Chepstow Racecard - Friday 26th July

Page 1

Welcome to Chepstow Racecourse for Caribbean Racenight!

We’re bringing to Caribbean to Wales for one night as we bring even more colour to the racecourse! It’s set to be a fantastic evening of racing, with a 7 race card starting at 17:40.

Once the action is over on the track, we’ll be welcoming The Trenchtown Experience back to Chepstow for a performance of the best Reggae hits!

A big thank you to our sponsors for the whole card, Bet365. We hope they have an enjoyable evening with us.

We are looking forward to some incredible fixtures during the second half of 2024, with the Racing League returning to Chepstow on Thursday 8th August and our Bank Holiday Family Fun Day on Monday 26th August. Then as things turn a little more autumnal, we get ready for the Unibet Jump Season Opener on Friday 12th and Saturday 13th October, where this year we have a Oktoberfest theme! Before you know it, it’ll be the Coral Welsh Grand National on Friday 27th December!

Thank you for visiting us here tonight, we hope you have a brilliant evening and will visit Chepstow Racecourse again soon!

“To accomplish great things, we must not only act but also dream; not only plan but also believe.”

This was Racing Manager, Howard Davies’ motto during the Dream Alliance years when he managed a syndicate of 23 people who each contributed £10 a week on an allotment in Cefn Fforest, Blackwood.

Dream Alliance went on to win the Coral Welsh National in 2009 at Chepstow Racecourse.

The story became the subject of an award-winning documentary, Dark Horse and a Hollywood movie, Dream Horse based on Howard’s book, Dream Alliance Miracle Racehorse.

Today, Howard is 70 years old and where better to spend his milestone birthday than at his favourite Racecourse.

Happy 70th birthday Howard, a wonderful husband, father and grandfather… and always the great believer!

PAUL AND ANNE DE WECK

Paul and Ann de Weck are great supporters of racing at Chepstow and recently recorded their 100th runner on the flat here. Ten of them have been winners, so it has been a lucky track for them.

The de Wecks have had 42 winners in all, the first of them in 1988 trained by Reg Akehurst at Epsom. However, their first Chepstow success was not until Yorkies Boy in 2004. He’d been a Group race winner in his prime. Now, six years later, age was catching up with him but he was still fast enough and enthusiastic enough to win a 20-runner handicap.

The de Wecks’ racing interests really took off when they started having horses with Ron and then Grace Harris, both of whom have yards not far from Chepstow racecourse. The number of times their horses ran here grew accordingly. April Ciel became a Chepstow specialist, winning three times and finishing second three times when trained by Ron between 2012-14.

Grace trained Tally’s Son to win here in May 2018 at odds of 66/1, but he proved hard to win with again until sent hurdling at the age of nine, when he sprang a 33/1 surprise winning at Stratford.

Their most recent, and most prolific Chepstow winner is the front-running mare Connie’s Rose, trained by Grace Harris. Of her eight wins to date, five were here, including two this season. In addition, she’s been second here four times and third six times, so she’s only been out of the frame here at Chepstow three times out of eighteen runs. Connie’s Rose’s very first outing for the de Wecks in March 2022 gave them a sign of things to come when she was third at 100/1 at Kempton. She has now won £60,000 for them, which is not bad for a 4,000 guineas purchase.

Connie Rose

The de Wecks also own Sisters In The Sky, a winner twice this season and four times in all, but none of them were at Chepstow It seems that, unlike Connie’s Rose, he doesn’t like the place.
