Star Ratings Explained

Each horse has been given a star rating, these are defined below: HHHHH Selected to win the race. HHHHI Good chance of being placed. HHHII By no means out of the reckoning but at least one or two hold stronger claims. HHIII Unlikely to win but not totally without hope. HIIII Can be given little or no chance.

OFFICIAL BHA RATINGS EXPLAINED The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances). The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in nonhandicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating. For novice steeple chasers, the latest hurdle race rating may be shown until such time as the Handicappers allot a separate steeple chase rating. Such ratings are prefixed by the letter h.

WELCOME Welcome to Ffos Las Racecourse, on our second National Hunt meeting of the year in West Wales. For those who came to our Welsh Champion Hurdle race day in mid-October, I’m sure you will agree that we saw an amazing days racing of the highest order with Welsh Jockey Richard Patrick bringing home Nemean Lion to win the trophy for Trainer Kerry Lee in spectacular style. I have to say a big thank you to our superb grounds team who have got the track ready for racing today, despite the adverse weather conditions faced over the last two weeks. The consistency and professionalism really are a credit to the racecourse. On November 2nd I was fortunate enough to attend the Welsh Horse Racing Awards at the Vale Resort and Spa with several members of the Ffos Las team, and it was an absolute pleasure to see and hear of all the amazing successes achieved by our Welsh Jockeys and Trainers over the last 12 months. It’s a fact that we are really taking British racing by storm and made me even more proud to work in this exciting industry. I’d like to personally welcome all the Owners and Trainers to Ffos Las, wish you all good luck and I hope you thoroughly enjoy your day. Our next race meeting is on November 22nd when we will be hosting a special race day for LATCH, supporting this very important charity. I have to say a big thank you to Racehorse Owner and great friend of the racecourse Jan Johnson for being the driving force on planning and organising such a superb event, with a sold out pre-race luncheon planned. We aim to raise loads of well needed funds for this great cause, whose work has recently touched so many people’s hearts in the Welsh racing community. Also please note that from every admission ticket sold on this special race day £4 will be donated to LATCH so if we can all help support in some way, it would really be appreciated. We all know that Christmas is coming, so make a date for the diary for our Christmas Party Race Day on Thursday 21st December, it’s going to be a great day out full of festive cheer, with entertainment from choirs, comedians, and a special Christmas themed disco after racing, what a way to celebrate Christmas in style! Speaking about perfect Christmas Presents, our Annual Memberships have just been launched for 2024, and I’d like to personally thank the members for their constant support of the racecourse, the membership offers great value for money with access to all 16 of ARC’s racecourses as well as all Ffos Las’s fixtures in 2024, to find out more please check out ffoslas-racecourse.co.uk. And finally, a big thank you to you, our racegoers for supporting our racecourse, it is genuinely appreciated. Enjoy your day and just always remember that “You really can’t beat a great day at the races!”

Evacuation Procedures

If an incident occurs which is beyond our control, it is important that you are aware of how we intend to look after you in the event of an emergency. As part of our Safety management, we have employed professionally trained and experienced stewards and you will see them at various points throughout the racecourse. In the event of a situation, which requires partial or full evacuation of the stands or racecourse, announcements will be broadcast and stewards will undertake the responsibility of ushering you to a place of safety; it is essential that you follow their instructions. Please take your immediate belongings with you and proceed out of the area quickly and calmly with the guidance of the stewards. The evacuation procedures have been carefully planned to lead you to a safe area. Should it be necessary to evacuate the course itself, there will be two main options; firstly to return to your vehicles if safe to do so and leave via the main entrance. Secondly, should it not be safe to return to your vehicles, you will be requested to leave via emergency evacuation gates, onto the racecourse itself, where you will receive further instructions.

It may give you peace of mind if you pre plan and agree a meeting place, just in case you become separated from your party. The above is precautionary only and we trust that the procedures will never be required. However, in the event of an emergency, remember; • Take your belongings with you. • Under the directions of the stewards, proceed quickly and calmly to the safe area.

Glasses & Bottles Broken glasses and bottles are dangerous. In the interests of safety and the comfort of others please do not carry drinks or food on to the steppings of the stand, or the areas adjacent to the parade ring or unsaddling enclosure. Our catering team can transfer your drink into a plastic glass if you wish.

Horse & Jockey Welfare It is policy at this racecourse for screens to be erected in circumstances where we have any horse, or jockey in a condition whereby treatment is being administered and a degree of privacy is deemed appropriate. The use of screens does not therefore automatically infer that a fatality has occurred. To find out more about our Equine Welfare policy please visit our website: www.ffoslasracecourse.com.

Under no circumstances may photographs taken on the racecourse be used for publication without the permission of the racecourse executive.
