day meeting. How many will there be this year?
PERSIAN WAR THE UNIBET PERSIAN WAR NOVICES’ HURDLE (GRADE 2) The Unibet Persian War Novices’ Hurdle is named after an outstanding horse who won three consecutive Champion Hurdles in 1968-70. He only just missed out on a fourth by being in less than tip-top condition when lining up for the 1971 race and coming up against another exceptional horse, Bula. For his first two championships Persian War was trained close to Chepstow racecourse by ex-jockey Colin Davies, but his owner was hard to please and the horse was moved to another stable. The race named after him was first run at Chepstow in 2000 and, being confined to novices and run over two and a half miles, it has proved to be a stepping stone for several future staying hurdlers and chasers. Silviniaco Conti won the race in 2010 and went on to be a consistent top class chaser and, though he never excelled at Cheltenham, his 16 victories elsewhere earned over £1m. They included seven Grade 1s, notably the King George VI Chase on at Kempton in 2013 and 2014. One of the best Persian War Hurdles for producing future stars was that of 2014. The winner, Blaklion, would later win the RSA at Cheltenham, Aintree’s Becher Chase and finish fourth in the Grand National when favourite. The runner-up, Vicente, wasn’t at his best on the soft going at Chepstow and showed his true colours later by winning two Scottish Nationals. Thyme Hill was a classy winner in 2019 for Philip Hobbs. He became one of the top British staying hurdlers, winning Aintree’s Grade 1 Ryanair Hurdle the following year. The 2020 running went to Paul Nicholls for the fifth time in eleven years, with McFabulous, who has since taken his career record to 10 wins from 23 starts. The Hobbs-trained winner in 2021, Camprond went on to take a 24runner contest at the Punchestown Festival with ease. The 2022 winner was Accidental Rebel (seen above), who won four of his six races last season

PANJARI is an exciting recruit to this sphere having shown useful form on the Flat in Germany, so he gets the nod to get his hurdling career off to the perfect start. Donnacha offered plenty to work on both starts over hurdles last season and has the potential to do better still if cutting out the errors, while newcomer Zonda makes appeal on paper for last year’s winning yard. 1-2-3: 1.PANJARI (IRE) 2.DONNACHA (IRE) 3.ZONDA (FR) KEY

Photo to left: Professor Caroline Tisdall with Un Temps Pour Tout on the day he retired. Photo below: Un Temps Pour Tout wins the Ultima Handicap Chase at Cheltenham Festival on 17th March 2017
Professor Caroline Tisdall I’m sponsoring the Seniors’ race at Chepstow today because I love these wonderful old equine heroes! I’m lucky enough to still have my most famous veteran, Vieux Lion Rouge now aged 14. He jumped more Aintree fences than any other horse in history 254! And apart from winning the Beecher’s Chase in 2016 and 2020, along with many other races he also won the first veterans’ chase I sponsored here at Chepstow! It was buying Vieux Lion Rouge at the sales in France for £35,000 that really got me going as an owner in 2012. Before that I had done my ‘apprenticeship’ as the Pipes put it in syndicates and shared. But my love of racing dates back to primary school when I would bunk off to slip on to the Sandown races! I was able to live the dream 50 years later, after many years writing for The Guardian, publishing 14 books, mainly on art, and writing and directing films, followed by a decade helping to establish African Parks a charity for nature conservation which now works in 10 countries. Then at last I inherited enough to really join in our great sport. And what a journey it has been. I’ve had splendid horses like Dell’Arca who won the Greatwood on his first appearance at Cheltenham, and Un Temps pour Tout, who I shared with Bryan Drew and who won the French Champion Hurdle and two Ultima Chases at the Cheltenham Festival. They were both very expensive horses, but there’s so much luck involved. Price will not save you from tragedies or guarantee success. What I have learned is that it’s not just about winning, although the Grand National is still my target! It’s about these wonderful creatures, these beautiful athletes and their amazing temperaments. It’s about the magic of the racing community and all the dedicated people who work with our horses. And today, at Chepstow, it’s about the valiant veterans! Prof Caroline Tisdall. FAUSTINOVICK showed his ability to go well fresh when scoring over C&D under Harry Kimber on last season’s reappearance and might be able to repeat the feat back from wind surgery having dropped back to that winning mark. Puddlesinthepark was a promising second on his Worcester chase debut in May and is second choice ahead of Chris Gordon’s Blade Runner.
