WELCOME TO HEREFORD RACECOURSE
Welcome to Hereford Racecourse. The unseasonably dry winter, so far, is impacting jump racing with trainers not able to use their grass gallops to full extent, racecourses irrigating tracks when the watering machines have usually long been put away for the winter and smaller field sizes with fewer horses looking for quicker ground at this time of year. “Hold your nerve” is a message we have heard lots recently, in terms of when the rain comes it will likely be in biblical proportions and the ground will then turn to the opposite end of the scale. I cannot recall a winter here yet where groundstaff have had to water late into November and really hope that after today’s fixture we see a change in weather and that significant rainfall arrives. Jump racing needs it at this point in the season. We extend a warm welcome today to Mark Ware from Royal Equestrian Bedding, sponsor of the Frequent Runner Series here and at Worcester Racecourse. We hope the leading trainers from Worcester’s summer season enjoy their hospitality today. Our next fixture is the Christmas Jumper Raceday on Saturday 11th December when we look forward to welcoming a large crowd for one of our best day’s racing of the year with the feature racing being the £32,500 Mares’ Chase Final. The newly formed Hereford Racehorse Ownership Club hopes to be running the Venetia Williams trained Poniente on the day and if you would like to become a racehorse owner in an affordable way then look no further – membership costs just £299 and includes 2022 ARC Membership to 500+ fixtures. Finally, look out today for Racing to School, which is a brilliant educational charity that inspires children to learn more about racing within the National Curriculum. We are pleased that 60 local pupils are with us today. Enjoy the racing.

Star Ratings Explained Each horse has been given a star rating, these are defined below: Selected to win the race. Good chance of being placed. By no means out of the reckoning but at least one or two hold stronger claims
hope.
Unlikely to win but not totally without Can be given little or no chance.
OFFICIAL BHA RATINGS EXPLAINED The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances). The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in nonhandicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating. for novice steeple chasers, the latest hurdle race rating may be shown until such time as the Handicappers allot a separate steeple chase rating. Such ratings are prefixed by the letter h.
