Doncaster Racecard - Saturday 25th January

Virgin Bet Great Yorkshire Chase Raceday Preview

12:20

Belfrina will be looking to atone for her last flight fall when looking all-over the winner here on her previous start. Matwana has to be deemed as a fortunate winner that day, but she too ran a solid race and will offer stern opposition once more to Belfrina. Morning Air could well have the measure of them both, as she showed when beating the boys in impressive fashion on debut.

12:55

Thomas Mor, who came back after a long absence to win nicely over hurdles, now takes on fences for the first time Rock My Way has recently joined Joe Tizzard and we are bound to see more improvement, so this consistent seven-year-old can’t be dismissed lightly Grand Albert is still relatively lowly weighted and looks certain to be a strong contender here after a storming last run at Wetherby.

13:30

It is probably going to need an impressive performance to lower the colours of the hattrick chasing Nells Son A form line suggests Nells Son has the beating of Calico when the pair’s recent form is weighed against the consistent Matata. General Medrano went off a well backed short price favourite last time, but ultimately was let down by some poor jumping. This looks quite a warm contest and he’ll need to have polished up his act in the meantime, but if so will be a danger to all.

14:05

A tricky Grade 2 Novice Hurdle over 3 miles. The early betting suggests the front three runners at the market - Western Knight, Ma Shantou and Moon Rocket -are closely matched. Western Knight is the likely candidate to go off favourite for Joe Tizzard and is in decent form since the start of the season with two wins and a second, with the only defeat coming at Cheltenham in December. Western Knight is clearly well thought of by connections and currently holds two entries for the Cheltenham Festival in March. Our selection is the lightly raced 5yo Moon Rocket for Kim Bailey & Mat Nicholls. He is unbeaten in two runs this season, improving with a combined winning distance of 20 lengths. We don’t think there will be any issue with the trip or going and we expect Moon Rocket to continue to improve

14:40

A Grade 2 Mares Only Hurdle over 3 miles. The likely favourite, and our selection, is Kateira trained by the in-form trainer Dan Skelton. She is extremely well thought of and holds entries for the Cheltenham Festival in March in the Mares and Stayers Hurdle The danger and second favourite is the Irish trained challenger Jetara, who has kept good company this season and been solidly supported in the betting market on each occasion, with today's small field likely to suit.

15:15

The Virgin Bet Great Yorkshire Chase is traditionally one of the toughest handicap chases of the year This is certainly a race for the each way bettors at around 5/1 the field. You could make a case for plenty of the 17 runners that will go to post today but we have narrowed it down to three runners against the field in the shape of Famous Bridge, Bowtogreatness and Idalko Bihoue Our top selection is Famous Bridge, who we think at around 14/1 and 5 places is a decent each-way option. He comes here today on a fair mark of 136, having had two runs this season, and was beaten favourite at Haydock just before Christmas off a mark of 137.

15:50

A Grade 2 handicap hurdle The selection here each-way is the improving Paul Collins runner To Chase a Dream who has run three times this season, winning twice when favourite - both times at Carlisle (the trainer’s local course). His first run of the season, back in October, saw him win from a mark of 115; the handicapper clearly noticed the improvement and he was sent off on a very good run at Cheltenham in December 127lbs in what looks a stronger race than this. He receives a mark of 129 today, a hike of 14lbs across 3 runs. Another interesting runner (and likely favourite) is the Nicky Hendersontrained Punctuation, who hasn’t run since the flat in May at Goodwood. He looks to have been given a fair chance by the handicapper off a mark of 133.

Star Ratings Explained

Each horse has been given a star rating, these are defined below:

HHHHH Selected to win the race

HHHHI Good chance of being placed.

HHHII By no means out of the reckoning but at least one or two hold stronger claims HHIII Unlikely to win but not totally without hope. HIIII Can be given little or no chance.

OFFICIAL BHA RATINGS EXPLAINED

The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability.

The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances).

The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating.

FANCY THAT: B Pauling won this race in 2016, 2019 and 2021. The stable runs JIG’S FORGE today. LONGEST TRAVELLER: WESTERN KNIGHT trained by J Tizzard, Sherborne, 219 miles.

None of these can be ruled out in a cracking River Don but the vote goes to WESTERN KNIGHT who still looked a work in progress when an excellent second in a Cheltenham Grade 2 last time out and can quickly resume winning ways here. Ma Shantou could emerge as the chief threat on his first go over 3m, although Jig’s Force, Yellow Car, Moon Rocket and Gamesters Guy all need factoring in too.
