Star Ratings Explained
Each horse has been given a star rating, these are defined below:
HHHHH Selected to win the race
HHHHI Good chance of being placed
HHHII By no means out of the reckoning but at least one or two hold stronger claims.
HHIII Unlikely to win but not totally without hope
HIIII Can be given little or no chance.
OFFICIAL BHA RATINGS EXPLAINED
The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions
A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances). The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in nonhandicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating For novice steeple chasers, the latest hurdle race rating may be shown until such time as the Handicappers allot a separate steeple chase rating Such ratings are prefixed by the letter h.

S Br
Evening all,
I’d like to extend a warm welcome to all owners, trainers and racegoers to our second annual Prostate Cymru race night.
This amazing charity which is celebrating 20 years of supporting men in Wales does such a good job in communicating and informing men about the threat of Prostate Cancer and to make sure we get checked regularly
Gents, if you are like me, I’m not the greatest when it comes to talking about my own health to other people, so the great work this charity does becomes even more important as by doing so they are saving lives.
Can I please ask you to support them this evening, I understand that in these challenging times that every penny counts, however the money raised from tonight will go to make a positive difference, also please just pop over to the mobile unit affectionally known as the “Man Van” for a confidential chat
Also it’s a pleasure to welcome back Ragsy to perform after racing in Blinkers Bar, if you’ve never seen him live before you are really in for a treat.
Ladies Day last Friday was a tremendous success and for those who joined us I’m sure you’ll agree that despite the rain everyone enjoyed a great days racing and entertainment
Here’s a date for your diary, the National Hunt season returns soon with a bang on Sunday October 15th with our biggest jumps race day of the year, Our Gentleman’s Day incorporating our two biggest races of the year, The Welsh Champion Hurdle and Nortons Coin chase, so time to get out your tweeds and Peaky Blinders hat out to enjoy a great day at the races, and we will have the Brothers of Blues live in Blinkers Bar after racing.
Thank you again for supporting your local racecourse, and I hope you have a very enjoyable evening.
Remember, “you can beat a great day at the races, by having a good evening at the races instead!”
Kevin Hire General Manager

Evacuation Procedures
If an incident occurs which is beyond our control, it is important that you are aware of how we intend to look after you in the event of an emergency.
As part of our Safety management, we have employed professionally trained and experienced stewards and you will see them at various points throughout the racecourse. In the event of a situation, which requires partial or full evacuation of the stands or racecourse, announcements will be broadcast and stewards will undertake the responsibility of ushering you to a place of safety; it is essential that you follow their instructions. Please take your immediate belongings with you and proceed out of the area quickly and calmly with the guidance of the stewards
The evacuation procedures have been carefully planned to lead you to a safe area Should it be necessary to evacuate the course itself, there will be two main options; firstly to return to your vehicles if safe to do so and leave via the main entrance
Secondly, should it not be safe to return to your vehicles, you will be requested to leave via emergency evacuation gates, onto the racecourse itself, where you will receive further instructions.
It may give you peace of mind if you pre plan and agree a meeting place, just in case you become separated from your party. The above is precautionary only and we trust that the procedures will never be required. However, in the event of an emergency, remember;
• Take your belongings with you.
• Under the directions of the stewards, proceed quickly and calmly to the safe area.
Glasses & Bottles
Broken glasses and bottles are dangerous. In the interests of safety and the comfort of others please do not carry drinks or food on to the steppings of the stand, or the areas adjacent to the parade ring or unsaddling enclosure. It is policy at this racecourse for screens to be erected in circumstances where we have any horse, or jockey in a condition whereby treatment is being administered and a degree of privacy is deemed appropriate The use of screens does not therefore automatically infer that a fatality has occurred

Racegoers may take photographs for private purposes. Under no circumstances may photographs taken on the racecourse be used for publication without the permission of the racecourse executive Flash photography is essentially dangerous where horses are involved You are asked not to use flash photography anywhere in the parade ring area and particularly near the Winners Enclosure.

PROSTATE CYMRU
Prostate Cymru, founded in 2003 by the late Ray Murray, has grown from strength to strength over the past 20 years to become what it is today, the leading prostate health charity in Wales.
A key objective is to raise awareness of this devastating disease and to educate men of their risk and potential symptoms. With 1 in 8 men affected, increasing to 1 in 3 if there is a family history and 1 in 4 if of Afro/Caribbean descent, the work we do encouraging conversations around prostate health is more important than ever.
We are committed to expanding our awareness programme and will be undertaking a number of campaigns and activities over the coming months to reach men most at risk As part of this expansion plan, we have launched a dedicated mobile unit, with a team of medical professionals working in communities across Wales to raise awareness and give advice.
Early diagnosis saves lives, a fact that cannot be emphasised enough. If you take home one message this evening, let it be that.
We would like to thank the management here at Ffos Las Racecourse for giving us the opportunity to share our message and to The Carmarthenshire Friends of Prostate Cymru for their dedicated support and enthusiasm.
The work we do would not be possible without the many support groups, volunteers and fundraisers across Wales. Together we can ‘Save The Males in Wales’.

HAVE A RACE
IN YOUR VERY OWN NAME!!!
Did you know you could celebrate a special occasion with a race named after a friend or relative – for example
‘The John and Joan 40th Wedding Anniversary Maiden Stakes’ or ‘The John Smith 30th Birthday Handicap Stakes’.
It’s a great way to enjoy a day out with brilliant memories and you can combine it with hospitality in a private suite or a meal in the restaurant.
You can come down to the Parade Ring and choose the ‘Best Turned Out’ horse and also present a prize to the winning owner before enjoying a post-race glass of bubbly. The package also includes photographs of your day and a mention in the racecard and on the big screen.
For more details, please email General Manager Kevin Hire –khire@arenaracingcompany.co.uk
