Hello and welcome to Doncaster Racecourse for the second day of the Betfred St Leger Festival. We are delighted you’ve joined us here today for Doncaster Cup Day and we would like to thank our festival sponsors Betfred and our race sponsors Coopers Marquees, Carlsberg Marston’s, EBF and Believe Money for their generous support of today’s fixture.

There are 8 races on the card and our raceday presenter Bobby Beevers, resident tipster Roger Hart and Matt Hulmes from Betfred will be in the Parade Ring at around 1:15 to run through the racecard with you and hopefully pick you out some winners!

Hollie Doyle and Trueshan are gearing up and set to partner once again, making their highly anticipated return to The Betfred St Leger Festival. The duo will be back to defend their crown in the £140,000 Betfred Howard Wright Doncaster Cup at 3:35, where they aim to recreate the magic of last year’s victory. Trueshan lit up Doncaster last year by storming and impressive win by a length and a quarter. Will they deliver another showstopping win?

We have a pianist in main reception playing intermittently throughout the day and a roving brass band. Onside Britpop will be performing live on the Champagne Lawn after racing for 60 minutes and our Grandstand and Family guests are welcome to upgrade and enjoy the entertainment.

Olympic medalist and former World Champion Robin Reid will be meeting and mingling throughout the day with his medal and WBC belt. Robin had a successful career in the Super Middleweight division. He turned professional in 1993 and just three years later won the WBC Super Middleweight Championship and went on to successfully defend his title three times Also, Andy’s Man Club are in the Exhibition Hall so stop by and see them if you’d like more information or just a chat

We still have a limited number of tickets available for the final two days of The Betfred St Leger Festival if you’d like to join us again. Tomorrow is the highlight of the four-day festival featuring the Betfred St Leger Stakes; and our St Leger Sunday Funday is a great day out for the whole family. As well as the racing, there’ll be lots of FREE entertainment and activities for everyone to enjoy!

We’d love you to join us on Sunday 3rd November for our Fireworks Spooky Spectacular! Enjoy all our FREE family entertainment before we light up the skies over Doncaster Racecourse with our colourful fireworks display!

Have you started thinking about your Christmas party yet? Join us in December as we bring you ‘A Night at the Movies’ at our Christmas Live party nights. You’ll enjoy live performances and music, a festive three-course meal, afterdinner disco and much, much more! Or, for something a little bit different, join us on Friday 20th December as Ricky Wilson plays the biggest dancefloor hits for one night only. A fabulous selection of festive street food is included along with a one-hour DJ set from the Kaiser Chiefs frontman. We predict it’ll be a riot Tickets to all our Christmas party nights are selling fast so reserve yours today so you don’t miss out!

Tickets for all our upcoming racedays and events are available now at www.doncaster-racecourse.co.uk

Finally, everyone at Doncaster Racecourse was deeply saddened to hear the news about the passing of racing journalist Howard Wright. Howard was a regular at Doncaster and attended every single St Leger Festival since 1948. As a tribute, today’s feature race has been named in his honour Howard will be greatly missed by all.

As always, our team here at Doncaster are committed to doing our very best to ensure you enjoy The Betfred St Leger Festival 2024 and we value any feedback you may have

Star

Ratings Explained

Each horse has been given a star rating, these are defined below: HHHHH Selected to win the race.

HHHHI Good chance of being placed.

HHHII By no means out of the reckoning but at least one or two hold stronger claims

HHIII Unlikely to win but not totally without hope.

HIIII Can be given little or no chance.

OFFICIAL BHA RATINGS EXPLAINED

The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability.

The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances).

The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating.

A BEGINNER’S GUIDE TO RACING

Allowance The weight concession the horse is given to compensate for its rider’s inexperience

Amateur (Rider) on racecards, their names are usually prefixed by Mr, Mrs, etc. to indicate their amateur license-holder status.

Apprentice A trainee Flat jockey connected to the stable of a licensed trainer. Apprentices have a weight allowance when they ride in races against professional jockeys and can compete for the annual Apprentice title, given to the winner of the most races during the season.

Bar Term used when describing bookmakers’ prices. e.g. ‘4-1 bar two’ means that you can obtain at least 4-1 about any horse except for the first two in betting.

Bit Metal part of the bridle that sits in a horse’s mouth. The reins are then attached to the bit and used by the jockey to control the horse

Blinkers A form of headgear worn by the horse, consisting of a hood with cups around the eyes They are used to limit a horse’s vision and reduce distractions, with the aim of making it concentrate.

Cheekpieces Strips of sheepskin that are attached to the side of a horse’s bridle They partially obscure a horse’s rear vision, with the aim of getting the horse to concentrate on racing.

