Evacuation
Procedures
If an incident occurs which is beyond our control, it is important that you are aware of how we intend to look after you in the event of an emergency.
As part of our Safety management, we have employed professionally trained and experienced stewards and you will see them at various points throughout the racecourse. In the event of a situation, which requires partial or full evacuation of the stands or racecourse, announcements will be broadcast and stewards will undertake the responsibility of ushering you to a place of safety; it is essential that you follow their instructions. Please take your immediate belongings with you and proceed out of the area quickly and calmly with the guidance of the stewards The evacuation procedures have been carefully planned to lead you to a safe area Should it be necessary to evacuate the course itself, there will be two main options; firstly to return to your vehicles if safe to do so and leave via the main entrance Secondly, should it not be safe to return to your vehicles, you will be requested to leave via emergency evacuation gates, onto the racecourse itself, where you will receive further instructions. It may give you peace of mind if you pre plan and agree a meeting place, just in case you become separated from your party. The above is precautionary only and we trust that the procedures will never be required. However, in the event of an emergency, remember;
• Take your belongings with you.
• Under the directions of the stewards, proceed quickly and calmly to the safe area.
Glasses & Bottles
Broken glasses and bottles are dangerous. In the interests of safety and the comfort of others please do not carry drinks or food on to the steppings of the stand, or the areas adjacent to the parade ring or unsaddling enclosure. Nothing matters more to us when racing than the safety and welfare of both horse and rider. Central to that is the track itself and our groundstaff do everything in their power to provide an optimum racing surface On duty today we also have a dedicated and experienced team of highly-qualified Vets, Doctors and Paramedics following the action at every stage. Their key responsibility is to monitor and provide care to the competitors throughout their time at the racecourse The locations and vehicle movements of these skilled specialists during racing are designed to provide a rapid response to any incident across the site We also have a highspecification horse ambulance in attendance at every fixture to enable safe transport of a horse from the track to our on-site veterinary treatment facility for further treatment, or to the nearest equine referral hospital
It is our standard practice to erect screens around any horse or jockey requiring attention on the course as this provides privacy and a safe, calm environment in which to accurately diagnose and treat the patient as necessary. Please do not assume the worst if screens are erected around a horse. We are fully committed to minimizing risk in our sport, to dealing professionally and efficiently with any injury, and to maintaining the highest possible quality of care for the horses and jockeys racing here today. Star Ratings Explained
Each horse has been given a star rating, these are defined below:
HHHHH Selected to win the race
HHHHI Good chance of being placed
HHHII By no means out of the reckoning but at least one or two hold stronger claims
HHIII Unlikely to win but not totally without hope
HIIII Can be given little or no chance.
OFFICIAL BHA RATINGS EXPLAINED
The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions
A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances). The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in nonhandicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating For novice steeple chasers, the latest hurdle race rating may be shown until such time as the Handicappers allot a separate steeple chase rating Such ratings are prefixed by the letter h.

HISTORY OF THE WELSH
This year marks the 103rd anniversary of the first Welsh Champion Hurdle. In 1921 it was a three mile handicap run at the Easter meeting of Cardiff’s racecourse in the northern suburb of Ely, with a prize of £500.
The following year “some first class horses” turned out, according to the Western Mail, though its racing coverage was almost secondary to that of its ‘Woman Correspondent’, who filled a whole column describing what the elite ladies of South Wales society were wearing. More than two columns were necessary in 1924 to report the names of prominent racegoers and the fashions, by which time to Mail had upgraded to a ‘Lady Correspondent’. The description of the actual racing was much shorter
Zarane, “probably the best hurdler in the country at the moment,” had to carry 12 stone 12 pounds in the big race, but he could not concede the weight to Kiwi, who was winning for the fourth time in a row.
Unfortunately, the economic depression and competition from the new Chepstow track in the second half of the 1920s led to the Welsh Champion Hurdle suffering a swift decline. Prize money dropped to £400 in its third year, and then £250 in 1928, which was not enough to justify the word “champion” in its title; it was renamed “the Welsh Hurdle Race”. By this time it was run over two and a quarter miles. Before long it was worth only £100 and then just £70 before disappearing from the calendar in 1935. The first post-war Welsh Grand National was run at Newport’s Caerleon course on Easter Monday 1948.
WELSH CHAMPION HURDLE
The Welsh Champion Hurdle was revived seven weeks later, at its two-day Whitsun meeting, with a handsome £750 of prize money. Sadly, it was the briefest of comebacks, as that was the last ever Newport fixture. The Welsh National moved the following year to Chepstow, where the premier contest over the sticks was worth only £400 and called the Welsh Grand Annual Handicap Hurdle.
John Hughes was a much-admired clerk of the course who in the late 1960s was determined to put Chepstow on the map. He succeeded in bringing in sponsors, thereby attracting regular TV coverage of its National Hunt meetings on Saturdays. One of his ploys was the resurrection of the Welsh Champion Hurdle. He realised there were few suitable races for top class hurdlers after they had run at the Cheltenham Festival.
The triple Champion Hurdler Persian War won the inaugural contest in 1969, and a series of other great horses took the race in the next ten years – Bula, Comedy Of Errors (twice), Lanzarote, Night Nurse (twice), Monksfield and Sea Pigeon. The standard slipped a little in the 1980s and by the 1990s it was generally a race for above average handicappers, though mention must be made of the Martin Pipe-trained Potentate. His nine course victories included three in this race from 1997-99. After the 2002 running the fixture list was revised, Chepstow lost its Easter meeting and the Welsh Champion Hurdle disappeared from the programme again.
The creation of the new course at Ffos Las sparked the fourth revival of the race in 2011. After some experimentation regarding its conditions, distance, and time of year it has settled in its current mid-October slot as a two mile handicap with a restricted weight range. Top class winners include Oscar Whisky, The New One and the Welsh-trained Silver Streak. The 2020 winner Sceau Royal has 16 career victories to his name.
Last year’s winner Numean Lion rode a great race to win last year with Richard Partick in the saddle and trained by Kerry Lee but who will pick up the famous trophy this year? We shall find out this afternoon!

Sam Thomas holds a strong hand, with LUMP SUM and Steel Ally appealing as types who can kick on again in handicaps on the back of promising novice hurdle campaigns last season. The former gets the vote with Dylan Johnston taking 5lb off but it will be very interesting to see how the betting splits them. Imperial Cup winner Go Dante merits respect, while Jipcot would also enter the reckoning if showing up after/instead of Chepstow on Saturday.
