Welcome to Chepstow Racecourse for our eagerly anticipated Coral Welsh Grand National raceday, our feature racing event in the calendar.
I would like to welcome you all to the 52nd year of our sponsorship of the Coral Welsh Grand National
Luke Admans General Manager
We’re thrilled to welcome you to what promises to be a thrilling day celebrating Wales’ premium raceday, with 7 exhilarating races on show, including the Coral Welsh Grand National at 2:50
As our feature race of the day, and with over £85,000 going to the winner, the Coral Welsh Grand National has attracted a hugely talented field, including previous winners Iwilldoit and The Two Amigos. We’re delighted with the runners taking to post, and wish all the runners and riders the best of luck.
A huge thanks must go to Coral, who have offered unwavering support of this fixture It’s a partnership we’re very grateful for and are looking forward to continuing to work alongside Coral to further grow our feature event of the year
We have loads on offer for you today, alongside the superb racing action we’ll have on the track. We have a variety of music on offer throughout, with daytime performances from the Chepstow Male Choir and the Jelly Roll Jazz Band, and after-racing entertainment from the London Street Band in the Bonanza Boy marquee We are delighted to have the superbly talented Sophie Evans with us to welcome in the 2024 running of the Coral Welsh Grand National
Planning is underway for 2025, with some exciting new themes coming to racedays in the new year Our first feature day of 2025 comes on Saturday 22nd February, with our great value Beer & Cider Festival Raceday, with tickets available from just £10 Throughout the spring and summer we’ll have plenty of great social racedays, with a Rum and Reggae tweak to our very well established Caribbean night one of the highlights of our summer Flat racing calendar
We have plenty of wonderful opportunities to get involved with us here at Chepstow Racecourse, whether it be hospitality or general admission on a raceday, a non-raceday event or a commercial partnership/ sponsorship package. We’d love to hear from if you have any queries we can assist with.
Finally, we thank you very much for attending today. We hope you have a wonderful day with us.
From all of us here at Chepstow Racecourse, we wish you a very happy New Year and look forward to welcoming you back to the racecourse in 2025

Simon Clare Ladbrokes Coral PR Director
I am very proud that Coral’s association with this historic horse race and Chepstow Racecourse is entering a sixth decade, making it one of the longest running sporting sponsorships in the World
Whilst so many things in British racing have changed over the years, Coral’s sponsorship of the Welsh Grand National has been ever-present and long may it continue
This sponsorship more than any other reflects Coral’s long-standing commitment to horse racing in general, a commitment which has stepped up a gear over the last two years with the launch of the Coral Racing Club.
The Coral Racing Club is free-to-join for Coral customers and gives members the experience of racehorse ownership of ten racehorses, including the opportunity to be an owner for the day when the horses run and keep a share of any prize money won.
Last month we celebrated the second anniversary of the launch of the Coral Racing Club, and we now have 240,000 members signed up, so if you haven’t yet joined the Club then please do. In addition to following the fortunes of the Club’s racehorses, our members have the chance to win thousands of tickets and hospitality packages to race meetings throughout the year
Have a great day and a Happy New Year

TODAY’S TIPS
RACE ONE WIN: SHADE OF WINTER DANGER: JULIUS DES PICTONS
Julius Des Pictons justified his short odds to score at the second time of asking for Jamie Snowden at Plumpton and he should mount another bold bid, despite his 6lb penalty. However, the vote goes to SHADE OF WINTER, who made the frame on his first start in this sphere over C&D and is likely to have plenty more to offer. With normal improvement, he can get off the mark. Clap Of Thunder is the pick of the remainder
RACE TWO WIN: PASSING KATE DANGER: KING WILLIAM RUFUS
PASSING KATE returned to winning ways in smart style at Leicester on her comeback and she is only 8lb higher for that triumph. Matt Sheppard’s seven-year-old is fancied to complete a double, with her main threat possibly recent Ascot scorer King William Rufus, who carries a 7lb penalty but it would be no surprise to see him get into contention. Gold For Alec is the best of the rest.
