Star Ratings Explained

Each horse has been given a star rating, these are defined below:

HHHHH Selected to win the race

HHHHI Good chance of being placed

HHHII By no means out of the reckoning but at least one or two hold stronger claims.

HHIII Unlikely to win but not totally without hope

HIIII Can be given little or no chance.

OFFICIAL BHA RATINGS EXPLAINED

The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions

A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances). The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in nonhandicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating For novice steeple chasers, the latest hurdle race rating may be shown until such time as the Handicappers allot a separate steeple chase rating Such ratings are prefixed by the letter h.

Afternoon all, as we enter into the start of autumn, I would like to welcome you to the final flat meeting of the season this afternoon at Ffos Las Racecourse.

What a season it’s been!

We have enjoyed some very exciting races and seen a number of superb winners in challenging weather conditions over the summer Again, I must highlight the brilliant work our Grounds team have done to get us ready for racing during this time, from working overnight to water the track at the end of May / start of June due to the intense heat, to the heavy rain experienced during July, August and September, they really have kept the track in top condition

I’d really like to take this opportunity to wish all the Trainers and Owners all the best for this meeting, and personally thank them for the constant support of our racetrack.

Looking forward, our next race day is on October 15th when we start the National Hunt season with a bang with our biggest race day of the year which features both The Welsh Champion Hurdle and the Norton’s Coin Chase.

This is also “Gentleman’s Day” so as well as a great days racing there will be several attractions on site including a Fun Casino, Choirs, Classic Cars, Britain’s Got Talent finalist Gruffydd Wyn singing the Welsh National Anthem before the big race, and not forgetting the Brilliant Brothers Of Blues playing in Blinkers Bar directly after racing. If you haven’t seen one of the finest Blues Brothers tribute acts yet, trust me you will be in for a treat so get ready to “Shake Your Tail Feather” and please make a date in your diary. Tickets are available on ffoslas-racecourse.co.uk

Please don’t forget we have the perfect way for you to celebrate the festive season with our Christmas Party Race Day. Hospitality is selling very quickly so please book your tickets today to make sure you join in on the celebrations

Our fixtures are now being finalised for 2024, and should be released by the end of next week. I’m really pleased to tell you that we will have a record number of fixtures throughout the year at Ffos Las, the most in its 14-year history.

The race day team are very proud of this, and the fact that we continue to bring top class horseracing into the heart of West Wales. Finally, I’d just like to say thank you for supporting your local racecourse, it is genuinely appreciated.

I hope you enjoy the meeting, and remember, “You really can’t beat a great day at the races!”

FFOS LAS is part of Arena Racing Company which includes; Bath, Brighton, Chepstow, Doncaster, Fontwell Park, Great Yarmouth, Hereford, Lingfield Park, Newcastle, Royal Windsor, Sedgefield, Southwell, Uttoxeter, Wolverhampton and Worcester racecourses.

Evacuation Procedures

If an incident occurs which is beyond our control, it is important that you are aware of how we intend to look after you in the event of an emergency.

As part of our Safety management, we have employed professionally trained and experienced stewards and you will see them at various points throughout the racecourse. In the event of a situation, which requires partial or full evacuation of the stands or racecourse, announcements will be broadcast and stewards will undertake the responsibility of ushering you to a place of safety; it is essential that you follow their instructions. Please take your immediate belongings with you and proceed out of the area quickly and calmly with the guidance of the stewards

The evacuation procedures have been carefully planned to lead you to a safe area Should it be necessary to evacuate the course itself, there will be two main options; firstly to return to your vehicles if safe to do so and leave via the main entrance

Secondly, should it not be safe to return to your vehicles, you will be requested to leave via emergency evacuation gates, onto the racecourse itself, where you will receive further instructions.

It may give you peace of mind if you pre plan and agree a meeting place, just in case you become separated from your party. The above is precautionary only and we trust that the procedures will never be required. However, in the event of an emergency, remember;

• Take your belongings with you.

• Under the directions of the stewards, proceed quickly and calmly to the safe area.

Conor Ring’s Marathon Challenge for The Wales Air Ambulance Charity

The Wales Air Ambulance Charity is funded by donations and operates some of the most advanced air ambulances in the UK, saving precious time and lives.

They rely entirely on the charitable donations to raise £11.2 million every year which keeps the helicopters in the air and rapid response vehicles on the road across Wales. It’s proud to offer advanced critical care and is often described as a ‘Flying ED’.

The on-board consultants and critical care practitioners are highly skilled and carry pioneering medical equipment in the world. They can deliver blood transfusions, administer anaesthesia and undertake emergency operations at the scene of the incident, before flying the patient directly to specialist care.

The charity has completed over 46,000 missions and is on standby 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. They are there for the people of Wales whenever and wherever they need us.

Supporting Conor and donating to this amazing cause couldn’t be easier.

Just scan the QR code below and please donate what you can, your gift will make a positive difference to people’s lives.

Well done to Conor for taking up this challenge, and by doing so helping to keep this important service in operation.

Today, Jockey Conor Ring is taking on the challenge of running over 26 miles in the Baxters Loch Ness Marathon on behalf of a charity which is very close to all our hearts.
