HORSE WELFARE

Here at Newcastle Racecourse nothing matters more to us than looking after the horses that make us the North East’s Premier Racecourse We do everything in our power to ensure that we provide a racing surface of the highest quality and we take every conceivable care to minimise the chances of horses incurring any injury whilst here.

Regrettably, as in any highly competitive sport, there are occasions when something goes wrong and horses have to be given the very best veterinary care.

There are three Veterinary Surgeons here today to ensure that should any horse need help they will be attended to within seconds of any incident occurring Their first priority is to make a rapid diagnosis and to help them do this our groundstaff team will erect screens around any horse that needs attention. Once the diagnosis is made, one of our horse ambulances will attend the scene and will transport the horse back to the stables where further treatment and assessment can be undertaken. Occasionally, it may be that the nature of the injury is such that a horse is unable to make a recovery If this is the case the Veterinary team may take the decision to put the horse down straight away In these circumstances we should remember that the horse’s welfare comes first and that this option is kindest for the horse

RACE SUMMARY

The vote goes toWRENTHORPE, who has slipped a long way in the weights and left the impression that he could be about to strike when a close fourth at Nottingham last month. With just 2 runs on the all-weather under his belt (performed respectably on both occasions), he remains unexposed on artificial surfaces. Never Dark failed to fire over C&D last time but will be a live danger if able to bounce back, while Speedacus is likely to come good for David O’Meara at some point.

RACE SUMMARY

GOING UNDERGROUND finally opened his account when seeing off Prince Hector over C&D last month and probably would’ve followed up back here 11 days ago but for traffic problems He did well to finish just 1/2-length adrift of the winner Mintnthat that day and should have little trouble reversing those placings granted better luck. Reclaim Victory was sixth in the same C&D handicap but she may also turn the tables on Mintnthat this time, provided she gets away on terms.

RACE SUMMARY

ELIGIBLE did the job well when resuming winning ways at Southwell last month and it’s unlikely that a 5lb rise will be enough to prevent him from striking again. As ever in races restricted to amateur riders, the booking of Serena Brotherton is an added bonus. Rory is holding his form well and could be the one to follow the selection home, while Belle Fourche and Golden Apollo should both be on the premises, too.
