Star Ratings Explained

Each horse has been given a star rating, these are defined below:

HHHHH Selected to win the race

HHHHI Good chance of being placed

HHHII By no means out of the reckoning but at least one or two hold stronger claims.

HHIII Unlikely to win but not totally without hope

HIIII Can be given little or no chance.

OFFICIAL BHA RATINGS EXPLAINED

The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions

A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances). The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in nonhandicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating For novice steeple chasers, the latest hurdle race rating may be shown until such time as the Handicappers allot a separate steeple chase rating Such ratings are prefixed by the letter h.

Welcome to the second Swansea Bay Business Club Race Day at Ffos Las Racecourse.

Today is the last National Hunt race meeting for the season at Ffos Las, and what an amazing year its been for us all at Wales’s newest racecourse with a season of superb jumps racing, and with our average field numbers per race and attendances up year on year yet again it shows that all the hard work and dedication put in by the Ground Staff and Operations teams has really paid dividends.

I would like to take this opportunity to personally thank all our Owners and Trainers for their continuing support and wish them good luck today, and I hope you have another great day at Ffos Las.

And when it comes to winners, I have to congratulate Pembrokeshire’s own Sean Bowen (pictured above) who is now the leading jockey at Ffos Las Racecourse since we first opened back in 2009, as he surpassed A P McCoy’s long standing record of 69 winners at our last meeting.

It’s an absolute pleasure to have West Wales’s largest Networking organisation back with us again at Bridles Restaurant and many thanks to President Mike Morgan and Vice President Amy Seppman for making this great day happen again. Swansea Bay Business Club hold monthly events with some brilliant speakers at amazing venues across the region , to find out more please visit www.swanseabaybusinessclub.com for details.

Looking forward, our first Flat racing opener takes place on Sunday June 25th where we have our Beer and Cider festival, with the legendary Wurzels playing live after racing (I could hear you singing “I’ve got a Brand New Combine Harvester” to yourself when you read that)! Then we have a full summer of racing with the highlight being Ladies Day on Friday 25th August with James Argent (Arg from TOWIE) and his band plus the Million Dollar Men entertaining us all after racing, who knows we may get a visit from the the great GC (Gemma Collins) to watch him perform in West Wales! Check out ffoslas-racecourse.co.uk for full details

So please enjoy the day, and always remember “You really can’t beat a great day at the races!”

WELCOME

Evacuation Procedures

If an incident occurs which is beyond our control, it is important that you are aware of how we intend to look after you in the event of an emergency.

As part of our Safety management, we have employed professionally trained and experienced stewards and you will see them at various points throughout the racecourse. In the event of a situation, which requires partial or full evacuation of the stands or racecourse, announcements will be broadcast and stewards will undertake the responsibility of ushering you to a place of safety; it is essential that you follow their instructions. Please take your immediate belongings with you and proceed out of the area quickly and calmly with the guidance of the stewards

The evacuation procedures have been carefully planned to lead you to a safe area Should it be necessary to evacuate the course itself, there will be two main options; firstly to return to your vehicles if safe to do so and leave via the main entrance

Secondly, should it not be safe to return to your vehicles, you will be requested to leave via emergency evacuation gates, onto the racecourse itself, where you will receive further instructions.

It may give you peace of mind if you pre plan and agree a meeting place, just in case you become separated from your party. The above is precautionary only and we trust that the procedures will never be required. However, in the event of an emergency, remember;

• Take your belongings with you.

• Under the directions of the stewards, proceed quickly and calmly to the safe area.

Glasses & Bottles

Broken glasses and bottles are dangerous. In the interests of safety and the comfort of others please do not carry drinks or food on to the steppings of the stand, or the areas adjacent to the parade ring or unsaddling enclosure. RACE STATS

LEADING COURSE TRAINER (17-22): E Williams (42 wins from 365 runners, 12%) runs HERONORD & SYDNEY BLUES TRAINER-IN-FORM (LAST 14 DAYS): P Bowen (4 wins from 13 runners, 31%) runs GAVIN LONGEST TRAVELLER: JOYFUL KIT trained by H Brown, Sturminster Newton, 151 miles.

Having signed off with a win on his final outing for Joe Ponting, GAVIN showed a good attitude to follow up in a C&D handicap recently, so there’s reason to think he can complete the hat-trick in what doesn’t appeal as a strong contest. Heronord is on an appealing mark and might well bounce back returned to hurdling, so he’s feared most ahead of stablemate Sydney Blues

While PRISON BREAK clearly comes with risks attached on the back of a string of lifeless efforts, he’s not in the minority in that respect and it could be worth taking a chance on Tim Vaughan’s charge off a mark 4lb lower than when winning this race last year. It wouldn’t be a huge surprise were Twilight Prince to step up on his low-key novice form now pitched into a handicap and he is next on the list ahead of recent C&D winner Rock The House and Cumhacht.

HAVE A RACE

IN YOUR VERY OWN NAME!!!

Did you know you could celebrate a special occasion with a race named after a friend or relative – for example

‘The John and Joan 40th Wedding Anniversary Maiden Stakes’ or ‘The John Smith 30th Birthday Handicap Stakes’.

It’s a great way to enjoy a day out with brilliant memories and you can combine it with hospitality in a private suite or a meal in the restaurant. You can come down to the Parade Ring and choose the ‘Best Turned Out’ horse and also present a prize to the winning owner before enjoying a post-race glass of bubbly. The package also includes photographs of your day and a mention in the racecard and on the big screen.