RACE THREE WIN: LOWRY’S BAR DANGER: GEORGES SAINT
Venetia Williams has a fine record in this race so Georges Saint has to be considered on his return to the fray LOWRY’S BAR has the more scope for improvement, though, and confirmed the promise of his chasing debut second when going one better in determined fashion at Exeter He excels when the ground is testing so conditions could be perfect for him. Le Milos has been in the handicapper’s grip since lifting the 2022 Coral Gold Cup, but his latest Newbury fourth was a bit better
RACE FOUR WIN: OPEC
DANGER:
NIETZCHE HAS
Nietzsche Has found only one too strong in a Grade 1 at Auteuil last month and the French raider looks likely to launch a serious challenge, but is taken on with OPEC. James Owen’s progressive filly won a Listed race in fine style at Newbury and is a full-sister to the smart Allmankind, who won this contest in 2019. Static went agonisingly close in Listed company at Wetherby before chasing home Triumph Hurdle fancy East India Dock at Cheltenham, while Hot Fuss is not totally discounted either
RACE FIVE WIN: PHANTOMOFTHEPOINTS DANGER: WOODIE FLASH
A winner at Ffos Las in November, Woodie Flash ran well again when second in a competitive handicap at Newbury but has been raised a further 5lb. Major Fortune is another with a bit to prove off his current mark, so a chance is taken on PHANTOMOFTHEPOINTS. The David Pipe-trained six-year-old finished a creditable third in a Grade 3 handicap hurdle at Haydock last time and a repeat effort could see him bang there at the finish. Tune In A Box may prove best of the rest.
RACE SIX WIN: IRON BRIDGE DANGER: GALIA DES LITEAUX
Runner-up last year behind a runaway winner, IRON BRIDGE returns off 6lb lower and may be value for a trainer who has won this twice. The eight-year-old’s return third at Carlisle was encouraging and he gets the vote ahead of Galia Des Liteaux, who is much better than she showed in the Coral Gold Cup. She shaped well for a long way in the Grand National and finished second in the Classic Chase at Warwick last term. Unbeaten in three starts at this track and a stablemate of the selection, Monbeg Genius is 8lb better off with his Haydock conqueror Fontaine Collonges and could have a say. Jubilee Express was last seen scoring comfortably at Haydock in March, while Troytown winner Stuzzikini looks the pick of the Irish.
RACE SEVEN WIN: DAVID’S WELL DANGER: DR T J ECKLEBERG
DAVID’S WELL could not have done much more when landing the odds on his chase debut at Leicester and a 7lb rise may not be enough to prevent him from going in again. Chris Gordon’s charge is narrowly preferred to Dr T J Eckleburg, who drops in class having scored at Haydock last time out. Last year’s winner Zambezi Fix and recent Carlisle scorer King Of Tara are capable of being in the shake-up as well.

Winning Jockey of the 1958 Welsh Grand National A TRIBUTE TO BRIAN LAWRENCE
Brian Lawrence, who sadly died earlier this year, will be forever remembered for his win in the 1958 Welsh Grand National aboard 20-1 outsider Oscar Wilde.
The pair came from last to first to win the 1958 running by three-parts of a length from the prolific Fred Winterridden Crudwell, despite making a complete hash of the last fence.
Owned by Southampton solicitor Thomas T Jasper, Oscar Wilde was trained by W.G.R. Wightman. The eight-year-old found himself winning for the first time in three years thanks to Lawrence’s strong handling.
Lawrence, who as a youngster had nursed high hopes of becoming a soccer star, spent his early days in the saddle riding on the Flat.
However the nearest he got to a Flat winner was as second to Sir Gordon Richards, and so he made the fortuitous decision to switch to jump racing.
Following up from his win two years earlier, he finished third in the 1960 Welsh Grand National behind Clover Bud and Skatelong, riding The Bell.
Brian was well thought of by his fellow jockeys and a proper tough sportsman who knew all about the ups and downs of steeplechasinghaving broken his right leg on two occasions, sustained multiple rib
injuries, breaks to both collar bones and various other injuries of the trade.
A real family man, Brian is sadly missed by all who knew him.

The 88-year-old – winner of the 1971 Derby on Mill Reef – was honoured with a Lifetime Achievement Award at the Welsh Horse Racing Awards in Cardiff in November
Lewis – who was born in Talgarth near Brecon - was a leading jockey on the flat throughout the 1960s and 70s, winning five Classics as well as the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe in 1971, also on Mill Reef.