Clerk of the Course Racecourse official responsible for the overall racecourse management, including the preparation of the racing surface.

Clerk of the Scales Racecourse official whose chief duty is to weigh the riders before and after a race to ensure proper weight is carried.

Colours Jacket (‘silks’) worn by jockey to identify a horse A horse runs in its owner’s colours which are registered with Weatherbys The colours to be worn by each jockey are shown on racecards.

Colt Male, ungelded horse, up to four years old

Conditions race A race in which horses are allotted extra weight according to factors including sex, age, whether they are a previous winner etc. This is a better-class race for horses just below Group or Listed level.

Connections The owner and trainer of a racehorse

Distance The length of a race

Dam Mother of a horse

Draw A horse’s starting position in the stalls allotted in races on the Flat. Stall numbers are drawn at random by Weatherbys (except in a handful of top races that allow each horse’s connections, having been randomly selected, to choose the stall number for their horse). A horse with a seemingly advantageous draw is said to be “well drawn”. Stalls are used for Flat racing only.

Filly Female horse four-years-old or younger

Foal Horse of either sex from its birth until 1 January the following year

Furlong 220 yards (one eighth of a mile). The numbered posts on British racecourses count the furlongs back from the winning post.

Gelding Castrated horse

Going Description of the course conditions under foot

Hand Unit of four inches in which a horse’s height is measured at the shoulder

Judge Official responsible for declaring the finishing order and distances between horses.

Juvenile Two-year old horse

Maiden Horse which has not yet won a race.

Handicap A race where each horse is allotted a different weight to carry, according to the official handicap ratings determined by the BHA Handicappers. The theory is that all horses run on a fair and equal basis - the ‘perfect’ handicap being one where all the runners finish in a dead-heat.

Mare Female horse aged five years old or above

Middle Distances On the Flat, races beyond a mile and up to 1m6f are the middle distances. A middledistance horse is one that runs mainly over such distances or is regarded as being suitable for those distances.

Penalty Weight added to the handicap weight of a horse which has won since the weights were published.

Photo Finish Electronic photo device which determines minimal distance in a close finish.

Racecard The runners and riders of the day within this raceday programme.

Rating A measure of the ability of a horse on a scale starting at zero and going into three figures Flat and Jump racing use different scales; the highest-rated Flat horse is usually in the 130s and the top-rated jumper in the 180s.

Schooled Trained to jump.

Sire Father of a horse.

Sprint races Flat races run over a distance of five or six furlongs.

Stewards Enquiry Enquiry by a panel of men and women responsible for seeing rules are adhered to into a race’s running.

Tongue Tie Strip of material tied around a horse’s tongue and lower jaw to keep it from swallowing its tongue, which can clog its air passage. A horse wearing a tongue tie is denoted on a racecard by a small t next to the horse’s weight (t1 indicates that the horse is wearing a tongue tie in a race for the first time)

Under Starter’s Orders Occurs when the race is about to start

Visor Similar to blinkers, but with a slit in each eye cup to allow some lateral vision. A horse wearing a visor is denoted on a racecard by a small v next to the horse’s weight (v1 indicates that the horse is wearing a visor in a race for the first time).

Weighing In/Out Each jockey (wearing his racing kit and carrying his saddle) must stand on official weighing scales before and after the race, so that the Clerk of the Scales can check that the jockey is carrying the correct weight allotted to his horse If a jockey is above the allotted weight before the race, his horse can still compete but must carry overweight. When the weights carried by the winner and placed horses have been verified after the race, there will be an announcement that they have ‘weighed in’. This confirms the race result and at this point bookmakers will pay out on successful bets.

Yearling Horse of either sex from 1 January to 31 December of the year following its birth.

All owners can enjoy 20 syndicate badges at all fixtures, on all ARC tracks*

All ARC Tracks operate dedicated and exclusive syndicate lounge facilities on racedays.

FLYING CHILDERS STAKES

The Flying Childers Stakes is a Group 2 race run over 5-furlongs for two-year-olds. First run in 1967, the race was named after Flying Childers, a famous 18th-century racehorse who was bred near Doncaster. The Flying Childers did hold Group 1 status in the first 12 years of its history before it was downgraded to a Group 2 in 1979.

Some high-class two-year-old’s feature on the Flying Childers’ Roll of Honor including top sprinters Green Desert (1985), Fleeting Spirit (2007) and Breeders’ Cup winner Big Evs (2023). Green Desert is one of five horses trained by Sir Michael Stoute to have won the Flying Childers throughout the years, and as such he is currently the trainer with the most wins in this contest to his name.

