Welcome to Chepstow Racecourse’s Christmas Party Raceday!
I’m delighted to welcome you to Chepstow Racecourse today for our annual Christmas Party raceday, a festive regular in the racing calendar here at Chepstow. We have a thrilling 7 race card on offer for you today, with the highlight being the Coral Welsh Grand National Trial, a key trial race for the big race itself in just 20 days time. The winner of the Coral Welsh Grand National in 3 of the last 4 years has come from this trial, with last year’s winner Nassalam the latest to go on from the trial to triumph in the main event on December 27th.
Thanks must go to Coral for their continued and unwavering support for not just this raceday, but the Coral Welsh Grand National meeting itself.
There will be plenty on offer for you to enjoy today on and off the track, with plenty of different food and beverage outlets open for you to enjoy, as well as live entertainment after racing courtesy of the brilliant Bon Giovi tribute band.
All eyes after racing on Saturday will be cast towards the Coral Welsh Grand National Meeting itself on Friday 27th December. It’s not too late to grab your tickets, with some great value packages available for admission tickets, as well as some hospitality options still available including limited availability in our Trackside Restaurant, featuring some of the best views on the racecourse. Enjoy fine dining at it’s best in our panoramic restaurant, a welcome drink on arrival, plenty of fun hosted by one of our regular raceday tipsters and access to all the action on and off the track.
Thank you once more for joining today. I wish you a wonderful day ahead and the best of luck finding a few winners along the way. I look forward to welcoming you back to us for the Coral Welsh Grand National in 20 days time, or to a future fixture in 2025, with plenty of exciting fixtures lined up for the new calendar year.

Parade Ring
This is an ideal opportunity for racegoers to see the horses close up and assess their attitude and fitness. The horses begin to parade 15-20 minutes before their race, and this is a great chance to pick your horse.
Placing a Bet
The Racecourse Betting shop is situated in the Grandstand & Paddock enclosure. The bookmakers are located in the betting ring in front of the main Grandstand.
The Weighing Room
This is located opposite the Winning Post and all jockeys weigh out here before each race. Their weight, including their saddle, should correspond with the weight shown in today’s racecard for their particular horse in that particular race. Once the race is finished, the jockeys will weigh in and their weight must be the same as when they started. On racedays, four stewards ensure each race is run according to Jockey Club rules and regulations.
Winners Enclosure
Unauthorised Bookmaking
It is a condition of entry to this Racecourse that only individuals in possession of a valid betting badge and occupying an authorised pitch are entitled to lay bets on the course of their business. Any individual found contravening these conditions will be evicted.
Emergency Evacuation Procedure
“Due to circumstances beyond our control racing has had to be suspended, will you please evacuate the buildings by the emergency exits. You will be guided by members of the racecourse staff to specific assembly points, determined by which area you are in. Once there, please wait until the emergency services and/or racecourse staff tell you what to do”.
Please see the assembly points clearly marked on the map.
After each race, the first four placed horses are led into the Winners Enclosure where they are unsaddled and the jockeys take the saddle and weigh in. There are presentations by race sponsors to the connections of the winning on the winner’s podium.

Star Ratings Explained
Each horse has been given a star rating, these are defined below:
HHHHH Selected to win the race
HHHHI Good chance of being placed.
HHHII By no means out of the reckoning but at least one or two hold stronger claims
HHIII Unlikely to win but not totally without hope HIIII Can be given little or no chance.
OFFICIAL BHA RATINGS EXPLAINED
The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions.
A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances). The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in nonhandicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating For novice steeple chasers, the latest hurdle race rating may be shown until such time as the Handicappers allot a separate steeple chase rating Such ratings are prefixed by the letter h.

Nassalam won the trial last year before triumphing in the Welsh Grand National
Welsh Grand National Trial
In the last few years, today’s Welsh National Trial has been a great pointer to the winner of the Welsh Grand National itself later in the month. Three of the last four winners of the Trial have gone on to complete the double, and there has been plenty of cause for Welsh celebration in that period.
The Trial is run over a little less than three miles, seven furlongs shorter than the Welsh National. It can show whether a horse is suited to the Chepstow track, possesses a good deal of stamina, and can perform on the customary soft going. The shorter distance and the three-week interval before the big race gives runners a chance to recover.
In 2020, the Trial and National double was achieved by the Welsh trainer-jockey combination of Evan Williams and James Bowen with the six-year-old Secret Reprieve, who was winning his first steeplechase when taking the Trial by twelve lengths. He’d been 50/1 when he won a Chepstow hurdle two years earlier. After his Trial success he was sent off the 5/2 favourite for the National, which he won comfortably.
Runner-up in both races was the trusty yardstick The Two Amigos, who went on to win the Welsh National in 2022. Wales can take credit here, for his rider was David Prichard, who was brought up in Pontypridd. It’s hoped he will be back to contest this year’s National on the 27th.
In 2021 Iwilldoit won the Trial by 24 lengths for Welsh owners Diamond Racing and trainer Sam Thomas, despite it being only his third outing over fences. He got into the Welsh National with bottom weight and won it decisively. He was third in the 2023 National and is entered in it again this year.
The Trial winner in 2023, Nassalam, put in a fine display of jumping to score for the first time over three miles. Trainer Gary Moore was quietly confident he would stay the extra distance of the Welsh National and he did so with a tremendous performance, demolishing the field to win by 34 lengths. Nassalam’s connections are hopeful of a good run in this year’s National provided the ground is soft or heavy.
