Welcome to Leger Legends, the first day of the Cazoo St Leger Festival, welcome back, we are very pleased to see you. After an almost fallow year of spectators in 2020 we are tremendously pleased to bring you the 2021 Cazoo St Leger Festival. We begin by thanking our new festival sponsor Cazoo and today we also thank some old friends for their support, Parkes Roofing, EBF, The Japanese Racing Association and Elwick Stud. Our race day presenters today are Doncaster favourite Bobby Beevers will be providing live coverage from the parade ring of this afternoons’ card. The Japan Racing Association Sceptre Fillies Stakes offers seven-furlong specialists the opportunity to win a high- profile sprint before the end of the flat season. The Legends Race at 2.50pm promises to be an exciting one as Richard Johnson two times Cheltenham Gold Cup winner and Barry Geraghty who boasts 43 Cheltenham winners, take on the challenge of a flat track. If you are sharing your day on social media, please do remember to tag us in using #Cazoostleger. Finally, its’ been a challenging 18 months for everyone and we are still finding our feet as we navigate our way back from the pandemic, so please be kind to the team on site today, they are doing the best they can, so be the best you can be. Enjoy your day.

Star Ratings Explained Each horse has been given a star rating, these are defined below: HHHHH Selected to win the race. HHHHI Good chance of being placed. HHHII By no means out of the reckoning but at least one or two hold stronger claims HHIII Unlikely to win but not totally without hope. HIIII Can be given little or no chance.
OFFICIAL BHA RATINGS EXPLAINED The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances). The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating.

GUEST HELP DESK IN THE COUNTY ENCLOSURE AT THE BOTTOM OF THE ESCALATORS AND AT THE GIANT TENT SITUATED IN THE GRANDSTAND. Look out for our team dressed in pink or one of the Pink Bowler hatted staff who will be able to help.
Meet the Faces SAM PARKER ESTATES MANAGER
WHAT IS YOUR ROLE WITHIN THE COMPANY? I am the Estates Manager for the whole site encompassing the racecourse and the Hilton Garden Inn. I look after a team of ten permanent and casual grounds staff. We are here to keep the estate in tip top condition and ensure we keep an even track and good going. BEFORE JOINING THE ORGANISATION, WHAT OTHER JOBS HAVE YOU HELD? I started on a Turf farm, mowing the grass, and rolling it, then when it was cut, I would stack it! Then I worked for Westmorland Plant hire, as a banks man digging up roads. Then I started at Doncaster in 2011 as a grounds man, I spent three years doing the development programmes, which my wife pushed me to do. Then I did my intermediate Institute of Groundsmanship (IOG) and also the advanced IOG which gave me the qualifications to run a race-day. I then became Assistant Estate Manager, then Head Groundsman, before taking up my current role earlier this year. WHAT IS THE MOST INTERESTING OR FUNNY EVENT YOU EXPERIENCED ON THE CLOCK? There are many I could mention, as a ground person, you are out in all weathers and experience all that is good and great about working out-doors. On one particularly damp day, we did – accidently cover a colleague head to toe in rain water, as we were perhaps travelling a little too fast through a rather large puddle and not seeing the colleague in advance, we certainly heard his cry, afterwards….. He was somewhat drenched, it’s a few years ago now, but I m not sure he has forgiven us.
WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE WORK MEMORY? At Doncaster we have two tracks, Flat and National Hunt. My proudest moment is delivering a full jumps season with no fatalities, and knowing all the planning and hard work had paid off, together with some support from mother nature with the weather. WHAT IS THE BEST THING ABOUT THE CAZOO ST LEGER FESTIVAL? It is the one day of the year, when after the racing is finished, the entire grounds team come together and have a beer and team photo. Its’ become an annual event that we all look forward to. WHERE WOULD YOU RECOMMEND OUR GUESTS VISITED WHILST IN DONCASTER? As a family we really enjoy the Yorkshire Wildlife Park, we recently took the children to the Evolution Experience restaurant, and we all really enjoyed it. WHAT DOES LEGER WEEK MEAN TO YOU PERSONALLY? It is the pinnacle of what we do. We work hard to ensure that the track, lawns and site as a whole, looks as good as it can – weather dependant… for every meeting. With the Leger the eyes of the world really are on the track and the whole team is very proud of what we deliver. WHAT DOES YOUR LEGER WORKING WEEK LOOK LIKE? We are up early to walk the track, and ensure everything is on order for the days meeting, then we run the race day, as part of the follow vehicle team, before watering the track, preparing the lawns after guests have left each night, turning the stables and yard each night ready for racing the following day. Team work is the key and, and no one moans as every one knows what to expect and enjoys the banter and watching the town coming together to enjoy the racecourse.

Scarborough Stakes TODAY’S FEATURE RACE
The feature race of today’s card is the Cazoo Scarborough Stakes (Class 1) Listed Race worth £45,000 in prize money.
The fine filly then went on to achieve back-to-back victories in the Group One Nunthorpe Stakes at York for owner David Metcalfe.
Since its first running in 1983, the listed sprint, perhaps known simply as Doncaster’s ‘flying five furlongs’ has been won by some spectacularly fast horses. The fastest recorded time was CELTIC MILL with an impressive 57:28seconds under Frankie Dettori in 2004. The David Barker trained gelding, also won the race in 2006 when it was run at York.
A similar feat was achieved by SOLE POWER in 2012; the Irish trained gelding boasted a distinctive style, one in which he was restrained by Johnny Murtagh for most of the race, before producing a single burst of acceleration in the closing stages perhaps a cue in his name ‘SOLE POWER.’
The race has also seen some fearsome fillies, perhaps most popularly the Michael Doddstrained MECCA’S ANGEL, who beat trainer Clive Cox’s Reckless Abandon, taking the lead on the approach to the final furlong and won by two and a quarter-lengths, for jockey Paul Mulrennan.
Tarboosh provided Kevin Stott and Paul Midgley a Scarborough Stakes win in 2020.
The unique racing style assisted SOLE POWER in going on to achieve back-to-back victories in both the Nunthorpe Stakes and the Group One King’s Stand Stakes at Royal Ascot, both in 2013 and 2014.

ARECIBO is enjoying a fine season for his new yard, winning a pair of handicaps prior to a cracking second in the Group 1 King’s Stand at Royal Ascot in June. Far from disgraced in strong company since, he’s fancied to go well back at listed level.