He retired as a jockey in 1979 before turning to training and achieving more success with almost 500 winners.
In his absence through illness, Lewis’s award was received by his daughter Mary and grandchildren Luci and Alex.
Lewis was one of three jockeys who picked up trophies, alongside current-day riders Sean Bowen, crowned National Hunt Jockey of the Year, and David Probert, awarded Flat Racing Jockey of the Year
Sean Bowen’s Jump Racing Jockey of the Year award comes after another successful year for the Pembrokeshire jockey, who was runner-up to Harry Cobden last season in the Jump Jockeys’ Championship and is currently (at the time of writing) clear of Harry
Flat jockey David Probert from Bargoed has gone past the century mark for winners over 2024, and was named Flat Racing Jockey of the Year
The other headline winners at the ceremony at the Vale of Glamorgan Hotel were trainers David Evans and the pair Peter and Michael Bowen, who were Flat Racing Trainer of the Year and National Hunt Trainer of the Year, respectively.
Trainer David Evans has had 41 winners this year on the flat, whilst Peter Bowen – father of Sean – and son Michael have enjoyed 33 winners so far in a Jumps Championship that runs from May to April.
Libberty Hunter won at Cheltenham earlier this month and was also second in the Grand Annual at Cheltenham in March - was named Chaser of the Year for trainer Evan Williams.
The eight-year-old Libberty Hunter just edged out nominee Al Dancer, who won the Badger Beer Handicap Chase at Wincanton at the start of November with Welsh jockey Callum Pritchard on board, for Welsh trainer Sam Thomas.
Dragon Bet Welsh Champion Hurdle winner Lump Sum was named Hurdler of the Year, Flat Horse of the Year was Blue Prince trained by David Evans, whilst Owner of the Year Awards went to Dai Walters (National Hunt) and Alan Peterson (Flat).
There was also an Outstanding Contribution Award for Welsh trainer Bernard Llewellyn, who earned a rousing standing ovation when he took to the stage.

NEW MANAGER AT CHEPSTOW
There will be a new man officially in charge at Chepstow for its biggest day, with Luke Admans having been appointed the track’s general manager.
He will be no stranger to organising a major race meeting on Welsh Grand National day – this Friday – having been at Lingfield for three years as operations manager. During his tenure, he was instrumental in the growth of the Winter Million and All-Weather Championships.
Yet with those meetings now held away from Lingfield, he has taken on a new challenge. He has been Chepstow’s interim manager since August, after Lindsay Knox departed after just over a year, she having taken over when long-standing boss Phil Bell moved on to a more senior role within Arena Racing Company.
Luke Admans General Manager
Admans, who was a manager for cinema company Cineworld before venturing into the racecourse business, said: “Chepstow is a stunning racecourse, firmly placed in racing’s history books, with a plethora of greats having run and won at the track. It’s a privilege to help guide and drive the racecourse forward into 2025 and beyond.
calendar, something that we host with immense pride. It’s been evident in my short time at Chepstow so far just how much this race means to Wales, and Welsh racing, and keeping the Welsh community at the core of this raceday will be of huge importance to our plans for it moving forward.”
“We’re very much looking forward to finishing off the calendar year with our feature raceday, the Coral Welsh Grand National. It’s a hugely important fixture in the jumps
James Stevens Racing Post
Admans will also oversee the first three-day Unibet Jumps Season Opener next October, after it emerged that the Welsh Champion Hurdle would be moved from Ffos Las to Chepstow next season.

Race Summary:
CLAP OF THUNDER shaped quite well in a warm Cheltenham handicap last month and might be up to defying a penalty with further progress likely Evan Williams tasted success in this race a couple of years ago and his Shade of Winter is respected after making a sound start to his hurdling career over C&D last month. Yhprum’s Law and Tom Lacey’s Piper Park are others who could have a say.
1-2-3:
MIKO DE BEAUCHENE
Miko De Beauchene, a very special horse, will turn 25 on the 1st of January.
