WELCOME
Welcome to Chepstow Racecourse for our Christmas Party Race Day, with the feature event, the Coral Welsh National Trial. This day is becoming a real stepping stone for runners going onto the Coral Welsh Grand National. We are looking forward to a wonderful afternoon of racing. We have 8 action-packed races for you all to enjoy. After racing today, we have the fabulous Dean Jones, a tribute act to Tom Jones, performing in the Bonanza Boy Marquee. I would like to thank today’s race sponsors Coral and welcome all their guests. For the rest of December, there is still time to book a table at our Christmas Party Night on December 15th. Bingo Lingo is returning on the 16th and The Coral Welsh Grand National take place on the 27th. Hospitality for the Coral Welsh Grand National is almost sold out but we do have some spaces in the Trackside Marquue. Planning for 2024 is already taking place including two new race days! On April 1st we are holding our first food and drink festival race day – A taste of Wales. Meanwhile,on June 8th we will be hosting our One Night in Nashville race day so bring your cowboy boots and hats, learn to line dance and ride the rodeo bull as well as enjoying a great day of racing. Live Nation are returning with headliners Hozier and Sir Tom Jones and tickets will be available via Ticketmaster. Do you follow us on social media? To keep up to date with everything at Chepstow Racecourse please find us on Facebook, Instagram, Twitter and Linkedin. Thank you all for coming today and I hope you have a great afternoon with us and I look forward to welcoming you back on another occasion. If you are interested in taking hospitality at any of our fixtures, please email Jodi Boreham (jboreham@chepstow-racecourse.co.uk). Would you like to arrange/discuss a non-racing event in 2024? SHOWCASE AWARDS 2023 Chepstow has won a prestigious industry award for the Unibet Welsh Jump Jockeys Derby initiative which took place earlier this year. Success came in the ‘Racing Connection’ category at the Racecourse Association’s annual Showcase Awards. The initiative won “thanks to its twofold success of raising vital funds and awareness for children’s cancer charity Latch, itself integral to the ongoing support of trainer Christian Williams’ daughter Betsy who was diagnosed with leukemia in March and showcasing Welsh jockeys to the wider British public.” The “cheeky promotional videos” produced by Welsh jockey Alan Johns were commended and the “initiative was a showcase of the racing community at its best and a celebration of Welsh sport.” £15,000 was raised for Cardiff based Latch, three times the targeted amount with a further £10,000 added to the pot when the breeches worn by Nico de Boinville on Constitution Hill in this year’s Champion Hurdle were auctioned the ROA Welsh Horse Racing Awards. The race, which took place at Chepstow's Unibet Jump Season Opener in October, was won by Connor Brace. Thank you to everyone who made this idea come to fruition - the fabulous Welsh jump jockeys, the BHA for granting permission, Chepstow clerk of the course Libby O'Flaherty, our racing executive Rebecca Smith, Chepstow marketing man Alex Bray, Equine Productions for producing the video free of charge, the trainers/owners who supplied horses for the race, Ed Nicholson, Cornelius Lysaght for the voice over and Alan Johns for creative genius. And a big thanks to everyone who donated.

Quite an interesting race. BLACK KALANISI may be rising 11 but he’s been better than ever on the Flat lately and might be worth siding with off what is a good mark based on the pick of his form over jumps. The prolific The Imposter may give him the most to do.

HIGH GAME ROYAL made a highly encouraging start over fences when chasing home a progressive type at Warwick, in turn pulling well clear of the third who was successful next time. He is open to improvement in this sphere and is taken to go one better. Ballycamus is every inch a chaser on looks and will be a threat if he takes to this game at the first attempt, while Eaton Collina may well leave his reappearance run behind and, if that proves to be the case, he could also have a say.

Iwilldoit Secret Reprieve - far right Secret Reprieve
Welsh Grand National Trial Today’s Coral Welsh Grand National Trial has been a great guide to the Welsh National itself, run on the 27th of this month. The winners in 2020 and 2021, Secret Reprieve and Iwilldoit, went on to win the Welsh National itself. Both were trained in Wales, by Evan Williams and Sam Thomas. Secret Reprieve was also second in the 2022 Trial. The winner, Venetia Williams’ Farinet, is entered in this year’s Welsh National. The Welsh National is run over the marathon distance of three and three quarter miles and 130 yards, but the Trial is seven furlongs shorter, which gives runners a chance to recover before tackling the big race later in the month. The Trial used to be called the Rehearsal Chase, until in 2005 the race of that name was transferred to Newcastle to be run on the same day as the Fighting Fifth Hurdle. Chepstow continued to have a three mile chase at this fixture and in 2014 renamed it the Welsh National Trial. Fittingly, it was the veteran Welsh trainer Dai Burchell who won it with his eleven-year-old Rebeccas Choice. There are three Welsh-trained Trial runners this year; Pats Fancy and Wayfinder (Rebecca Curtis) and Dalamoi (Tim Vaughan). So far James Bowen is the only Welsh jockey to win the Trial; he was aboard Secret Reprieve in 2020. Could that change this year? Today Adam Wedge, Ben Jones, Alan Johns and Richard Patrick all have rides. The Trial runners who are also entered in the Welsh Grand National are Nassalam, Pats Fancy, Major Dundee, Wayfinder and Not Sure.

The stable runs BALLYDISCO and IBERIO today. LONGEST TRAVELLERS: IBERIO & BALLYDISCO trained by P Hobbs & J White, both Minehead, 76 miles. RACE SUMMARY
There was plenty to like about TAKE YOUR TIME’s performance when making a winning start over fences at Newton Abbot and a 3lb rise is negligible given that he was a hurdles winner here off a 9lb higher mark than this in 2021. The 8-y-o shades preference ahead of Hurlerontheditch, who had the race in safe-keeping when coming down at the final fence at Warwick. Pimlico Point also made a promising start to his chase career and merits respect, while Hurricane Highway is worth a second look, too.
