OFFICIAL BHA RATINGS EXPLAINED
The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability
The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances).
The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating.

WEATHERBYS HAMILTON NOVICES’ HURDLE
This evening’s card gets underway with the extended 2m1f Weatherbys Hamilton Novices’ Hurdle, in which seven horses go to post, including recent course-and-distance winner Somespring Special.
Anthony Honeyball’s five-year-old won a mares’ novices’ handicap at the early-April fixture, making all of the running under Ben Godfrey. That win came off a mark of just 105 and having subsequently been upped 6lbs by the handicapper, the daughter of Westerner is an obvious contender
The other previous winner in the field is Milton Harris’ filly, Komedy Kicks, who is again partnered by Harry Cobden. He was aboard the four-year-old when she won a maiden at Worcester earlier this month, where she ran around a little up the straight but showed a good attitude to prevail by a head. Rated 114, she sets the standard and although she is penalised, still receives weights from her older rivals.
The opposition doesn’t look overly strong, although Stiletto shaped with promise on his hurdling debut at Chepstow last month and the winner has run well in handicap company since. That strict form line would leave him with a little to find with the aforementioned duo, but he is open to plenty of improvement after just the one start under this code.
Weatherbys also sponsor race five, the Weatherbys Digital Solutions
Mares’ Novices’ Handicap Hurdle, in which eight take their chance over an extended 2m5f
Dorset-based trainer Anthony Honeyball, who boasts a magnificent 32% strike rate (67-212) at the track, looks to have another good chance with Pure Theatre who won a maiden at Exeter in comfortable fashion last month. Unable to carry a penalty to success at Hexham last weekend, she ran well and should appreciate entering handicap company from an opening mark of 105.
Having refused to race at Warwick earlier in the month, top-weight Energy One wears first-time blinkers and is just 4lbs higher than when successful at Ludlow in early-March.
David Pipe’s Micronormous and the Neil Mulholland-trained Midnight Gold both wear first-time cheek-pieces and the former should appreciate reverting to a sounder surface, following her run on heavy ground at Ffos Las 57 days ago. She won a good ground bumper at Exeter last November and this is her second start since undergoing wind surgery. Newly-appointed stable jockey Jack Tudor, who enjoyed a fine end to last season courtesy of the Scottish Grand National/bet365 Gold Cup double of Kitty’s Light, retains the partnership.
Recent Fakenham winner Baby Sham carries a 7lbs penalty, but given that she only went up 3lbs for that victory, she isn’t exactly well treated at the weights, whilst the other trio are all running from out of the handicap Tuscan Rose, a stable-mate of Midnight Gold, is 3lbs ‘wrong’ whilst Happy Returns and Can You See Her race from 6lbs and 7lbs, respectively, out of the handicap.

PARADE RING
All horses must parade in the Parade Ring except by permission of the Stewards, but in all cases must pass through the Ring on the way to the Post.
COMMITMENT TO HORSE WELFARE
We are committed to minimising risks, dealing quickly and humanely with injuries and maintaining the highest level of care. At every meeting there are three specially qualified Equine vets appointed to look after the welfare of all horses in action
A British Horseracing Authority Veterinary Officer is also in attendance working closely with the racecourse veterinary team. This is to ensure that any injury to a horse is recorded, so that it can be monitored when it returns to racing.
It is now a standard practice for screens to be erected around any horse receiving veterinary attention on the course. This does not reflect the severity of an injury, but allows the vet some privacy in which to administer treatment and provides the horse with a calmer environment Please do not assume the worst if you see screens erected around a fallen horse.
To find out more about our Equine Welfare policy, please visit our website: www.fontwellpark.co.uk

LONGEST TRAVELLER: WATERGRANGE JACK trained by N Mulholland, Limpley Stoke, 96 miles.
It could be worth siding with former C&D winner SMALL BAD BOB who arrives on the back of success over fences at Plumpton 4 days ago and has plenty of handicapping scope judged on his old form over hurdles. In The Air, who ran well himself when second at Taunton in March rates the chief threat.
