Evening
Whether you’re a first-time visitor or a seasoned racing enthusiast, we hope you have an enjoyable experience with us today.
My thanks to go to today’s race sponsors Betfair, Weatherbys, Sky Sports Racing and The Peacock Family I would like to wish their Directors, Management and guests an enjoyable and successful day of racing
We have a wonderful day of racing ahead along with entertainment from the band of the Royal Regiment of Fusiliers for you all to enjoy.
The 2022 renewal of the Betfair Fighting Fifth Hurdle is set to be another fantastic race, with Nicky Henderson’s former Champion Hurdle winner Epatante bidding to become only the third three time winner of the Grade One contest, alongside Comedy of Errors and Bird’s Nest. Epatante takes on four rivals including fellow Betfair Fighting Fifth Hurdle winner Not So Sleepy, with whom she dead heated last year, and the locally trained Tommy’s Oscar and Voix Du Reve. All eyes will, however, be on Epatante’s stablemate Constitution Hill, an emphatic winner of the 2022 Supreme Novices’ Hurdle at the Cheltenham Festival and a red hot favourite this afternoon.
Please follow directional traffic signage to ensure a safe and comfortable journey from the racecourse this afternoon. We have shuttle buses running after the last race to both Regents Centre and Four Lane Ends Metro Stations LA Taxis have a rank onsite where taxis can be collected, or you can call them on 0191 287 7777.
From the team and I here at Newcastle Racecourse, we wish you all an enjoyable and successful day at the racecourse Good Luck!

OFFICIAL BHA RATINGS
EXPLAINED
The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions.
A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances). The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in nonhandicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating For novice steeple chasers, the latest hurdle race rating may be shown until such time as the Handicappers allot a separate steeple chase rating Such ratings are prefixed by the letter h.

Ascot’s loss is very much Newcastle’s gain. With last season’s imperious Supreme Novices’ Hurdle winner Constitution Hill forced to miss last weekend’s Ascot Hurdle, Nicky Henderson has opted to send him North for today’s feature, the Betfair Fighting Fifth Hurdle Arguably the most exciting National Hunt horse on this side of the Irish Sea, the five-year-old earned a lofty official BHA Rating of 170 after that 22-length demolition of stable-mate Jonbon who went to Aintree and won a Grade 1 and has recently made a successful debut over fences having earlier impressed in two starts at Sandown. Seemingly versatile in terms of ground and track, he has upwards of 12lbs in hand on the opposition and if he is to become a genuine pretender to Honeysuckle’s crown, the son of Blue Bresil probably needs to be winning this with a degree of panache
Henderson, who first struck with Landing Light (2001) and has won the race seven times in total, holds a strong hand, with Epatante looking to emulate Comedy Of Errors and Birds Nest by winning a third Fighting Fifth. Impressive in 2020, she didn’t pick up in the same fashion last year and was forced to share the spoils with Not So Sleepy who is back for another crack After dead-heating with Epatante 12 months ago, he finished last of five behind the same rival at Kempton and was 5½ lengths behind the mare when sixth in the Champion Hurdle The 10-year old isn’t the most straightforward he tried to run out and unseated Paddy Brennan at the first flight two years ago but arrives here on the back of a solid run in the Cesarewitch. Tommy’s Oscar and Voix du Reve complete the field and the former reverts to hurdles after two runs in novice chase company. A strong-traveller, he is capable of getting much closer to both Epatante and Not So Sleepy than when finishing only ninth in the Champion Hurdle Voix du Reve is up against it and will be looking to pick up as much prize money as possible
Elsewhere on the card, Weatherbys proudly sponsor two races, starting with the opening race, the Paul Ferguson’s Jumpers To Follow Introductory Juvenile Hurdle Just six go to post and Cabrakan, who finished runner-up at Exeter last week, is the only runner with any hurdling experience That might prove decisive.
Several nice horses have won the Weatherbys nhstallions.co.uk “The French Furze” Novices’ Hurdle, none more so than 2018 Gold Cup winner Native River. Just four take their chance this year and the most intriguing runner is Mofasa, who looked a bright prospect when winning at Uttoxeter (runner-up won next time) and he confirmed the promise when overcoming a final flight mistake to win at Cheltenham’s October meeting The son of Ocovango looks to be a lovely long-term prospect for Michael Scudamore, who enjoyed one of his biggest victories at this course, when Mysteree carried the same owner’s colours to success in the 2017 Eider Chase. Scudamore boasts a fine 31% strike rate with his runners at Gosforth Park and saddled a double at the last meeting Paul Ferguson

