WELCOME TO HEREFORD RACECOURSE
Welcome back to Hereford Racecourse for our Season Opener, kindly sponsored by Vickers Bet. It barely feels like we closed the gates in April and are back again! But we have lots to look forward to over the 2023/2024 season, including Residents Raceday on Tuesday 21st November which offers those with an ‘HR’ postcode 2 for 1 on general admission tickets. We have our ever-popular Christmas Jumper and Ladies Days, and the season will conclude in April with a new Countryside Raceday on Sunday 14th April. Our fixture list is displayed in your racecard so be sure to get these dates in your diary. Throughout the season we have our Day at the Races packages available which offer great value, but these do sell out fast so would encourage you to get booked in via the website for your desired fixture. As well as our Snaffles restaurant opening on feature days, we also offer Premier Viewing in this facility for all fixtures in between, which makes the perfect base for the day, again all available via the website www.hereford-racecourse.co.uk. With attention turning back to today’s action, I would like to take the opportunity to wish all Owners, Trainers, Jockeys and Stable Staff the best of luck with their runners at Hereford and beyond as we see the jumps season getting back into full swing. Today we also remember a dear member of the raceday stewarding team, Bill Chapman, and we welcome his wife Kay, family and friends here to enjoy the 5th race in his name. We hope they have a memorable day with us. We hope you have a great day with us and remember we do it all again next Tuesday! Best wishes,
Camilla Esling General Manager

Star Ratings Explained Each horse has been given a star rating, these are defined below: Selected to win the race. Good chance of being placed. By no means out of the reckoning but at least one or two hold stronger claims
hope.
Unlikely to win but not totally without Can be given little or no chance.
OFFICIAL BHA RATINGS EXPLAINED The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances). The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in nonhandicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating. for novice steeple chasers, the latest hurdle race rating may be shown until such time as the Handicappers allot a separate steeple chase rating. Such ratings are prefixed by the letter h.

The Bill Chapman Memorial Handicap Chase
We remember today our dear friend and colleague, Bill Chapman. We also welcome his wife Kay, family and friends who are here today. Bill was a real gentleman, he loved his racing and was never happier when on a racecourse, whether that was for pleasure or working as a dedicated and hugely respected steward. Bill’s other loves were his dogs...and Barcelona FC...! The team of raceday staff and permanent staff alike miss Bill dearly, and we hope his family and friends have a memorable day with us today.

The one who appeals most is FAMILY POT, who made a winning reappearance last season on the back of a similar period of absence and is just 2lb above the mark off which he gained the second of his two victories here in February.
