Star Ratings

Explained

Each horse has been given a star rating, these are defined below:

HHHHH Selected to win the race.

HHHHI Good chance of being placed

HHHII By no means out of the reckoning but at least one or two hold stronger

claims

HHIII Unlikely to win but not totally without hope

HIIII Can be given little or no chance

OFFICIAL BHA RATINGS EXPLAINED

The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability

The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances).

The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating

WHERE TO BET

There are a variety of places to bet at the course; The Tote has selling points throughout the racecourse - easily identified by the Tote Betting or totepool signs

The bookmakers are located in front of the grandstand in the ‘Betting Ring’. The bookmakers display their odds for each race and compete to offer the best price to customers. These are fixed price bets and the amount of your winnings will be printed on your betting slip. Search around to get the best price for your selection.

Mimimum Stakes

The Tote has a minimum bet of £2. The bookmakers vary but if they have a minimum it will be shown on the boards displaying their odds. If in doubt – just ask.

ANISOPTERA could do with cutting out the tardy starts but she’s a C&D winner in excellent heart and, now up just 1lb for a narrow defeat at Kempton, she looks the answer Yorkindness was better than ever when landing a small-field contest at Pontefract a week ago and she’s the obvious danger under a penalty.

QUIET AFFAIR shaped with definite promise when third on debut in a Kempton novice (6f) 26 days ago and with progress anticipated she could be worth siding with to come out on top. David Menuisier saddled an impressive winning newcomer at Sandown last week and his representative Xaarine is of interest on debut. Latama, who wasn’t seen to best effect on debut atThirsk, is also respected, withThisTime Maybe another newcomer to note.

RACE STATS RACE SUMMARY

The drop to this trip was the catalyst for an improved display from ALPINE GIRL, who quickened up nicely in the closing stages when scoring over C&D last time She’s gone up 5lb but is totally unexposed at the minimum trip/on the all-weather and is taken to strike again. Skallywag Bay got back on track when going close in a 6fWindsor handicap and, like Alpine Girl, could benefit from this drop to 5f. She is second choice, albeit only marginally as Cuban Grey is also appealing.
