Took form to another level when narrow winner of Queen’s Vase at Royal Ascot. Not disgraced back down in trip when fourth in Grand Prix de Paris and this test will suit.

Star Ratings Explained

Each horse has been given a star rating, these are defined below:

HHHHH Selected to win the race.

HHHHI Good chance of being placed.

HHHII By no means out of the reckoning but at least one or two hold stronger claims

HHIII Unlikely to win but not totally without hope.

HIIII Can be given little or no chance.

OFFICIAL BHA RATINGS EXPLAINED

The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability.

The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances).

The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating.

You must be 18 or over to place a bet

You may be asked to provide proof of your age when placing a bet

A BEGINNER’S GUIDE TO RACING

Allowance The weight concession the horse is given to compensate for its rider’s inexperience

Amateur (Rider) on racecards, their names are usually prefixed by Mr, Mrs, etc. to indicate their amateur license-holder status.

Apprentice A trainee Flat jockey connected to the stable of a licensed trainer. Apprentices have a weight allowance when they ride in races against professional jockeys and can compete for the annual Apprentice title, given to the winner of the most races during the season.

Bar Term used when describing bookmakers’ prices. e.g. ‘4-1 bar two’ means that you can obtain at least 4-1 about any horse except for the first two in betting.

Bit Metal part of the bridle that sits in a horse’s mouth. The reins are then attached to the bit and used by the jockey to control the horse

Blinkers A form of headgear worn by the horse, consisting of a hood with cups around the eyes They are used to limit a horse’s vision and reduce distractions, with the aim of making it concentrate.

Cheekpieces Strips of sheepskin that are attached to the side of a horse’s bridle They partially obscure a horse’s rear vision, with the aim of getting the horse to concentrate on racing.

Clerk of the Course Racecourse official responsible for the overall racecourse management, including the preparation of the racing surface.

Clerk of the Scales Racecourse official whose chief duty is to weigh the riders before and after a race to ensure proper weight is carried.

Colours Jacket (‘silks’) worn by jockey to identify a horse A horse runs in its owner’s colours which are registered with Weatherbys

The colours to be worn by each jockey are shown on racecards.

Colt Male, ungelded horse, up to four years old

Conditions race A race in which horses are allotted extra weight according to factors including sex, age, whether they are a previous winner etc. This is a better-class race for horses just below Group or Listed level.

Connections The owner and trainer of a racehorse

Distance The length of a race

Dam Mother of a horse.

Draw A horse’s starting position in the stalls allotted in races on the Flat. Stall numbers are drawn at random by Weatherbys (except in a handful of top races that allow each horse’s connections, having been randomly selected, to choose the stall number for their horse). A horse with a seemingly advantageous draw is said to be “well drawn”. Stalls are used for Flat racing only.

Filly Female horse four-years-old or younger.

Foal Horse of either sex from its birth until 1 January the following year

Furlong 220 yards (one eighth of a mile). The numbered posts on British racecourses count the furlongs back from the winning post.

Gelding Castrated horse

Going Description of the course conditions under foot.

Hand Unit of four inches in which a horse’s height is measured at the shoulder

Judge Official responsible for declaring the finishing order and distances between horses.

Juvenile Two-year old horse

Maiden Horse which has not yet won a race

Handicap A race where each horse is allotted a different weight to carry, according to the official handicap ratings determined by the BHA Handicappers. The theory is that all horses run on a fair and equal basis - the ‘perfect’ handicap being one where all the runners finish in a dead-heat.

Mare Female horse aged five years old or above Middle Distances On the Flat, races beyond a mile and up to 1m6f are the middle distances. A middledistance horse is one that runs mainly over such distances or is regarded as being suitable for those distances.

Penalty Weight added to the handicap weight of a horse which has won since the weights were published.

Photo Finish Electronic photo device which determines minimal distance in a close finish.

Racecard The runners and riders of the day within this raceday programme.

Rating A measure of the ability of a horse on a scale starting at zero and going into three figures Flat and Jump racing use different scales; the highest-rated Flat horse is usually in the 130s and the top-rated jumper in the 180s.

Schooled Trained to jump.

Sire Father of a horse.

Sprint races Flat races run over a distance of five or six furlongs.

Stewards Enquiry Enquiry by a panel of men and women responsible for seeing rules are adhered to into a race’s running.

Tongue Tie Strip of material tied around a horse’s tongue and lower jaw to keep it from swallowing its tongue, which can clog its air passage. A horse wearing a tongue tie is denoted on a racecard by a small t next to the horse’s weight (t1 indicates that the horse is wearing a tongue tie in a race for the first time)

Under Starter’s Orders Occurs when the race is about to start

Visor Similar to blinkers, but with a slit in each eye cup to allow some lateral vision. A horse wearing a visor is denoted on a racecard by a small v next to the horse’s weight (v1 indicates that the horse is wearing a visor in a race for the first time).

