Welcome to Hereford Racecourse for our inaugural Richard Layton Charity Raceday. We are delighted to welcome the organisers of this raceday and all their supporters for what promises to be a fantastic afternoon for all involved raising vital funds for their chosen charities. All fundraising proceeds from today will be shared between We Are Farming Minds, The Injured Jockey’s Fund and The Midlands Air Ambulance.
We thank today’s race sponsors including Brightwells Ltd, Wye Valley Group, The Layton Family, Alpha Aggregates, HCD Ltd, Keltruck Scania and Sigeric Property, who through their race sponsorship have supported the charities today. They will also be welcoming guests into hospitality together with other local businesses, plus friends and family of the organisers, all of whom have been so generous in their support thus far
Tragically, Richard Layton, who ran Dewdales Hope Farm in Bodenham, took his own life last year following a lengthy mental health battle His family are determined to raise awareness and support those in the local Herefordshire farming community who may similarly be suffering from anxiety, loneliness and depression. Combining the organiser’s farming and racing backgrounds, their aim is to‘Make Mental Health the Front Runner’and we do hope you will show them your support today, by just being here means so much to them.
We hope you enjoy your day with us today and best of luck to all connections with runners We next race here on Wednesday 11th December followed by Saturday 21st December, Christmas Jumper Day, where we hope you can return to enjoy racing with us before the end of 2024!
Best wishes,
Camilla Esling General Manager
CHARITY RACEDAY
SUPPORTING:
• WE ARE FARMING MINDS
• MIDLANDS AIR AMBULANCE
• INJURED JOCKEYS FUND
NO fewer than SEVEN Herefordshire farmers took their own lives in 2023 alone.
This terrifying statistic underlines the fact that there is a mental health crisis in the agricultural community, and it is right on our doorstep. Because the NHS is overwhelmed, charities are forced to fill the breach as best they can.
Tragically, Richard Layton (pictured), who ran Dewdales Hope Farm in Bodenham, near Leominster, was one of those farmers
He was just 53 when he took his own life in March last year, following a lengthy mental health battle
His wife Marie-Louise, son George and daughter Lily are determined to raise awareness and support those in the local Herefordshire farming community who may similarly be suffering from anxiety, loneliness and depression
Marie-Louise’s cousins and Wye Valley Group founders, Sue and Andrew Howell, also suffered a similar tragedy Their elder brother, Robert, was just 27 when he took his own life.
This is personal for the two families and their friends. They are all determined to make a difference, trying to ensure lives are saved.
Along with Press Box Publishing founder Simon Milham, they have come together to form ‘Charity Racedays’, and are hosting a spectacular event today, trying to raise as much money as possible for three deserving charities – We Are Farming Minds, Midlands Air Ambulance and the Injured Jockeys Fund – with all monies raised split equally between the three.
The organisers are hugely indebted to all those people and companies who have helped make this happen. Thank you one and all, from the bottom of our hearts.
Sincerely,
Marie-Louise Layton, George Layton, Lily Layton, Sue Howell, Andrew Howell & Simon Milham

HORSE AND JOCKEY WELFARE AT HEREFORD
Nothing matters more to us when racing than the safety and welfare of both horse and rider. Central to that is the track itself and our groundstaff do everything in their power to provide an optimum racing surface. On duty today we also have a dedicated and experienced team of highly-qualified Vets, Doctors and Paramedics following the action at every stage Their key responsibility is to monitor and provide care to the competitors throughout their time at the racecourse. Please do not assume the worst if screens are erected around a horse We are fully committed to minimizing risk in our sport, to dealing professionally and efficiently with any injury, and to maintaining the highest possible quality of care for the horses and jockeys racing here today. Star Ratings Explained
Selected to win the race
Good chance of being placed By no means out of the reckoning but at least one or two hold stronger claims
Unlikely to win but not totally without hope
Can be given little or no chance.
The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions
A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances). The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in nonhandicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating for novice steeple chasers, the latest hurdle race rating may be shown until such time as the Handicappers allot a separate steeple chase rating Such ratings are prefixed by the letter h.
