• Lost and stolen badges will not be replaced Evacuation Procedures
If an incident occurs which is beyond our control, it is important that you are aware of how we intend to look after you in the event of an emergency.
As part of our Safety management, we have employed professionally trained and experienced stewards and you will see them at various points throughout the racecourse. In the event of a situation, which requires partial or full evacuation of the stands or racecourse, announcements will be broadcast and stewards will undertake the responsibility of ushering you to a place of safety; it is essential that you follow their instructions. Please take your immediate belongings with you and proceed out of the area quickly and calmly with the guidance of the stewards The evacuation procedures have been carefully planned to lead you to a safe area Should it be necessary to evacuate the course itself, there will be two main options; firstly to return to your vehicles if safe to do so and leave via the main entrance Secondly, should it not be safe to return to your vehicles, you will be requested to leave via emergency evacuation gates, onto the racecourse itself, where you will receive further instructions. It may give you peace of mind if you pre plan and agree a meeting place, just in case you become separated from your party. The above is precautionary only and we trust that the procedures will never be required. However, in the event of an emergency, remember;
• Take your belongings with you.
• Under the directions of the stewards, proceed quickly and calmly to the safe area
Glasses & Bottles
Broken glasses and bottles are dangerous. In the interests of safety and the comfort of others please do not carry drinks or food on to the steppings of the stand, or the areas adjacent to the parade ring or unsaddling enclosure. Nothing matters more to us when racing than the safety and welfare of both horse and rider. Central to that is the track itself and our groundstaff do everything in their power to provide an optimum racing surface On duty today we also have a dedicated and experienced team of highly-qualified Vets, Doctors and Paramedics following the action at every stage. Their key responsibility is to monitor and provide care to the competitors throughout their time at the racecourse The locations and vehicle movements of these skilled specialists during racing are designed to provide a rapid response to any incident across the site We also have a highspecification horse ambulance in attendance at every fixture to enable safe transport of a horse from the track to our on-site veterinary treatment facility for further treatment, or to the nearest equine referral hospital
It is our standard practice to erect screens around any horse or jockey requiring attention on the course as this provides privacy and a safe, calm environment in which to accurately diagnose and treat the patient as necessary. Please do not assume the worst if screens are erected around a horse. We are fully committed to minimizing risk in our sport, to dealing professionally and efficiently with any injury, and to maintaining the highest possible quality of care for the horses and jockeys racing here today. Star Ratings Explained
Each horse has been given a star rating, these are defined below: S Br
HHHHH Selected to win the race
HHHHI Good chance of being placed
HHHII By no means out of the reckoning but at least one or two hold stronger claims
HHIII Unlikely to win but not totally without hope
HIIII Can be given little or no chance.
OFFICIAL BHA RATINGS EXPLAINED
The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions
A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances). The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in nonhandicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating For novice steeple chasers, the latest hurdle race rating may be shown until such time as the Handicappers allot a separate steeple chase rating Such ratings are prefixed by the letter h.
THE LIFE OF THE BOOKMAKER
Who’d be a racecourse bookie?
You get rained on, blown over in a gale, occasionally yelled at by angry punters, and – like so many other industries these days –painfully squeezed around the ght margins by the corporate giants on the internet.
Sport and society is forever changing, so bookmakers also have to be mindful of compliance regulaons, ensure beng is being done safely and responsibly, and have their crystal ball handy to decide where the regulaons may be heading next.
Yet, sll they turn up – week aer week, meeng aer meeng, in all weathers, including here at Ffos Las.
Maybe there is sll some gold le to be panned, aer all.
Victor Chandler once said that a bookie should have the smile of Mother Theresa and the brain of Al Capone. And maybe the skin of a rhinoceros, too.
The old days of the c-tac men sending signals around the course may have been replaced by mobile phones, laptops, and even drones in the sky, but the bookmakers sll give racecourses a beang heart.
Without their disncve and oen local flavour, all racecourses would simply taste the same.
James and David Lovell – owners of DragonBet – grew up among the bookmaking pitches, working school holidays for their father, John.
He was something of a pioneer in Welsh bookmaking. Not only was he a shrewd markeng man who knew the value of geng Grand Naonal legend Red Rum into one of his newly-opened beng shops in Cardiff back in the 1980s, but he was also a technological innovator.
He was the first bookie in the UK to introduce laptop computers to the bookies’ armoury at the racecourse, doing away with “the book” and pen and paper calculaons and giving himself a compeve advantage
It wasn’t long before every other bookie followed suit.
Bringing a horse into a beng shop for the waing photographers would probably fall foul of the healthy and safety brigade these days, but it showed the quick wit and imaginaon that has always served bookies well. Think on your feet, even when the ground beneath them feels uncertain.
For years, Britain’s best known on-course bookie was Barry Dennis, a colourful Cockney beloved of Channel 4, who turned to him for “Barry’s Bismark” - the favourite he expected to sink without trace.
Then, there was Stephen Lile, a far posher version of Barry, who wore an ankle-length fur coat and was renowned for fearlessly laying enormous bets.
The DragonBet brothers, who now have an online as well as an on-course bookmaking operaon, are very much part of that longheld affecon for the tradions of the sport, having both learned the ropes as youngsters under the guidance of their late father
“The bookmaking tradion is always important to us,” says James. “We were raised in the beng ring and as an oncourse bookmaker you are really in the heart of the acon.
“There were always colourful characters, but there was always a code, too, and our father knew that reputaon was everything.
“Our roots are in racecourse bookmaking and that’s never going to change.
That’s where we grew up. We went to the University of Racecourses, out there with a pitch.”
So, raise glass to the on-course bookie. You’ll miss them when they’re gone.
