Star Ratings Explained

OFFICIAL BHA RATINGS

EXPLAINED

The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions.

A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances). The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in nonhandicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating For novice steeple chasers, the latest hurdle race rating may be shown until such time as the Handicappers allot a separate steeple chase rating Such ratings are prefixed by the letter h.

RACE SUMMARY

SNAKE ROLL has made a promising start to his career and looks capable of defying a penalty back in an ordinary novice. Gege Ville shaped promisingly when finding only one too good on his Ayr hurdling debut and has better to come now moving up in trip, while Vandemere requires a market check for all he’s a latecomer to Rules 1-2-3:

HORSE WELFARE

Here at Newcastle Racecourse nothing matters more to us than looking after the horses that make us the North East’s Premier Racecourse We do everything in our power to ensure that we provide a racing surface of the highest quality and we take every conceivable care to minimise the chances of horses incurring any injury whilst here.

Regrettably, as in any highly competitive sport, there are occasions when something goes wrong and horses have to be given the very best veterinary care.

There are three Veterinary Surgeons here today to ensure that should any horse need help they will be attended to within seconds of any incident occurring Their first priority is to make a rapid diagnosis and to help them do this our groundstaff team will erect screens around any horse that needs attention. Once the diagnosis is made, one of our horse ambulances will attend the scene and will transport the horse back to the stables where further treatment and assessment can be undertaken. Occasionally, it may be that the nature of the injury is such that a horse is unable to make a recovery If this is the case the Veterinary team may take the decision to put the horse down straight away In these circumstances we should remember that the horse’s welfare comes first and that this option is kindest for the horse

Tom Hinton

Tom who was mad on horse racing sadly lost his life in February 2020 due to a short illness. Tom and his wife Theresa travelled all over Europe watching racing.

As a family we would like to wish everyone a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. With this being the third year of sponsoring the race in memory of our beloved Tom, it is nice that we get to take him to another of his favourite local courses here at Newcastle, where he had backed a few winners in his time. We hope everyone has a great day from all of the family.

THE HINTON MEMORIAL MARES’ OPEN NATIONAL HUNT FLAT RACE (CLASS 5) (Category 1 Elimination) (GBB RACE)

Total race value £4800 x Owners Prize Money. 1st £2003, 2nd £1002, 3rd £501, 4th £251. (Penalty Value £2614.08) 2 Balloted Out Under Rules (I)9 and (I)10.

LEADING COURSE TRAINER (17-22): R Menzies (19 wins from 114 runners, 17%) runs LACTARA TRAINER-IN-FORM (LAST 14 DAYS): D Skelton (4 wins from 19 runners, 21%) runs LOLLOBRIGIDA

LONGEST TRAVELLER: DONTYAWANTME trained by F O’Brien, Cheltenham, 257 miles.

RACE SUMMARY

Having dead-heated in a point, DONTYWANTME looks a notable newcomer to Rules for a stable that does well in bumpers, so he gets the nod ahead of Lollobrigida, who is related to winners and represents a top yard. Chalk That Down is another notable newcomer.