Since 1990 there has been just one Irish-trained winner of the Flying Childers which came in 2011 when Requinto landed the spoils for David Wachman, while only one favorite has won this event in the last 10

won event 10 s years (2015; Gutaifan). s Gut

Gutaifan still holds the record as the fastest winner of the Flying Childers, completing the 5-furlongs in a time of 58:04.

Big Evs emphatically bounced back from his Nunthorpe Stakes (G1) disappointment in this race last year as he led from pillar to post. None of his rivals could land a glove on him and the explosive son of Blue Point followed up with success at Santa Anita in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf Sprint (G1).

DONCASTER CUP

The Doncaster Cup is the oldest race run at Doncaster Racecourse having first been run in 1766. It has held Group 2 status for 21 years and is the final leg of the Stayers’ Triple Crown which is made up of the Ascot Gold Cup (Group 1), Goodwood Cup (Group 1) and Doncaster Cup (Group 2).

The staying contest has been won by some household names throughout the years including Gold Cup heroes Stradivarius, Estimate and Double Trigger. The late Joe Mercer won this race a remarkable eight times across four decades during his time in the saddle, a record which has still not been surpassed to this day. Sir Henry Cecil and Cecil Boyd-Rochfort still share th successful tr of the Doncas seven victorie

Seven of the last 11 favorites have obliged with two of those winners sent off at odds-on.

Despite racing extremely keenly under Hollie Doyle on his return from a four-month break and being headed with a furlong to go, Trueshan

A TRIBUTE TO HOWARD WRIGHT

WORDS BY RACING POST COLLEAGUE DAVID CARR

There are half a million reasons to remember the St Leger of 1948; that was the size of the crowd that squeezed in to witness the richest race ever run in Britain. Among them were King George VI and Queen Elizabeth, marking the first time royalty had attended Doncaster’s final Classic in 40 years. But there was also a future member of racing royalty present—Howard Wright, a very young boy at the time, born in the city just three years earlier, who was among the hordes cheering home Black Tarquin.

When His and Her Majesties returned to Town Moor for the Leger last year, it was a new king and queen who took the acclaim of a slightly smaller crowd, but it was the same Howard who was there, less wide-eyed than on that first visit but, deep down, probably just as excited, maintaining a remarkable record Unlike the royals, he had not missed a single Leger since, having been an everpresent at 76 successive runnings. Howard was not only a stalwart of the event but also an exceptional

journalist—quite possibly the best. His unparalleled knowledge of the racing industry was matched only by his ability to reach the supposedly unreachable within it, telling stories that nobody else had even sniffed.

Those talents might have been put to very different use had he not been rescued from a civil service job in London in 1964, when he joined fellow Yorkshire iconoclast Phil Bull at Timeform in Halifax. From there, he moved to the Sheffield Morning Telegraph and then to the Daily Telegraph back in London, before being headhunted by the team planning the launch of the Racing Post. It was a winning selection, as Howard, initially news editor and then long-time industry editor, proceeded to inform, educate, and entertain the readership with stories, features, and columns that got under the skin of the sport—like the Spanish Inquisition with a Doncaster accent. With a ladleful of charm to complement his flattened vowels, Howard had a beguiling way of earning the confidence of the great and the good—not always the same people in racing—and using their unattributed words to uncover the truth.

His renown wasn’t limited to the UK either He became the trusted face of British racing journalism in America, Australia, Dubai, and Hong Kong. Even the communists in China recognised his importance, ensuring that when they opened a new racecourse in 2019, Mr W was in attendance. In recent years, I marked Howard’s presence at Doncaster on St Leger day with a photograph, immaculately

turned out as ever, shared on social media. The worldwide outpouring of loving comments it received always bowled me over

Howard officially “retired” from the Racing Post in 2012, but retirement was one of the few words this master writer did not know. He remained present when it mattered, including at the National Horseracing College just outside Doncaster, an organisation he championed tirelessly, serving as a trustee since 1990 and vice-chairman since 2004. His words still appeared in the Post as recently as April, but sadly there will be no St Leger day tweet from him this year, as Howard passed away in August at the age of 79.

No journalist ever had an easier job than the one tasked with gathering tributes, as the biggest names in racing praised “the best of the best,” who “knew the industry better than anyone” and whose “professionalism, integrity, and innate sense of fair play shone through.” This year’s meeting fittingly features the Betfred Howard Wright Doncaster Cup, and we welcome his widow, Anne, as the press room is officially named in honour of its most distinguished occupant. Black Tarquin, it seems, really did start something.
