Star Ratings Explained Each horse has been given a star rating, these are defined below: HHHHH Selected to win the race. HHHHI Good chance of being placed. HHHII By no means out of the reckoning but at least one or two hold stronger claims

HHIII Unlikely to win but not totally without hope. HIIII Can be given little or no chance.

OFFICIAL BHA RATINGS EXPLAINED The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances). The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in nonhandicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating. For novice steeple chasers, the latest hurdle race rating may be shown until such time as the Handicappers allot a separate steeple chase rating. Such ratings are prefixed by the letter h.

LONGEST TRAVELLER: ANGE ENDORMI trained by B Pauling, Bourton-on-the-Water, 252 miles. RACE SUMMARY

A tricky opener to solve but RIBEYE was in the process of showing improved form when departing late at Catterick 10 days ago so, as long as he’s none the worse from that spill, he can make amends here. Our Idic Boy could give the selection most to think about on return from a 3-month break provided his wayward finishing effort at Ludlow was just a one-off, ahead of Ange Endormi and Freethinker. 1-2-3: 1.RIBEYE 2.OUR IDIC BOY (IRE) 3.ANGE ENDORMI (IRE) KEY colours

RACE SUMMARY

CHORAL WORK ran out a comfortable winner at Taunton last month, and with further improvement on the cards, she looks up to defying a penalty. Galahad Threepwood has shown fairly useful form on the level, so should be up to making his presence felt in a race of this nature over hurdles, with Andre Le Notre another to consider having offered something to work on in a Musselburgh bumper recently.

EDMOND DANTES overhauled the improving Radetsky March with comfort at Market Rasen towards the end of last month, so he’s a confident choice to go in again with further progress on the cards. IVocaliser is the likeliest to capitalise if the selection fluffs his lines, although an improved showing from Thundersockssundae would come as no great surprise. 1-2-3: 1.EDMOND DANTES (FR) 2.VOCALISER (IRE) 3.THUNDERSOCKSSUNDAE (IRE) KEY colours

HORSE WELFARE Here at Newcastle Racecourse nothing matters more to us than looking after the horses that make us the North East’s Premier Racecourse. We do everything in our power to ensure that we provide a racing surface of the highest quality and we take every conceivable care to minimise the chances of horses incurring any injury whilst here. Regrettably, as in any highly competitive sport, there are occasions when something goes wrong and horses have to be given the very best veterinary care.

Occasionally, it may be that the nature of the injury is such that a horse is unable to make a recovery. If this is the case the Veterinary team may take the decision to put the horse down straight away. In these circumstances we should remember that the horse’s welfare comes first and that this option is kindest for the horse. There are three Veterinary Surgeons here today to ensure that should any horse need help they will be attended to within seconds of any incident occurring. Their first priority is to make a rapid diagnosis and to help them do this our groundstaff team will erect screens around any horse that needs attention. Once the diagnosis is made, one of our horse ambulances will attend the scene and will transport the horse back to the stables where further treatment and assessment can be undertaken.
