Star Ratings Explained
Each horse has been given a star rating, these are defined below:
HHHHH Selected to win the race
HHHHI Good chance of being placed
HHHII By no means out of the reckoning but at least one or two hold stronger claims.
HHIII Unlikely to win but not totally without hope
HIIII Can be given little or no chance.
OFFICIAL BHA RATINGS EXPLAINED
The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions
A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances). The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in nonhandicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating For novice steeple chasers, the latest hurdle race rating may be shown until such time as the Handicappers allot a separate steeple chase rating Such ratings are prefixed by the letter h.

Racing Season, and we are starting in style with our Beer and Cider Festival Raceday.
May I offer a very warm welcome to you all especially all our Owners and Trainers and I sincerely hope you enjoy another successful day here at our racecourse in beautiful West Wales.
Last years flat season produced some really exciting racing with record average field sizes racing in front of bumper crowds at Ffos Las, and this year we genuinely expect it to be even better
Many thanks to our beer partners Carlsberg Marston’s plus our local breweries Gower Brewery, Mumbles Brewery and Zoo Brewery from Capel Hendre for their support in todays fixture
And then after our 7 great races please enjoy the legendary Wurzels live on stage after racing. The finest Scrumpy loving band ever to come out of the West Country will be entertaining us all with all their hits including “I’ve got a Combine Harvester”, “Blackbird” and what Beer and Cider Festival would not be complete without the anthem “I am a cider drinker”
I’m sure you will see me amongst you all singing the lyrics to all their famous hits with the rest of the race day crowd.
Don’t forget today is only the start and we have some great race days coming up over the Summer Period such as , our Free (Yes I said FREE) race night on July 31st supported by our Bookmakers, Our Ascona Race night on 16th August and of course Ladies Day on Friday 25th August with James Argent (Arg from TOWIE) and his band , The brilliant Male exotic dancers The Million Dollar Men and all hosted by the superb Jimi Webb.
Just go to ffoslas-racecourse.co.uk to book your tickets
Enjoy the day, thank you for supporting your local racecourse, and just remember you really can’t beat a great day at the races.

Evacuation Procedures
If an incident occurs which is beyond our control, it is important that you are aware of how we intend to look after you in the event of an emergency.
As part of our Safety management, we have employed professionally trained and experienced stewards and you will see them at various points throughout the racecourse. In the event of a situation, which requires partial or full evacuation of the stands or racecourse, announcements will be broadcast and stewards will undertake the responsibility of ushering you to a place of safety; it is essential that you follow their instructions. Please take your immediate belongings with you and proceed out of the area quickly and calmly with the guidance of the stewards
The evacuation procedures have been carefully planned to lead you to a safe area Should it be necessary to evacuate the course itself, there will be two main options; firstly to return to your vehicles if safe to do so and leave via the main entrance
Secondly, should it not be safe to return to your vehicles, you will be requested to leave via emergency evacuation gates, onto the racecourse itself, where you will receive further instructions.
It may give you peace of mind if you pre plan and agree a meeting place, just in case you become separated from your party. The above is precautionary only and we trust that the procedures will never be required. However, in the event of an emergency, remember;
• Take your belongings with you.
• Under the directions of the stewards, proceed quickly and calmly to the safe area.
