WELCOME & MEET THE TEAM
WELCOME We are delighted to welcome you to the conclusion of the 2024 Winter Million Festival, with today’s Jumps fixture being the first of ARC’s Premier Racing fixtures taking place this year. There will be plenty of action both on and off the track this afternoon, with seven Jumps races and one Flat race to enjoy. The two features of the card are the Fitzdares Fleur de Lys Chase and the Grade 2 Download the Racing App Now Lightning Novices’ Chase, which both have a strong book of runners going to post. The Fitzdares Fleur de Lys Chase at 3pm is set to be a cracking race. Worth £165,000 in prize money, the race will see the return of Grade 1 winner L’Homme Presse, who has been off the track after sustaining an injury and will take on Dan Skelton’s stable star Protektorat alongside four other contenders. You can also enjoy quality Graded action this afternoon with the Download The Racing App Now Lightning Novices’ Steeple Chase at 1:15pm, a Grade 2 race worth £75,000 and run over two miles. Off the track, we hope you take advantage of all the entertainment on offer throughout the afternoon. On arrival and throughout the day, you can enjoy live roaming music from Fully Funktional. Looking for a tasty tipple? Why not tickle your tastebuds with our exclusive Winter Million cocktail ‘A Gin a Million’ which you can find served in the Courtyard. If you here with your family, please head to the Hotel Lawn where you will find funfair rides and pony rides for the kids, all complimentary. Our thanks must go to the connections of all of this afternoon’s runners including the owners, trainers and racing staff for supporting the Winter Million Festival. Equally, to our sponsors this afternoon, Fitzdares and Weatherbys, and to our broadcasters Sky Sports Racing and ITV. From all of the team at Lingfield Park, we would like to wish you the best for this afternoon, and we hope you have enjoyed 2024’s Winter Million Festival. Our next feature raceday, and most popular in our calendar is the All-Weather Championships Vase Day on Good Friday, we hope to see you there!

Star Ratings Explained
Each horse has been given a star rating, these are defined below: HHHHH Selected to win the race. claims HHHHI Good chance of being placed. HHIII Unlikely to win but not totally without hope. HHHII By no means out of the reckoning but HIIII Can be given little or no chance. at least one or two hold stronger
OFFICIAL BHA RATINGS EXPLAINED The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances). The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating.
WHERE TO BET There are a variety of places to bet at the course; The Tote has selling points throughout the racecourse - easily identified by the Tote Betting or totepool signs. The bookmakers are located in front of the grandstand in the ‘Betting Ring’. The bookmakers display their odds for each race and compete to offer the best price to customers. These are fixed price bets and the amount of your winnings will be printed on your betting slip. Search around to get the best price for your selection. Minimum Stakes The Tote has a minimum bet of £2. The bookmakers vary but if they have a minimum it will be shown on the boards displaying their odds. If in doubt – just ask.
i HEADGEAR EXPLAINED Have you ever wondered why some horses wear headgear? Is it just a fashion accessory? Most definitely not. Headgear is a useful tool in the armoury of a trainer and is used to aid a horse’s performance on the track.
Blinkers The hustle and bustle of a racecourse can be exciting for a racehorse and so Blinkers can be used to aid concentration. A half cup placed behind the horses eye helps them to keep looking forwards to focus on the job at hand - winning their race!
Visors Very similar to blinkers but with a slit cut in the side of the cup. If you look at the two pictures in the examples you can just make out the difference. This slit enables a horse to see the other runners around them but still keeps the focus forwards.
Cheekpieces Sheepskin Cheekpieces work on a similar principle to Blinkers and Visors but allow a slightly better range of vision. Horses who struggle to perform to their best because they are too keen in their races are often prime candidates for cheekpieces.
Eye Shields Eye Shields are a fine mesh that covers the entire eye but they do allow full vision. Often worn at all-weather tracks where the kick-back can fly into the horses faces, the purpose of them is to prevent anything going into the horses eyes.
Hood Covering the ears and head, a hood is used for horses that are easily spooked by crowds or noises, rather than for concentration purposes. Padding around the ears restricts noise and helps to calm a nervous horse. Eye holes allow a full range of vision.
Noseband Some horses can carry their head awkwardly high which prevents them performing at their best. A noseband is designed to restrict the field of vision and encourage a horse to focus on the race, usually lowering their head in the process.
Tongue Strap Horses do not breathe through their mouth but even so, it can hamper speed and performance to have their mouth open or tongue flopping out. A tongue strap prevents this by keeping the tongue in place for the duration of the race. You can just see it in the picture.

