Star Ratings Explained

Each horse has been given a star rating, these are defined below:

HHHHH Selected to win the race

HHHHI Good chance of being placed

HHHII By no means out of the reckoning but at least one or two hold stronger claims

HHIII Unlikely to win but not totally without hope

HIIII Can be given little or no chance.

OFFICIAL BHA RATINGS EXPLAINED

The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions

A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances). The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in nonhandicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating For novice steeple chasers, the latest hurdle race rating may be shown until such time as the Handicappers allot a separate steeple chase rating Such ratings are prefixed by the letter h.

The last 15 years has flown at Ffos Las...
Here’s to the next fifteen years!

The late, great Rugby Legend Ray Gravell was well known for always saying that “West is Best” , and there is no greater pleasure than to celebrate Ffos Las’s 15th Birthday than by holding a special race day to mark this unique occasion

And all this happened from the exceptional vision, drive and determination of one man, Dai Walters.

But to start this story off we need to go back to well before Ffos Las was built.

The first meeting at Ffos Las was on 18 June 2009, but the idea of a new racecourse in the south west of Wales was originally mooted as long ago as 1974. No suitable land could be found, and the prospect was shelved. A number of fresh plans were drawn up in the 1990s for a course at Pembrey,

FFOS LAS ….A QUICK (AND VERY PROUD) HISTORY

only for local residents’ objections and then the Ministry of Defence to put the block on it.

In 2001 Trimsaran became a possibility When open-cast mining there stopped, Dai Walters got involved. Already a keen racehorse owner, his multi-million-pound civil engineering companies had the expertise to refashion the derelict landscape and turn it into a racecourse It took six years from getting approval by the British Horseracing Authority’s predecessor until the first race meeting. The full story can be read in Ffos Las: The Birth of a Racecourse, available from the racecourse office

The course has been a godsend for Welsh trainers and owners. Evan Williams saddled the winner of the first race here, a horse called Plunkett, and he is the top trainer at the track with 141 winners, twenty more than Peter Bowen.

In 2011 Dai Walters revived the Welsh Champion Hurdle, which was first run at the long-gone Cardiff racecourse in 1921 His own horse Oscar Whisky outclassed his opponents before going on to finish third in Cheltenham’s Champion Hurdle before winning the first of his two Grade 1 Aintree Hurdles. Altogether he won 16 of his 28 starts

In 2018 the racecourse was sold to Arena Racing And Events, to this day are proud to keep National Hunt and Flat racing alive and well in the heart of West Wales

Notable horses to have won since include The New One, the winner of 20 races, who beat the former Champion Chaser Sire De Grugy in 2017 The first Welsh-trained winner of the race was Evan Williams’ Silver Streak in 2018. The popular grey went on to come third in the Champion Hurdle, and later beat the reigning title-holder Epatante in Kempton’s Christmas Hurdle He was probably the best Welsh two-mile hurdler of the last 50 years.

Though it’s mainly known for jump racing, Ffos Las also stages flat racing in the summer – such as today, and now hosts 27 race meetings throughout the year

Its premier flat meeting, Ladies Day, has become a fixture in the south Wales social calendar. This year’s is on Friday 23 August.

The Ffos Las team would like to thank all the Owners, Trainers and Racegoers who have played a significant part in our Journey , and look forward to working with you all in the years ahead.

Remember , you really cant beat a great day at the races, especially at Ffos Las !

Conquest of Power is on a roll and deserves respect in his hat-trick bid, while King of Scotia can’t be ruled out. 1-2-3:
