WELCOME TO HEREFORD RACECOURSE
Welcome to Hereford Racecourse for this our second meeting of the 2023/2024 jumps season, sponsored by Vickers Bet and Weatherbys. Our Season Opener last Tuesday was full of action and celebration, including a winner for Mike Harris, a loyal supporter of Hereford, who had been trying to get a Hereford winner for over 15 years and last week Fenney Brook delivered for his racing club, trained by Katy Price and piloted by Gavin Sheehan. Mike and his wife Deb also had their wedding reception here in 2018 on a raceday which was fabulously unique, so we were thrilled when they were able to celebrate again with us last week. With racehorse ownership in mind, now is the perfect time to join our own Hereford Racehorse Ownership Club. The annual membership includes a share in the Venetia Williams’ trained horse Paseo, who starts his campaign in mid-November. The membership also includes an annual ARC membership meaning you can have access to not only Hereford, but all of our courses in the group, including Chepstow, Bath, Uttoxeter, Worcester and Doncaster. It really presents fantastic value for money at £299 and is also a great stepping stone into racehorse ownership! Visit our website for more information or to join up right away. We hope you enjoy your day with us, we next race on Monday 6th November when we will welcome the Hereford Poppy Appeal so please do show your support to them and their fantastic cause. Best wishes,
Camilla Esling General Manager

Star Ratings Explained Each horse has been given a star rating, these are defined below: Selected to win the race. Good chance of being placed. By no means out of the reckoning but at least one or two hold stronger claims
hope.
Unlikely to win but not totally without Can be given little or no chance.
OFFICIAL BHA RATINGS EXPLAINED The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances). The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in nonhandicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating. for novice steeple chasers, the latest hurdle race rating may be shown until such time as the Handicappers allot a separate steeple chase rating. Such ratings are prefixed by the letter h.

PAUL FERGUSON’S
Raceday preview from Weatherbys Four runners go to post for the Paul Ferguson’s Jumpers To Follow Junior “National Hunt” Hurdle, and there are some interesting profiles amongst these three-year-olds.
Billytherealbigred made his debut under rules in a similar event at Stratford, finishing second . Billytherealbigred made his debut under rules in a similar event at Stratford, finishing second for Evan Williams. Travelling well through the contest on the front end, he was no match for the eventual winner who powered clear at the last, but it was a performance that offered plenty of encouragement. He did have a tendency to jump out to his left on occasions though, and this could cause jockey Adam Wedge some problems on a sharp right-handed track like Hereford. His dam was winless over obstacles but is a half-sister to some smart performers in the form of Tagrita and Storm Control. Summer Night City was well beaten into third in behind that day and has almost 60 lengths to make up on Evan Williams’ three-year-old. The writing was on the wall along way from home that day, and the son of Yorgunnabelucky was struggling to go the gallop rather early in the contest. He was given an easy time of it by the jockey once the front pair had gone clear though, keeping the future in mind WEATHERBYS RACEDAY PREVIEW
for the young horse. He was extremely well-supported in the market that day though, so the yard clearly think highly of him and he shouldn’t be discounted here. His only full sibling to jump a hurdle is Lady Reset, a David Pipe mare who has won four times over hurdles with a peak rating of 112. The other two who make up the line-up are both making their debut under rules. Great Valley is likely to be popular in the market for a Skelton team that have a good record with their younger horses. The three-yearold is by Masterstroke, the sire of the yard’s Pikar, an impressive novice hurdler for the stable last term, and he has sired plenty of precocious national hunt types over in France. The dam was unraced but has foaled two individual winners from six runners, including a French Listed winner. The other unraced horse in the field is the sole filly in the line-up, Francina. By German Derby winner Sea The Moon, the sire has proven to produce some top level national hunt juveniles including the likes of Grade 1 winner Allmankind and Grade 2 winner Tritonic. The dam has produced two stakeslevel performers on the flat, whilst all three runners over jumps have been winners. The best of those is no doubt Favorite Moon, a full brother to Francina who is a Group 3 winner on the flat and has won two of his first three starts over hurdles for William Durkan.

There should be plenty more to come from MONTREGARD, who landed the odds in a Warwick maiden during the spring and is likely to relish this stiffer test now moving into handicap company. State of Honor was all set to make a successful handicap debut over C&D when last seen 8 months ago and will be a threat if none the worse for that tumble. Mactavish is third choice ahead of My Gift To You.