CABRAKAN showed a fair bit of aptitude for hurdling when finishing runner-up at Exeter last Sunday, and with cheekpieces fitted today, Milton Harris’ charge can put that experience to good use and go a place better. HORSE WELFARE
Here at Newcastle Racecourse nothing matters more to us than looking after the horses that make us the North East’s Premier Racecourse We do everything in our power to ensure that we provide a racing surface of the highest quality and we take every conceivable care to minimise the chances of horses incurring any injury whilst here. Regrettably, as in any highly competitive sport, there are occasions when something goes wrong and horses have to be given the very best veterinary care.
There are three Veterinary Surgeons here today to ensure that should any horse need help they will be attended to within seconds of any incident occurring Their first priority is to make a rapid diagnosis and to help them do this our groundstaff team will erect screens around any horse that needs attention Once the diagnosis is made, one of our horse ambulances will attend the scene and will transport the horse back to the stables where further treatment and assessment can be undertaken. Occasionally, it may be that the nature of the injury is such that a horse is unable to make a recovery If this is the case the Veterinary team may take the decision to put the horse down straight away. In these circumstances we should remember that the horse’s welfare comes first and that this option is kindest for the horse

During the past 35 years or so Eileen and Bill Peacock enjoyed entertaining many friends, co-owners and trainers in the ‘Gazon’ Box at Newcastle racecourse Sadly with her passing that can no longer be the case so it is to recall the happy memories of such days that husband Bill and sons Tim and Chris have sponsored this race today in her name. Doing so also afforded an opportunity to thank all those at the racecourse who over the years, and in particular more recently David Williamson, Mike Elliott and Amanda, for all their help in making such days so successful and enjoyable.

RACE SUMMARY
CAPTAIN QUINT made it 2-3 under Rules when landing a Hexham handicap chase on debut over fences and, with the promise of better to come from this unexposed 6-y-o, he is taken to shrug off a 5lb rise in the weights Twoshotsoftequila shaped well behind the selection at Hexham and should have a part to play but Broadway Joe, who has proved most consistent since switched to fences, rates the main danger on the back of his encouraging reappearance effort.

