WELCOME & MEET THE TEAM
I am delighted to welcome you all to Newcastle Racecourse for The Gosforth Park Cup Night, the second day of the Northumberland Plate Festival. My thanks go to Pertemps and JenningsBet for their generous sponsorship of today’s races. I would like to wish their Directors, Management and guests an enjoyable and successful evening of racing. This evening features a host of excellent races, with the competition looking fierce. Expect a blisteringly quick affair when the sprinters runners take on the £50,000 JenningsBet Gosforth Park Cup over five furlongs, and then later on the card we stage the £60,000 JenningsBet Hoppings Stakes, which is a Group 3 event and has attracted a line-up of top quality fillies. After racing, stick around to enjoy one of the music scene’s best-known names for more than three decades, Judge Jules for a 90 minute set. Tomorrow is the most famous race meeting of the year at Newcastle, The Northumberland Plate Day. The day features top class racing, including the historic Northumberland Plate and the Group 3 Chipchase Stakes. Gates will open at 11:00am with our first race at 1:15pm and the last race of at 5:13pm. A strict traffic management system is in place throughout the festival, please follow directional signage and police instructions to ensure a safe and comfortable journey to and from the racecourse. Full details available from the racecourse on 0191 236 2020. From the team and myself here at Newcastle Racecourse, we wish you all an enjoyable and successful evening at the racecourse. Good luck! Star Ratings Explained Each horse has been given a star rating, these are defined below: HHHHH Selected to win the race. HHHHI Good chance of being placed. HHHII By no means out of the reckoning but at least one or two hold stronger claims
HHIII Unlikely to win but not totally without hope. HIIII Can be given little or no chance.
OFFICIAL BHA RATINGS EXPLAINED The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances). The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in nonhandicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating. For novice steeple chasers, the latest hurdle race rating may be shown until such time as the Handicappers allot a separate steeple chase rating. Such ratings are prefixed by the letter h.
