WELCOME & MEET THE TEAM

Welcome to Newcastle Racecourse for the social highlight of the year, the Gainford Group Beeswing Ladies Day. My thanks go to Gainford Group for their generous sponsorship of Ladies Day. I would like to wish their Directors, Management and guests an enjoyable and successful day of racing. I would also like to extend my thanks to The European Breeders’ Fund for sponsoring on today’s card. We have a wonderful day of racing ahead, with the feature race being the historic Gainford Group ‘Beeswing’ Ladies Day Handicap Stakes, named after one of the greatest female racehorses of all time, and a regular victor of the greatest races at Newcastle Racecourse in the 1800s. Good luck to all the contestants competing for the winning title of the Style Awards, we look forward to the finalists judging after the third race in the Winners Enclosure. We hope you also enjoy MASSAOKE hosted by Rosie Ramsay LIVE after racing, commencing at approximately 5.30pm. A strict traffic management system is in place today, please follow directional signage and police instructions to ensure a safe and comfortable journey from the racecourse this evening. The free shuttle bus service will be running after racing until 8.30pm, leaving from Goals Soccer Centre car park and dropping off at Regent Centre and Four Lane Ends Metro Stations, with some buses going direct to the Official After Parties at both Aveika and Livello located on the quayside. From the team and myself here at Newcastle Racecourse, we wish you all an enjoyable and successful day at the racecourse. Good luck! Paul Elliott EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR

Star Ratings Explained Each horse has been given a star rating, these are defined below: HHHHH Selected to win the race. HHHHI Good chance of being placed. HHHII By no means out of the reckoning but at least one or two hold stronger claims

HHIII Unlikely to win but not totally without hope. HIIII Can be given little or no chance.

OFFICIAL BHA RATINGS EXPLAINED The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances). The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in nonhandicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating. For novice steeple chasers, the latest hurdle race rating may be shown until such time as the Handicappers allot a separate steeple chase rating. Such ratings are prefixed by the letter h.

You must be 18 or over to place a bet You may be asked to provide proof of your age when placing a bet If you cannot produce this your bet will not be accepted

RACE SUMMARY

REAL TERMS is still lightly raced for her age and having found plenty to make a successful reappearance at Carlisle earlier in the month, she’s taken to follow up in a race that should be run to suit. Life On The Rocks could resume progress after a break, so he’s considered a danger and a big run from Virgo would come as no great surprise on his reappearance. 1-2-3: 1.REAL TERMS 2.LIFE ON THE ROCKS (IRE) 3.VIRGO (IRE) KEY colours

LONGEST TRAVELLER: ELUSIVE ARTIST trained by T Carroll, Cropthorne, 244 miles. RACE SUMMARY

The handicapper has dropped ODD SOCKS HAVANA 2lb for his latest run over C&D and he can turn around form with Thaayer, who was narrowly ahead of him on that occasion, and land a third win of the year. Michael Herrington’s charge is more consistent than most at this level and is feared most ahead of Iron Sheriff, who ran well on turf last weekend. 1-2-3: 1.ODD SOCKS HAVANA 2.THAAYER 3.IRON SHERIFF (IRE) KEY

SHAHBAZ showed plenty of ability in a race that has worked out well atYarmouth back in May, so he’s fancied to make his second start a winning one with improvement on the cards. Solutre produced another promising effort when runner-up at Leicester last month and is considered the main threat, with Serious Look the pick of the newcomers before market clues.

HORSE WELFARE Here at Newcastle Racecourse nothing matters more to us than looking after the horses that make us the North East’s Premier Racecourse. We do everything in our power to ensure that we provide a racing surface of the highest quality and we take every conceivable care to minimise the chances of horses incurring any injury whilst here. Regrettably, as in any highly competitive sport, there are occasions when something goes wrong and horses have to be given the very best veterinary care. There are three Veterinary Surgeons here today to ensure that should any horse need help they will be attended to within seconds of any incident occurring. Their first priority is to make a rapid diagnosis and to help them do this our groundstaff team will erect screens around any horse that needs attention. Once the diagnosis is made, one of our horse ambulances will attend the scene and will transport the horse back to the stables where further treatment and assessment can be undertaken. Occasionally, it may be that the nature of the injury is such that a horse is unable to make a recovery. If this is the case the Veterinary team may take the decision to put the horse down straight away. In these circumstances we should remember that the horse’s welfare comes first and that this option is kindest for the horse. To find out more about our Equine Welfare policy please visit our website www.newcastle-racecourse.co.uk
