Established in 1932, the event serves as a trial for The Epsom Derby and The Epsom Oaks later this month, and welcomes some of the highest quality British Horseracing in the country. Today’s programme will feature four handicap races on the flat turf, the Listed Derby Trial Stakes, the Listed Oaks Trial Stakes, as well as an Arabian race to finish the fixture.
Our thanks must go our sponsors, William Hill, and to the connections of all of this afternoon’s runners including the owners, trainers and racing staff from both the UK and Ireland.
Off the track, we hope you take advantage of all entertainment on offer throughout the afternoon, including live music from Fully Funktional, as well as delicious food & drink to enjoy around the racecourse.
From all of the team at Lingfield Park, we would like to wish you the best for this afternoon, and we hope you enjoy the Derby & Oaks Trials. Our next feature raceday is the first of our Summer Sounds fixtures, Soultown Racenight on Saturday 1st June, which offers an action-packed card of races before dancing the night away to a live performance of classic soul tunes. We have an exciting summer ahead of us with more Lingfield Summer Sounds; 7 Saturday fixtures from JuneSeptember featuring epic horse racing action combined with live music and entertainment. Nothing matters more to us when racing than the safety and welfare of both horse and rider. Central to that is the track itself and our groundstaff do everything in their power to provide an optimum racing surface On duty today we also have a dedicated and experienced team of highly-qualified Vets, Doctors and Paramedics following the action at every stage. Their key responsibility is to monitor and provide care to the competitors throughout their time at the racecourse. to enable safe transport of a horse from the track to our on-site veterinary treatment facility for further treatment, or to the nearest equine referral hospital

Please do not assume the worst if screens are erected around a horse. We are fully committed to minimizing risk in our sport, to dealing professionally and efficiently with any injury, and to maintaining the highest possible quality of care for the horses and jockeys racing here today. KEY Owner Breeding Breeder Jockey Trainer Sponsor Star Ratings Explained
Each horse has been given a star rating, these are defined below:
HHHHH Selected to win the race.
HHHHI Good chance of being placed
HHHII By no means out of the reckoning but at least one or two hold stronger
claims
HHIII Unlikely to win but not totally without hope HIIII Can be given little or no chance
OFFICIAL BHA RATINGS EXPLAINED
The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability
The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances).
The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating
WHERE TO BET
There are a variety of places to bet at the course; The Tote has selling points throughout the racecourse - easily identified by the Tote Betting or totepool signs
The bookmakers are located in front of the grandstand in the ‘Betting Ring’. The bookmakers display their odds for each race and compete to offer the best price to customers. These are fixed price bets and the amount of your winnings will be printed on your betting slip. Search around to get the best price for your selection.
Minimum Stakes
The Tote has a minimum bet of £2. The bookmakers vary but if they have a minimum it will be shown on the boards displaying their odds. If in doubt – just ask.

HANDICAPS EXPLAINED
Around 60 per cent of all races run in Britain each year are handicaps. But what actually is a handicap?
In simple terms, they are races where the runners carry different weights to give them an equal chance of winning. So how are the weights calculated?
Once a horse has run at least three times in a Flat race, or run in no more than two Flat races in Britain and won at least one of them, they will be allocated an Official Rating, also known as a handicap mark. This rating is calculated by a team of professional handicappers employed by the British Horseracing Authority and is based on the level of form shown.
In subsequent races if a horse runs better than it’s rating then it may well be raised and likewise if it performs below it’s rating then it will be reduced.
Ratings start from around 30 at the lower end of the scale with the average top level horses rated roughly between 115 and 125. These ratings are converted to lbs for handicap purposes.
Most handicaps are designed for horses within a specific range, for example those rated between 71 & 85.
So the rating not only decides the weight that a horse will carry, it also decides which races it can run in.
In this instance a horse rated 85 is 5 higher than a horse rated 80 so considered 5lb better and hence carries 5lb more in the race. In theory, the weight difference should see them cross the line together. Without handicaps, the best horses would almost always win. The guarantee of a winner may sound attractive but ultimately uncompetitive races would negatively impact Owners, Racegoers and Bookmakers.

ABBREVIATIONS EXPLAINED
You will occasionally see letters after a horse’s form figures in the racecard today - for example 45-2301 CD BF. But what do these actually mean and why are they shown?
C Stands for course and simply means that the horse has previously won here at this course. You may have heard the phrase ‘Horses for courses’ which implies that some horses perform better at certain racecourses. Therefore, previous winning form here may suggest that it will run well again today.
D Stands for distance and means that the horse has won over the same distance it is racing over today but at another racecourse. So today’s distance should suit.
CD Stands for course and distance so not only has the horse previously won here but when doing so it also won over the same distance that it is racing over today. So, winning form over today’s course and distance may indicate that another strong performance is on the cards.
C D If there is gap between the C and the D it means that the horse has previously won here and also won over the same distance that it is racing over today but at another racecourse. So today’s distance should suit and the horse will also be suited by the course.
BF Stands for Beaten Favourite. Advises that a horse was well-fancied in the past but despite being sent off favourite it failed to win. This can be off-putting to some punters especially if it is sent off favourite again today.
So now when you run through today’s runners and riders in the racecard you can identify which horses run well at this course and those which will be well suited by the distance that they are racing over.

DISTANCES EXPLAINED
Races on the flat are run over a range of different distances. The shortest distance is 5 furlongs which is often referred to as ‘the minimum trip’. Races usually go up in 1 furlong increments although it can be parts of a furlong depending on the configuration of each racecourse. For example, races classed as being run over 6 furlongs at Redcar are actually run over 5 furlongs and 217 yards - 3 yards short of the official distance but this isn’t unique on British racecourses.
You may be fooled into thinking that the 2 miles and 4 furlongs Gold Cup at Royal Ascot is the longest race on the flat in Britain but it is in fact another Royal Ascot race that holds the record. The Queen Alexandra Stakes is run over a stamina-sapping distance of 2 miles and 6 furlongs.
Horse racing in Britain dates back hundreds of years so it is hardly surprising that we still use a few historic terms when it comes to the sport. But what exactly is a furlong? In simple terms, a furlong equates to 220 yards or just over 200 metres.

RACE SUMMARY
An interesting maiden with the debutants likely to have the edge if straight enough. Delicatesse’s stable is in red hot form, but on last year’s evidence she’ll do better back in handicaps, whilst Pharitz Lahia’s dam needed a few runs to get off the mark and likely she’ll be the same Phil Collington has three nicely bred types too, with the colts making most appeal On pedigree they should be well suited to conditions with a narrow preference for MOBAASHER, who could make his age allowance tell