Miko was the winner of over £200,000 in prize money throughout his career. He had many career highlights starting with his win of the Coral Welsh Grand National in 2007 followed by a win of the Red Square Vodka Chase at Haydock 2008. Miko quickly went on to Cheltenham Festival in March 2008 to the Pertemps and achieved 2nd in the race whilst trained by Robert and Sally Alner.
The Welsh National was a very emotional win for the whole team, as it was just after the late Robert Alner’s accident with Sally Alner training him and jockey Andrew Thornton steering him to victory through his successes.
C ur ren t owner Tracey Phillips has been associated with Miko for 20 years. Tracey pre trained Miko with her late father until she was lucky enough to have him entrusted into her care when he retired from racing in 2013. His dedicated owner Andrew Wiles has continued to support him during retirement, he has been showjumping, to Hunter Trials, Hunted and has been showing including side saddle classes, he has turned his hoof to everything asked of him, he now enjoys a well-deserved quieter life.
He is an absolute pleasure for his owner Tracey, and Chepstow is pleased to welcome them back today.

The Coral Welsh Grand National is steeped in history with so many legendary horses, trainers, jockeys and owners experiencing success in one of the biggest races in the jumping calendar
The Welsh National was first run in 1895 at Ely, on the outskirts of Cardiff. That was the venue until 1939, when World War II intervened. Racing never resumed at Ely and after the Welsh National was revived at Caerleon in 1948, that course closed down too. Chepstow took over the race in 1949. The first ever Welsh National here was won by Welshman Dick Francis on Fighting Line. He won again on Crudwell in 1956, the year of Devon Loch’s National, when that horse mysteriously fell fifty yards before the winning post with the race at his mercy. Francis later achieved even greater fame for his best-selling novels set in the world of racing.
The race is usually run on soft or heavy going, so stamina and bravery is essential. Apart from the spectacle of the race itself, which can have up to twenty runners, its record shows its value as a stepping-stone to future Grand National and Cheltenham Gold Cup success.
The race also creates plenty of emotive stories – none more so that the victory of Dream Alliance ten years ago for trainer Philip Hobbs and jockey Tom O’Brien. The gelding’s owners The Alliance Partnership had reared the horse on an allotment near Blackwood in the Welsh Valleys. This rags to riches story has now been turned into a Warner Bros film starring Damian Lewis. In 2017, Welsh jockey James Bowen, then just 16, won the race on the Irish trained Raz de Maree who was only three years younger than him! In 2018, jockey Tom O’Brien registered his second victory in the race when Elegant Escape won for trainer Colin Tizzard. The 2019 renewal went to Potters Corner and last year’s winner was Secret Reprieve from the Evan Williams stable.
Corbiere (1982), Earth Summit (1997) Bindaree (2003) and Silver Birch (2004) won the Coral Welsh Grand National before achieving victory at Aintree. Burrough Hill Lad (1983), Synchronised (2010) and Native River (2016) won it before going on to triumph at Cheltenham.
By winning the Welsh National A P McCoy, the most successful jump jockey in history, and winner of the 2010 BBC Sports Personality of the Year, completed a full set of Nationals (English, Irish, Scottish and Welsh).
Some trainers do particularly well – the now-retired Martin Pipe won the race five times, and Jenny Pitman three. In more recent times Richard Lee, Venetia Williams, Nigel Twiston-Davies, Jonjo O’Neill, Paul Nicholls and Colin Tizzard have won it twice.
The Welsh National has a long and successful association with Coral Bookmakers (now Ladbrokes Coral). Its name was added to the race in 1972 and it is now the second longest running sponsorship in the history of British jump racing.

