OFFICIAL BHA RATINGS EXPLAINED
The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability
The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances).
The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating.
You may be asked to provide proof of your age when placing a bet

Will Lefebve’s
Forage through Fontwell Park history 23 facts and figures, in semi-chronological order
1. The first ever raceday at Fontwell Park took place on May 21, 1924. 69 runners and riders lined up for six races from 2.30 to 4.30. The most valuable race of the meeting was the RICHMOND HANDICAP HURDLE with £150 total prize money
2. FRED FITTON (born 1893) was the only jockey to complete a double at that opening two-day meeting, scoring on DOUBLE DAHLIA (Bognor Handicap Hurdle) and SOUTHPORT (Eastergate Selling Hurdle).
3. Post-race meeting trains from nearby Barnham back to London Victoria called at Horsham, Three Bridges, Redhill, East Croydon, Dorking North & Sutton, but it was hard luck if you wanted to alight at Arundel.
4. Hard ground resulted in two walkovers one day in the 1926/27 season, and one meeting was abandoned owing to the effect of industrial action.
5. The legendary jockey BILLY SPECK landed a hat-trick one day in the 1931/32 season.
6. Probably the most curiously-named jockey to win a race at Fontwell Park was VICTOR KNEWSTUB in the 37/38 season.
7. “TOWSER” GOSDEN, father of Newmarket’s legendary trainer JOHN HARRY MARTIN, saddled 3 winners one afternoon during the 1938/39 season.
8. During one 1940 afternoon, 127 runners went to post, and a 2-day affair in March 1955 attracted a total of 222 horses (24 in one race).
9. No racing took place between 1941 and 1944 because of World War II.
10. FULKE WALWYN, before he became the Royal trainer, landed a 4-timer on the day racing resumed after World War II.
11. CAPTAIN RYAN PRICE of Grand National, Cheltenham Gold Cup, Champion Hurdle, “Schweppes”, and Flat racing Classic fame, then based at Lavant, saddled BORA’S COTTAGE to win a low-grade steeplechase on September 20th, 1948.
12. Future Grand National heroine NICKEL COIN “cashed in” with victory in the £239 Norfolk Challenge Cup Chase for Reigate handler Jack O’Donoghue on 6th April 1949.
13. MONAVEEN (100-30 ON) provided what is believed to be the only winner jointly owned by then Princess Elizabeth and her mother, then the QUEEN, when landing the 3-runner CHICHESTER HANDICAP CHASE on Monday, October 14th, 1949.
14. A horse called EASY WINNER (6-4 fav) was anything but when landing the HAVANT SELLING CHASE on Boxing Day 1957, scraping home by a head.
15. Notice in race card (price: one shilling) of October 19th, 1963 read: The HBLB will contribute £2,725 for the reduction of Owners’ entrance fees to races for the period August to December 1963. J. P. McMANUS would NOT have benefited - he was 12 years old at the time!
16. WELL TO DO, partnered by reigning champion jockey GRAHAM THORNER, was successful during the 1970/71 campaign on his way to racing immortality, with his victory in the following season’s Grand National.
17. ALY BRANFORD rode 9 winners for the QUEEN MOTHER, including one on GREYSTOKE PILLAR (April 22, 1974) in the FLANSHAM NOVICES’ CHASE here at Fontwell.
18. Two Bank Holiday fixtures in May, 1974 produced a double for racehorse ELGAR, trained by PETER ASHWORTH. He was no “Enigma”, and little “Pomp & Circumstance” surrounded the occasions!
19. Same day hat-tricks came in February, 1999 for trainer VENETIA WILLIAMS (still going strong today) and jockey NORMAN WILLIAMSON.
20. Current Clerk of the Course PHILIP HIDE enjoyed spring 1999 successes aboard KYBO’S REVENGE (Richard Rowe), PAGASONIC (Gary Moore) & SMINT (Josh Gifford).
21. A horse called ELVIS was triumphant on New Year’s Eve 1999 - were the punters “All Shook Up”; did they have “Suspicious Minds” about the outcome; they might have thought: “Don’t Be Cruel” [To the Bookies]; and the layers could’ve remarked: “Alright, Okay, You Win”!
22. In the spring of 2010, CUE CARD romped home here on his racecourse debut en route to taking the Champion Bumper at the Cheltenham Festival.
23. The winner of the final pre-centenary race to be held at Fontwell Park was AL SAYAH (8th May 2024) ridden by BRYAN CARVER for trainer NEIL MULHOLLAND.

HORSE AND JOCKEY WELFARE AT FONTWELL PARK
Nothing matters more to us when racing than the safety and welfare of both horse and rider. Central to that is the track itself and our groundstaff do everything in their power to provide an optimum racing surface On duty today we also have a dedicated and experienced team of highly-qualified Vets, Doctors and Paramedics following the action at every stage. Their key responsibility is to monitor and provide care to the competitors throughout their time at the racecourse The locations and vehicle movements of these skilled specialists during racing are designed to provide a rapid response to any incident across the site We also have a high-specification horse ambulance in attendance at every fixture to enable safe transport of a horse from the track to our on-site veterinary treatment facility for further treatment, or to the nearest equine referral hospital It is our standard practice to erect screens around any horse or jockey requiring attention on the course as this provides privacy and a safe, calm environment in which to accurately diagnose and treat the patient as necessary. Please do not assume the worst if screens are erected around a horse. We are fully committed to minimizing risk in our sport, to dealing professionally and efficiently with any injury, and to maintaining the highest possible quality of care for the horses and jockeys racing here today. To find out more about our Equine Welfare policy, please visit our website www.fontwellpark.co.uk