FIGHTING FIFTH HURDLE
WE LOOK BACK AT SOME OF THE MEMORABLE WINNERS THAT HAVE HELPED SHAPE THE BETFAIR FIGHTING FIFTH HURDLE INTO ONE OF THE COUNTRIES LEADING HURDLE RACES.
HISTORY
The Fighting Fifth Hurdle was established in 1969, and the inaugural running was won by the Fulke Walmyn-trained Mugatpura. The title refers to the nickname of the Royal Northumberland Fusiliers “The Fighting Fifth”. In the year prior to the race’s launch, the regiment was amalgamated with three others to form the Royal Regiment of Fusiliers. Formerly classed at Grade 2 level, the Fighting Fifth Hurdle was promoted to a Grade 1 in 2004, and it is now the first top-grade hurdle race of the British National Hunt season.
The Fighting Fifth is the first leg in the Road to Cheltenham, a series of races which includes the International Hurdle at Cheltenham and the Champion Hurdle Trial at Haydock Park, and culminates in the Champion Hurdle at the Cheltenham Festival.
1976, 1977 & 1979 BIRDS NEST
The winner of 19 hurdle races, Birds Nest won three renewals of the Fighting Fifth Hurdle. He also won three Bula Hurdles, the Christmas Hurdle and two runnings of the Scottish Champion Hurdle, beating some of the best hurdlers of the time He ran six times in the Champion Hurdle finishing second in 1976 and third in 1980 and has been described as the best hurdler never to win the Champion Hurdle
1998 & 1999 DATO STAR
The winner of the Champion Bumper at the Festival in 1995, Dato Star went on to win back-to-back renewals of the Fighting Fifth for Malcolm Jefferson. He also won the Grade 1 Christmas Hurdle in 1999
1978 & 1980
SEA PIGEON
Truly the horse of a lifetime In a career which lasted from 1972 until 1981 he competed in eighty-five races, winning an incredible thirty-seven times under both codes for trainers Jeremy Tree, Gordon Richards & for Peter Easterby.
In addition to his brace of wins in the Fighting Fifth, he won back-to-back renewals of the Champion Hurdle in 1980 & 1981, the Scottish and Welsh Champion Hurdles, back-to-back renewals of the Chester Cup in 1977 & 1978 and the prestigious Ebor Handicap in 1979 making him arguably one the most versatile racehorses in modern times.
1972, 1973 & 1974 COMEDY OF ERRORS
One of the most successful horses in the 52 year history of the Fighting Fifth Hurdle having won it three years in succession between 1972 and 1974
In 1973 Comedy Of Errors won his first Champion Hurdle, beating Bula who had won the race in 1971 and 1972 He finished runner-up to Lanzarote at the 1974 Festival but returned to regain his title in 1975
The 1970’s really were a decade full of top class hurdlers making the Fred Rimelltrained gelding’s achievements all the more spectacular
1989 KRIBENSIS
By the Derby winner Henbit, Kribensis was sent into training with Sir Michael Stoute in Newmarket no doubt with a career on the flat in mind.
But it was over hurdles where he really excelled winning the Triumph Hurdle in 1988. The following season he became the only horse to win the Fighting Fifth, Christmas Hurdle and Champion Hurdle in the same season a trio of races considered to be the Triple Crown of Hurdling.
In 2008/09, Punjabi came close to matching Kribensis’ feat, winning the Fighting Fifth and Champion Hurdle, but came up short in the Christmas Hurdle Kribensis is one of only three horses, along with Persian War and Katchit, to have won the Triumph Hurdle and Champion Hurdle during their career
2017 & 2018
BUVEUR D’AIR
Unbeaten in two starts in his native France, Buveur d’Air established himself as one of the greatest hurdlers in recent memory Since 2015 he won it all. His back-to-back wins in the Fighting Fifth were added to with two Champion Hurdles, an Aintree Hurdle, a Christmas Hurdle, a Punchestown Hurdle and not forgetting three Contenders Hurdles which seemed to be his regular warm up for the Champion Hurdle in March. By the end of the 2021 season he had amassed prize money of £1.23 million.
The Royal Regiment Of Fusiliers was formed on St George’s Day 23rd April 1968, by the amalgamation of The Royal Northumberland Fusiliers, The Royal Warwickshire Fusiliers, The Royal Fusiliers and The Lancashire Fusiliers.

It shouldn’t be a shock that 8 of the last 11 winners of today’s feature had finished 1st or 2nd on their most recent start. Only Irving bucks this trend having fallen prior to winning here in 2014 before finishing 4th when regaining his title in 2016, along with Epatante last year who was last seen finishing 3rd in the Irish Champion Hurdle.
On the whole Grade 1 races do tend to attract the best horses, so it is not surprising that it is usually the higher rated horses which come to the fore. Cornerstone Lad was the lowest rated winner in 2019 off an official rating of 148 whilst Buveur d’Air was the highest rated in both 2017 and 2018 off a lofty mark of 169.
Go Native sprung a 25/1 surprise in 2009 but after that those towards the head of the betting had held sway. Four favourites and three second favourites landed the spoils since then with the other two winners at a modest 6/1. But is the tide turning? Cornerstone Lad popped up at 16/1 in 2019 and Not So Sleepy dead-heated at 18/1 last year.
Buveur d’Air proved a fly in the ointment when winning as a seven-yearold in 2018. Overall, five and six-year-olds have the best record having won seven of the last 11 renewals. Younger winners are rare but older winners do pop up Sea Pigeon was 10 when he won here in 1980! And last year Not So Sleepy (9) and Epatante (7) also bucked this trend.
Nicky Henderson is the winning most trainer in the race’s 51 year history having won it 7 times - Landing Light (2001), Punjabi (2008), My Tent Or Yours (2013), Buveur d’Air (2017, 2018) & Epatante (2020, 2021). Paul Nicholls (2), Donald McCain (2) and Noel Meade (3) are three other trainers to have tasted success more than once.
CONCLUSION
With ticks in all of the right boxes Constitution Hill should prove hard to beat. Nicky Henderson’s gelding oozed class when running out a 22 length winner of last season’s Supreme at the Festival, making it easy to see why the five-year-old is many peoples idea of the Champion Hurdle winner in March. The chances of stablemate and two-time winner of this race Epatante should not be taken lightly based on three top class efforts at the major festivals last season. Not So Sleepy arrives in form having finished third in the Cesarewitch last month whilst Tommy’s Oscar could outrun his odds after a solid start to the season.