PREMIER PREVIEW The Sunday of the Winter Millions Festival here at Lingfield looks set to be a fantastic afternoon of racing, with some real top-class action, and Weatherbys sponsor two races across the card. The Weatherbys Digital Solutions Mares’ Novices’ Hurdle looks a real competitive contest, but Pawapuri sets the standard on her Listed success at Haydock when last seen. She struggled as a juvenile, a little out of her depth in in her first two starts over timber but returned with a much-improved display to run out a comfortable seventh-length winner on seasonal debut in November. The five-year-old daughter of Golden Horn took her form up a notch when much too strong for a decent field at Haydock last time, taking Listed honours with an impressive display despite a mistake at the final flight, making her the one to beat. Gavin Cromwell has enjoyed great success in the UK this term, with eight winners from 32 runners this season, and Only By Night has won all three of her starts for the trainer. The six-year-old landed a brace of bumpers, before impressing with a ten-length success on hurdles debut at Naas. A strong travelling type, she looks to have plenty of scope for improvement and could develop into a real smart prospect. Later on in the afternoon, the Weatherbys Hamilton Handicap Hurdle looks an intriguing contest. The weights are headed by Nicky
Gowel Road ridden by Sam Twiston-Davies. Winner of The 2022 Ascot Underwriting Novices’ Limited Handicap Chase (GBB Race) (Class 3)
Henderson’s Bold Endeavour who ran a great race when fifth in the Betfair “Serial Winners” Stayers’ Handicap Hurdle at Haydock off top-weight and finished just over four lengths behind subsequent Grade 1 winner Crambo. He was last seen finishing second at Cheltenham despite the jockey dropping his whip up the run-in and should give another good account of himself here. Gowel Road was a couple of lengths in front in that Haydock race but found Grade 1 company too hot last time when seventh in the Long Walk Hurdle. It is worth noting that Bold Endeavour benefits from a 2lb swing in the weights with that rival when they meet again here. Dan Skelton’s mare, Nurse Susan, is likely to be popular here as she looked to be an exciting prospect back in 2022, closing the campaign with a fourth-placed finish in The Dawn Run Mares’ Novices’ Hurdle at the Cheltenham Festival. The sevenyear-old unfortunately missed all last season, but notched a determined victory at Cheltenham last time and could still be well-handicapped. The feature race of the day is the Fitzdares Fleur De Lys Chase, which sees the long-awaited return of the top-class L’Homme Presse. A dual Grade 1-winning novice chaser in 2022, including at the Cheltenham Festival, Venetia Williams’ stable star was last seen unseating rider at the final fence in the 2022 King George VI Chase. The nine-year-old has been on the
side-lines since but can hopefully get back on track this season. The six-strong field is headed by fellow Grade 1 winner Protektorat, who was fiercely impressive when landing the Betfair Chase by a wide-margin in 2022. Following a fifth-place finish in last year’s Cheltenham Gold Cup, the nineyear-old faltered in the defence of his crown at Haydock this term but ran a mighty race when staying on for third in a Cheltenham handicap last time from a lofty weight. Whilst he does have to give 4lbs to L’Homme Presse, he does have race fitness on his side. The Grade 2 Download The Racing App Now Lightning Novices’ Chase has thankfully been rescheduled from Friday’s abandoned meeting, and it looks an exciting renewal. Both Djelo and Master Chewy have already proved themselves at this level and notched up a Grade 2 win already, with the former unbeaten in three starts over fences. Venetia Williams’ six-year-old outstayed Master Chewy up to the line at Aintree on chase debut and has only gotten better with every start since. The drop back in trip should be of no concern, and he sets the standard. Joe Tizzard’s JPR One could perhaps count himself unlucky to not also be a graded winner, unseating at the final fence at Cheltenham on his penultimate start when looking a likely winner before another momentum-halting mistake in the Henry VIII Novices’ Chase saw him weaken into third at Sandown last time. Pembroke was the sole finisher of a stamina-sapping contest at Aintree last time, but this drop back in trip is not sure to suit. Keengoing front-runner Matata was just
collared late on at Cheltenham last time, but he clearly holds plenty of potential and can get into another nice rhythm under Daryl Jacob. The Download The Racing App Now Godstone Handicap Chase has attracted a competitive field, and Jane Williams’ Saint Segal will be looking to bounce back from a final fence fall when a length ahead at Ascot last time. A free-going horse, the six-year-old still has plenty of scope for improvement from a mark of 139. First Flow takes his chance from a lofty mark of 158 and must give stacks of weight away to the whole field. The 12-year-old has shown little signs of slowing down, finishing second on all of his last three starts, but may find this trip a little on the short side. Frero Banbou’s last victory was over two years ago, but that did come over course and distance, and he has slid to a tempting mark despite some good efforts in defeat this term. Jonjo O’Neill’s Regal Blue is the most unexposed runner in the Fitzdares Surrey National Handicap Chase, keeping on well late in both of his chase starts over the intermediate trip, and could have the most improvement to come hiked up in distance. The seven-year-old races off the same mark as when second behind a progressive type at Haydock last time and should relish this test. Kerry Lee’s Not Sure stuck it out well to be one of the five finishers in the Welsh Grand National last time and is well worth another crack at this sort of trip. Written by

KINGSTON PRIDE was an expensive purchase on the back of a point win and, while this sort of speed test might not be ideal, he should have the ability to make a successful start under Rules. Castle Ivers is two from two (including a point) and looks an obvious danger, while Habibi is worthy of consideration following a positive start at Newbury.

