Star Ratings Explained

Each horse has been given a star rating, these are defined below:

HHHHH Selected to win the race

HHHHI Good chance of being placed

HHHII By no means out of the reckoning but at least one or two hold stronger claims.

HHIII Unlikely to win but not totally without hope

HIIII Can be given little or no chance.

OFFICIAL BHA RATINGS EXPLAINED

The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions

A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances). The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in nonhandicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating For novice steeple chasers, the latest hurdle race rating may be shown until such time as the Handicappers allot a separate steeple chase rating Such ratings are prefixed by the letter h.

Afternoon all, welcome to the penultimate flat meeting of the season at Ffos Las Racecourse.

It’s been a superb season to date where we have enjoyed several very exciting races on the track and seen some superb winners over some challenging weather conditions over the summer. The amazing work our Grounds team have done to get us ready for racing has been outstanding, from working overnight to water the track at the end of May/start of June due to the intense heat, to the heavy rain experienced during July and August, they really have kept the track in superb condition

I’d like to wish all the Trainers and Owners all the best for today’s racing, and personally thank them for the constant support of our racetrack.

Looking forward, our next race day is on Sunday October 1st and that will be the final flat meeting of the season. Then on Sunday October 15th, we start the National Hunt season with a bang with our biggest race day of the year which features The Welsh Champion Hurdle and Norton’s Coin Chase.

This is also “Gentleman’s Day” so as well as a great days racing there will be several attractions on site including a Fun Casino, Choirs, Classic Cars, Britain’s Got Talent finalist Gruffydd Wyn singing the Welsh National Anthem before the big race, and not forgetting the Brilliant Brothers Of Blues playing in Blinkers Bar directly after racing. If you haven’t seen one of the finest Blues Brothers tribute acts yet, trust me you will be in for a treat so get ready to Shake Your Tail Feather and please make a date in your diary. Tickets are available on ffoslas-racecourse.co.uk

Please don’t forget we have the perfect way for you to celebrate the festive season with our Christmas Party Race Day, hospitality is selling very quickly so please book your tickets today to make sure you join in on the celebrations

Our fixtures are now being finalised for 2024, and I’m please to tell you that we will have a record number of fixtures throughout the year at Ffos Las, the most in its 14-year history. The race day team are very proud of this, and the fact that we continue to bring top class horseracing into the heart of West Wales. Finally, I’d just like to say thank you for supporting your local racecourse, its genuinely appreciated.

I hope you enjoy the meeting, and remember, “You really can’t beat a great day at the races!”

If an incident occurs which is beyond our control, it is important that you are aware of how we intend to look after you in the event of an emergency.

As part of our Safety management, we have employed professionally trained and experienced stewards and you will see them at various points throughout the racecourse. In the event of a situation, which requires partial or full evacuation of the stands or racecourse, announcements will be broadcast and stewards will undertake the responsibility of ushering you to a place of safety; it is essential that you follow their instructions. Please take your immediate belongings with you and proceed out of the area quickly and calmly with the guidance of the stewards

The evacuation procedures have been carefully planned to lead you to a safe area Should it be necessary to evacuate the course itself, there will be two main options; firstly to return to your vehicles if safe to do so and leave via the main entrance

Secondly, should it not be safe to return to your vehicles, you will be requested to leave via emergency evacuation gates, onto the racecourse itself, where you will receive further instructions.

It may give you peace of mind if you pre plan and agree a meeting place, just in case you become separated from your party. The above is precautionary only and we trust that the procedures will never be required. However, in the event of an emergency, remember;

• Take your belongings with you.

• Under the directions of the stewards, proceed quickly and calmly to the safe area.

Raceday preview from Weatherbys

The opening race on the card at Ffos Las is the Weatherbys Stallion Book Handicap, in which a small but select field of six go to post in this Class 5 event over 6f.

The weights are headed by the oldesthorseinthefield,seven-yearold The Cruising Lord. The Coach House gelding was once fourth as a juvenile in the Group 3 Cornwallis Stakes and rated as high as 101 as athree-year-oldwheninthehands ofMichaelAttwater.Nowwith Robyn Brisland, he is rated just 72 but is a winner over this trip this season, landing a Newbury handicap from a next time out winner back in July. He must bounce back from a modest effort latest, but will appreciateareturntogoodground.

Three-year-old Heartrate makes his first start since switching to the stable of Mark Loughnane. The Dragon Pulse gelding was with KieranCotterinIrelandandwaslast seenlandingamaidenattheeighth time of asking from a subsequent winner at Tipperary. An opening handicap mark of 68 looks more than fair and Luke Morris takes the ride.

Zoukster has excelled since entering handicap company this term.

The son of Zoustar has won three of his last five starts, proving a real progressive type for Ed Walker. A winner over this trip at Salisbury back in May, he drops back down to6fafternotappearingtostaythe milelasttimeatWindsor.

The other three-year-old in the contest is Unlimited Data for William Muir and Chris Grassick. Highly tried as a juvenile last term, he shed his maiden tag on his final start of the year and continued where he left off, winning nicely on reappearance at Wolverhampton. The Tasleet gelding has struggled sinceupintheweights, buthasnow dropped to just 2lbs above his last winningmark.

JohnFlint’sVapehasbeena regular performeratthislevelforsometime now, and landed a similar event at Chepstow back in May from this same mark. The six-year-old has struggled the last twice but each of hissix victorieshavecomewhenhis markhasdroppedintothe60s.

Fergal O’Brien’s Lord P is winless sinceanimpressivevictoryatThirsk back in August of 2021. He has now droppedbacktothatsamewinning mark, and if he can improve on his speed out of the gates, he could takeadvantagehere.

MUBHIJAH has had a few chances but the form she’s achieved when runner-up on her last 3 outings should be good enough to win a race like this and she can make a successful start for new trainer Ed Walker. A strong market move for her debuting former stablemate Marirah would make her a potential big threat. Chepstow second Naturelle should also get involved