Weighing In/Out Each jockey (wearing his racing kit and carrying his saddle) must stand on official weighing scales before and after the race, so that the Clerk of the Scales can check that the jockey is carrying the correct weight allotted to his horse If a jockey is above the allotted weight before the race, his horse can still compete but must carry overweight. When the weights carried by the winner and placed horses have been verified after the race, there will be an announcement that they have ‘weighed in’. This confirms the race result and at this point bookmakers will pay out on successful bets.

Yearling Horse of either sex from 1 January to 31 December of the year following its birth.

MEET THE FACES

WHAT IS YOUR ROLE WITHIN THE COMPANY? Hospitality and Events Manager for Doncaster Racecourse

HOW LONG HAVE YOU WORKED FOR ARENA RACING COMPANY AND IN WHAT CAPACITY?

About 3 years, I started as a casual race day manager and was then offered the opportunity to move into a full-time position.

WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE WORK MEMORY OR STORY?

One of my favourite stories was when a member of the public came into reception asking if they could borrow a racehorse as they needed to get to Rotherham. After some explaining, we convinced them to get a taxi instead.

WHAT DOES YOUR BETFRED ST LEGER WORKING WEEK LOOK LIKE?

The St Leger week is long, it’s a week of early starts and late finishes, but it’s necessary to make sure everything runs smoothly.

WHAT IS THE BEST THING ABOUT THE BETFRED ST LEGER FESTIVAL?

The excitement that you can feel building throughout Doncaster as the Leger gets closer It truly is an event that brings the whole city together and the racecourse is at the centre of it all.

WHAT IS THE BEST THING ABOUT WORKING AT DONCASTER RACECOURSE?

How as a team we deliver such a variety of events throughout the year We obviously have racing first, but we also have amazing events such as Christmas Live where we host around 10,000 guests over the festive period. Working well as a team is so rewarding, its cliché, but everyone that works here are extremely proud of what they do and really do treat each other like extended family

WHAT IS YOU FAVOURITE PART OF THE RACECOURSE?

I really enjoy the early mornings, before racegoers arrive The peacefulness of the racecourse is a wonderful sight from the Eco Power stand.

WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE DAY OF THE BETFRED ST LEGER FESTIVAL AND WHY?

Ladies Day; the competition for best outfit and the general atmosphere is brilliant and overall it’s a really fun day.

FLYING CHILDERS STAKES

The Flying Childers Stakes is a Group 2 race run over 5-furlongs for two-year-olds. First run in 1967, the race was named after Flying Childers, a famous 18th-century racehorse who was bred near Doncaster. The Flying Childers did hold Group 1 status in the first 12 years of its history before it was downgraded to a Group 2 in 1979

Some high-class two-year-old’s feature on the Flying Childers’ Roll of Honor including top sprinters Green Desert (1985) and Fleeting Spirit (2007). Green Desert is one of five horses trained by Sir Michael Stoute to have won the Flying Childers throughout the years, and as such he is currently the trainer with the most wins in this contest to his name.

Frankie Dettori has won the Flying Childers three times in the last eight years, and he is the most successful rider in the history of the race with six wins. Since 1990 there has been just one

has been one Irish-trained winner of the Flying d Childers which came in 2011 s came

when Requinto landed the spoils for David Wachman, while only one favorite has won this event in the last 10 years (2015; Gutaifan). Gutaifan still holds the record as the fastest winner of the Flying Childers, completing the 5-furlongs in a time of 58:04.

Racegoers were treated to a dramatic finish in last year’s renewal of the Flying Childers as the Richard Hannon-trained Trillium mowed down The Platinum Queen late on to get up by a short-head in a photo-finish. This gave Hannon a third win in the last 10 years in the Flying Childers which he will no

DONCASTER CUP

The Doncaster Cup is the oldest race ran at Doncaster Racecourse having first been run in 1766. It has held Group 2 status for 20 years and is the final leg of the Stayers’ Triple Crown which is made up of the Ascot Gold Cup (Group 1), Goodwood Cup (Group 1) and Doncaster Cup (Group 2).

The staying contest has been won by some household names throughout the years including Gold Cup heroes Stradivarius, Estimate and Double Trigger

One of the most memorable recent racedays on Town Moor was witnessed in 2021 when Stradivarius retained his Doncaster Cup title with the minimum of fuss. He soared home to win by just over two-lengths under Frankie Dettori who gave the seven-year-old a hands-and-heels finish.

The late Joe Mercer won this race a remarkable eight times across four decades during his time in the saddle, a record which has still not been surpassed to this day.

not been da Sir Henry Cecil and Cecil Boyd- r Cecil and Rochfort still share the title of ort

the most successful trainer in the history of the Doncaster Cup with seven victories each.

Experience counts for an awful lot in the Doncaster Cup with eight of the last 10 winners aged 5-yearsold or older Only a pair of threeyear-old’s have won this race in the last 20 years – Saddler’s Rock (2011) & Desert Skyline (2017).

Seven of the last 10 favorites have obliged with two of those winners sent off at odds-on. Coltrane came out on top in a thrilling conclusion to the 2022 renewal of the Doncaster Cup as he edged out Trueshan and Lismore by a narrow margin to give his trainer Andrew Balding a second win in this contest