PREMIER PROFILE DASHEL DRASHER The first running of Lingfield’s Fleur de Lys Chase in 2022 did just want was had been planned by race organisers – the race attracted a competitive field of seasoned chasers, who between them boasted an average BHA rating of 153, and it concluded with a thrilling head-bobbing three-way finish. Six went to post, but by the time the field had swung around to the last fence those in with a chance of victory had been narrowed down to three – the Kim Bailey-trained Two For Gold, the Grade 1 Ascot Chase winner and Jeremy Scotttrained Dashel Drasher, and the imposing grey Bristol de Mai; the trio jumped the last upsides and all were in with a chance of glory. In a rousing run to the line, Dashel Drasher initially pushed his head in front, but was denied on the line by Two For Gold’s final nosenudging effort. The Racing Post reported that the second horse, carrying a 6lb penalty for his previous top-level success, had gone “down on his sword”. The Irish-bred Two For Gold, who went on from Lingfield to finish second in the Ascot Chase, is out of the Shernazar mare Two Of Each,
Dashel Drasher ridden by jockey Rex Dingle win The 2023 Coral Long Distance Hurdle.
winner of an Irish point-to-point, while Dashel Drasher is out of the five-time-winning British pointing mare So Long (Nomadic Way) and was bred by Scott’s wife Camilla. “The pedigree has been in the family for a long, long time, I sort of inherited Dashel’s granddam Cherry Picker,” recalls Scott. “We then bred his dam So Long and she point-to-pointed for us. She went from maiden success to open victory in one season winning five races along the way, that takes a bit of doing.” So Long retired to the paddocks and, after producing two fillies by Volochine and Needle Gun, the family mare was sent to visit the stallion Passing Glance, winner of the Group 3 Diomed Stakes and a mile Group 2 in Germany. The stallion now stands at Batsford Stud but then was with David and Kathleen Holmes at Pitchell Stud. Passing Glance has subsequently become a successful Britishbased NH sire, but in 2012, when Scott was making breeding plans for her mare, his first crop were still only five-year-olds. Some early racing results, however, were indicating that the son of Polar Falcon might be a worthy
addition to the breeding shed – that spring Ataglance won the Martin Pipe Conditional Jockeys’ Handicap Hurdle at The Festival before going on to Listed hurdle success at Aintree. “Passing Glance was a tough and sound racehorse, and he has shown that he improves his mares,” explains Scott of her choice of equine suitor, adding: “As we were breeding to race rather than commercially for the sale ring, it makes quite a difference as to what you can chose. For the sale ring you’ve got use whatever sire is in fashion, and that might not necessarily be right for your mare. “So Long is quite compact, short and square, and Passing Glance is tall and leggy so I wanted to improve on her and it made sense physically.” Once baby Dashel arrived there was no need for the Scotts to tout for a customer – owners Bridget Tally and Richard Lark, who had been involved with So Long, returned to enjoy the action with her son, maintaining the continuity and longevity which has been such a feature of the Dashel story. “Right from when he was born, he was always a nice sort,” smiles Scott. “In training he has always been very straightforward and easy. He hasn’t got any sides to him other than he does like to be in front at home – his place is at the head of affairs and doesn’t see why
he should be behind anyone else! “But he is so tough. For horses to come back season after season in these top races they’ve got to be tough, really tough, and they’ve got to want to do it. I think that shows a lot of mental and physical toughness. When we bred him, we were hoping to get a winner, but he has done so much more for us.” That robust nature cannot be disputed. Dashel has run 30 times, won 12 races and finished second and third another 12 times – meaning that in 80 per cent of his races he has finished in the first three. He has earned over £400,000 in prize-money. He has won a Grade 1 over fences, and a Grade 2 over hurdles. He also finished second in last year’s Grade 1 Stayers’ Hurdle at The Festival. Over the years, this hardy outlook and tough disposition has seen Dashel, now an 11-year-old, endear himself to race goers and he is something of a firm fan favourite. The last two foals out of the retired So Long were both colts and, unsurprisingly, are both by Passing Glance, while the mare’s 2011 second-born filly named Lady Longshot has been retained and is now producing herself. She has two foals on her breeding record; it does not take a pedigree expert to work out who is their daddy. Written by

LONGEST TRAVELLER: MOKA DE VASSY trained by J Williams, South Molton, 195 miles. RACE SUMMARY
NURSE SUSAN remains low mileage in handicaps and looks to have been let off relatively lightly for last month’s Cheltenham success, so she’s taken to land this valuable prize at the chief expense of Nicky Henderson’s consitent Bold Endeavour. The majority of the remainder have to something to recommend them, with Ramo the narrow pick to complete the placings, having built a solid recent record in staying handicaps. 1-2-3: 1.NURSE SUSAN (FR) 2.BOLD ENDEAVOUR 3.RAMO (FR) KEY colours

L’HOMME PRESSE makes his eagerly-awaited return and given his excellent record when fresh he gets a confident vote. Dan Skelton’s Protektorat put up a high-class display when third off an official mark of 165 in a Cheltenham handicap last time though so should ensure Venetia Williams’top-class chaser doesn’t have things all his own way. This trip looks more suitable for Inthewaterside so he needs to go on the shortlist, with Canty Bay another of firm interest in what looks a strong race for the grade.