TEN MEMORABLE
WELSH GRAND NATIONAL WINNERS
With the benefit of hindsight, Burrough Hill Lad being set to carry ten stone nine pounds in the 1983 Welsh National was a licence to print money. His trainer Jenny Pitman was so confident that his owners helped themselves to all the odds from 20/1 down to 100/30 and John Francome piloted him to a facile victory. Next year the horse proved himself the best chaser in the land by winning the Cheltenham Gold Cup, also taking the Hennessy and the King George VI Chase in the autumn
Cool Ground jumped well under Luke Harvey in the 1990 Welsh National, drawing clear three fences from home to win by seven lengths and provide the TV presenter with one of the highlights of his riding career The horse won twice more before coming fourth in the Cheltenham Gold Cup After transferring to Toby Balding, in February 1992 he scored again over 3m6f at Chepstow Even so, he was allowed to go off at 25/1 for another tilt at the Gold Cup, which he won by a short head
Trained in Ireland, Carvill’s Hill was one of the most talked-about horses of the late 1980s and early 1990s. He won 14 of his first 20 races, galloping his rivals into the ground Unfortunately he was prone to back trouble, caused by jumping errors In an attempt to rectify it he was sent to Martin Pipe and won the 1991 Rehearsal Chase at Chepstow convincingly Next time out he dominated the Welsh National in unforgettable style, leading all the way under top weight. The 20-length runner-up, Party Politics, who carried 19 pounds less, went on to win the Grand National three months later.
Chepstow being waterlogged, the 1994 Welsh National was run at Newbury on New Year’s Eve. The soft going that winter suited Master Oats, whose trainer Kim Bailey had worked wonders to solve the problem of the horse bursting blood vessels. He was always travelling supremely well for his regular jockey Norman Williamson and strolled to a 20-length win. Past and future Grand National winners Earth Summit and Party Politics were second and third. Four weeks later Master Oats won at Cheltenham by 15 lengths and in March he took the Gold Cup by the same margin.
Nearly three years after winning the Scottish Grand National, in 1997 the Nigel TwistonDavies trained Earth Summit went off at 25/1 in the Welsh equivalent It was his third start following a 634-day absence due to injury He was never out of the first two and won by a length and three quarters from Dom Samourai, who had threatened to snatch the prize away from him in the final few yards. It was Earth Summit’s third course win. Later that season he won the Aintree National and so became the first horse to win English, Scottish and Welsh Nationals.
Often a good showing in the Welsh National is seen as a pointer towards Aintree success and that was the case with Bindaree, who was third in the Chepstow race before going on to take the Grand National in 2002. His trainer Nigel Twiston-Davies had been thinking of giving up the game at that point. Bindaree’s next win was in the 2003 Welsh National. In a great finish he held on by half a length from Sir Rembrandt, who a few months later finished the same distance behind Best Mate in the Cheltenham Gold Cup, with the future National winner Hedgehunter third.
Silver Birch won the 2004 Welsh National in typically testing conditions. Trained by Paul Nicholls and ridden by Ruby Walsh, he was already the winner of five races, including two at Chepstow and the Becher Chase over the Aintree fences, all on soft or heavy ground. With so much going for him he was made the 100/30 favourite. After taking the lead at the third last he was all out to hang on from a host of pursuers. Later he lost his form and was sold, but his new trainer Gordon Elliott engineered an amazing revival and he won the Grand National in 2007
The well-named Dream Alliance was bred by a group of friends from a former mining village in Wales who wanted to try their luck at the Sport of Kings. He was brought up in the untypical surroundings of allotments and slagheaps before being sent to Philip Hobbs, where he proved good enough to finish second in the Hennessy to Denman. A tendon injury put him on the sidelines for 18 months, but he was skilfully nursed back to fitness and after a prep run at Chepstow he won the 2009 Welsh National. His story was made into a film, Dream Horse.
Snow delayed the 2010 Welsh National until a week into the New Year The chance of Synchronised was obvious, having won last season’s Midlands National over an even longer trip. With AP McCoy aboard he galloped on dourly to prevail by three lengths. His next four runs seemed to show his limitations, but then a surprise win in the valuable Lexus Chase at Leopardstown earned him an entry at the 2012 Cheltenham Gold Cup. He won that as well, to give owner JP McManus and trainer Jonjo O’Neill their first success in the race
In 2016 Native River was a rare top-weight winner of the Welsh National Aged only six, and carrying 11 stone 12 pounds in soft ground, he led before halfway and was being hailed as the winner once he went clear four fences out. Raz De Maree, the runner-up, narrowed the gap without ever looking like winning, but his turn came a year later when he won the race Native River finished third in the 2017 Cheltenham Gold Cup and won it the following year after an epic duel with Might Bite Colin Tizzard’s handsome, bold-jumping chestnut, usually ridden by Richard Johnson, won 14 of his 32 starts.
