Horses can be attended to in the same time as the Paramedic Teams responsible for treating injured jockeys. The second vet follows the action from the stands and coordinates the required response to any incidents In addition, throughout the meeting a close check is kept on all horses, especially those returning after a race It is standard policy that in the event of a horse requiring veterinary treatment whilst on site, screens will be erected around the horse. Star Ratings

Explained

Each horse has been given a star rating, these are defined below:

HHHHH Selected to win the race.

HHHHI Good chance of being placed

HHHII By no means out of the reckoning but at least one or two hold stronger

claims

HHIII Unlikely to win but not totally without hope

HIIII Can be given little or no chance

OFFICIAL BHA RATINGS EXPLAINED

The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability

The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances).

The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating

WHERE TO BET

There are a variety of places to bet at the course; The Tote has selling points throughout the racecourse - easily identified by the Tote Betting or totepool signs

The bookmakers are located in front of the grandstand in the ‘Betting Ring’. The bookmakers display their odds for each race and compete to offer the best price to customers. These are fixed price bets and the amount of your winnings will be printed on your betting slip. Search around to get the best price for your selection.

Minimum Stakes

The Tote has a minimum bet of £2. The bookmakers vary but if they have a minimum it will be shown on the boards displaying their odds. If in doubt – just ask.

Today marks the 20th anniversary of the Samson Centre for MS’s association with Lingfield Park. Back in the summer of 2003, our fledgling charity was kindly given permission by the course’s management team to hold an after race bucket collection. Over the years this became an annual summer ‘event’, raising huge amounts for the charity through the generosity of Lingfield’s racegoers whilst at the same time giving our volunteers and members many memorable and enjoyable evenings.

So much so, that in 2005 the first Samson Centre Owners Group charitable racing syndicate was formed to support and promote the charity’s work. Some of you may remember our first horse, Samson Quest, trained by Andrew Balding, followed by Miss Bounty, trained by Jim Boyle, which ran regularly at Lingfield and Epsom. Both horses raised substantial sums of money for the charity as well as creating awareness of the organisation’s aims and objectives. Even now, the Samson Centre still receives donations from individuals and charitable trusts who were originally associated with the charitable racing syndicate initiative.

Based in Guildford, the Samson Centre provides essential services, not available through the NHS and without government funding, that help our memberslivethebestlifethey can with multiple sclerosis.

The Centre has over 250 users of all ages and, annually, provides over 10,000 treatments through specialist physiotherapy sessions, exercise classes, bespoke programmes in our state of the art gymnasium as well as hyperbaric oxygen therapy.

Beyond the practical support we provide, the Samson Centre also plays an important social role as a place where people with MS and their carers can meet, spend time and support each other. Those who join the Centre are part of a friendly and welcoming community.

So a huge thank you to Lingfield Parkforinvitingus back this evening to celebrate our association with the course with a race named after the charity and for

also giving our founding Trustee, John Hambly and his family, the thrilling opportunity to judge the best turned out horse and present the trophy to the winning owner. ForthosewishingtoknowmoreabouttheSamsonCentre for MS please refer to our website samsoncentre.org.uk

Or, for those of you who like a good read, John’s autobiography, Samson Rising, with many humorous sporting anecdotes and the story of the charity’s evolution, is available from United Writers Cornwall, RRP £18.95.
