Star Ratings Explained Each horse has been given a star rating, these are defined below: HHHHH Selected to win the race. HHHHI Good chance of being placed. HHHII By no means out of the reckoning but at least one or two hold stronger claims

HHIII Unlikely to win but not totally without hope. HIIII Can be given little or no chance.

OFFICIAL BHA RATINGS EXPLAINED The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances). The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in nonhandicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating. For novice steeple chasers, the latest hurdle race rating may be shown until such time as the Handicappers allot a separate steeple chase rating. Such ratings are prefixed by the letter h.

RACE SUMMARY The vote goes to ONE NIGHT IN MILAN, who didn’t need any great progress to get off the mark in this sphere at Ayr 15 days ago. Keith Dalgleish’s charge is very lightly raced for his age, and he should have more to offer back up to 2m. Major Snugfit is clearly thriving on racing at present so he’s feared most, ahead of Yagood. 1-2-3: 1.ONE NIGHT IN MILAN (IRE) 2.MAJOR SNUGFIT 3.YAGOOD (IRE) KEY colours

Not nearly so competitive as the numbers suggest, and course-winner POCKET THE PROFIT is impossible to side against as he bids to rack up a quick-fire five-timer under a treble penalty. Brazen Akoya chased home George Boughey’s thriving gelding at Wolverhampton earlier in the month and again rates second best, with Bondi Girl appealing as the pick of the remainder for place purposes.

HORSE WELFARE Here at Newcastle Racecourse nothing matters more to us than looking after the horses that make us the North East’s Premier Racecourse. We do everything in our power to ensure that we provide a racing surface of the highest quality and we take every conceivable care to minimise the chances of horses incurring any injury whilst here. Regrettably, as in any highly competitive sport, there are occasions when something goes wrong and horses have to be given the very best veterinary care. There are three Veterinary Surgeons here today to ensure that should any horse need help they will be attended to within seconds of any incident occurring. Their first priority is to make a rapid diagnosis and to help them do this our groundstaff team will erect screens around any horse that needs attention. Once the diagnosis is made, one of our horse ambulances will attend the scene and will transport the horse back to the stables where further treatment and assessment can be undertaken. Occasionally, it may be that the nature of the injury is such that a horse is unable to make a recovery. If this is the case the Veterinary team may take the decision to put the horse down straight away. In these circumstances we should remember that the horse’s welfare comes first and that this option is kindest for the horse. LONGEST TRAVELLER: WORLDLY WISE trained by I Mohammed, Newmarket, 241 miles. RACE SUMMARY

TAMASKA is enjoying a fine season with four victories already and his latest effort over C&D suggested he hasn’t finished improving yet, so he appeals as the most persuasive option. Key Look hasn’t always been the most dependable, but is shaping up well at present so needs taking seriously. Northbound will prove suited by a return to this trip and completes the shortlist.