THE BAND OF THE ROYAL REGIMENT OF FUSILIERS
Through music, Service Bands are to sustain and develop the moral component of fighting power, support State Ceremonies and achieve influence in order to further Defence and National interests.
The Band of The Royal Regiment of Fusiliers is one of the 19 bands of the Army Reserve. The Band is based in St George’s Barracks, in the centre of Newcastle upon Tyne, and made up of musicians from across the North East of England (although we have one musician who travels from Scotland). All of the Band’s musicians have full-time civilian employment (including school teachers, civil servants, a railway engineer and a fire fighter) and conduct their musical and military training in their spare time.
The Band is the only remaining band in the British Army that wears the Fusilier cap-badge and iconic red and white hackle and as such played a major role in the events celebrating the 50th anniversary of the formation of The Royal Regiment of Fusiliers in 2018 These events included Freedom Parades in Newcastle, Bury, Salford and Rochdale, and a Beating Retreat in the moat of the Tower of London.
The Band performs to military and civilian audiences around the North East each year and over recent years has performed in venues such as Durham Cathedral, the Sage Gateshead, Hexham Abbey, Newcastle Cathedral, Alnwick Castle and St James’ Park Football Stadium.
In addition to local events throughout the year, the Band deploys on a 16-day Annual Camp The opportunity of having the whole band together for a continuous period allows a higher level of training and sets the band up for the rest of the year It also allows the band to play in venues and at events a little further from home than they normally would.
Over past years the band has conducted Annual Camps in Germany, Cyprus, Romania, Northern Ireland, Edinburgh, Portsmouth, Woolwich and, earlier this year RAF Cosford, the base from where the Band performed at the Tower of London, Windsor Castle, the National Arboretum and the Shrewsbury Flower Show.
Members of the band are also able to break down into smaller ensembles such as a Brass Quintet, a Saxophone Quartet, a team of Fanfare Trumpets and a traditional Dixie Band These smaller ensembles are often called upon to play for formal military functions Recently the Brass Quintet had the fantastic opportunity to play for the British Embassy in Tel Aviv, Israel.
Please follow the band on Facebook where you will find out more about our future events and our recruiting opportunities: www.facebook.com/fusilierband

CONSTITUTION HILL put up a truly sensational performance in the Supreme when beating his stablemate Jonbon by 22 lengths in a ridiculously good time, earning himself Timeform’s highest ever rating for a novice hurdler, and he’s destined for the very top honours in open company. Stablemate Epatante, who gained 3 Grade 1 successes last season, including a dead-heat in this, and was also second in the Champion Hurdle, can follow him home 1-2-3:

RACE SUMMARY
L’HOMME PRESSE enjoyed a terrific novice chasing campaign and looks a genuine Gold Cup contender this time round, and he could make a statement by returning with a big weight-carrying performance in what looks an excellent renewal of this top handicap. Into Overdrive is highly progressive and gets 26lb from the selection, so he’s a big danger, and the likeable Aye Right is worthy of respect as he bids for back-to-back wins in this event.
