OFFICIAL BHA RATINGS EXPLAINED

The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions.

A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances). The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in nonhandicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating For novice steeple chasers, the latest hurdle race rating may be shown until such time as the Handicappers allot a separate steeple chase rating Such ratings are prefixed by the letter h.

Having had an excuse for his latest run, REGAL RAMBLER is well worth another chance to build on the promise of his previous runner-up effort at Chelmsford and he can get off the mark on his stable debut. RACE SUMMARY

In a contest where few arrive with compelling claims the vote goes to HARDY who has been below par at Wolverhampton and Southwell on his last 2 outings but had been in good form here prior to that and might bounce back returned to this venue. Muatadel and Mr Coco Bean are others to consider, while Inaam may not be the force of old but is still a classy sort for this level and needs keeping a close eye on in the betting back from a 3-month break

HORSE WELFARE

Here at Newcastle Racecourse nothing matters more to us than looking after the horses that make us the North East’s Premier Racecourse We do everything in our power to ensure that we provide a racing surface of the highest quality and we take every conceivable care to minimise the chances of horses incurring any injury whilst here.

Regrettably, as in any highly competitive sport, there are occasions when something goes wrong and horses have to be given the very best veterinary care.

There are three Veterinary Surgeons here today to ensure that should any horse need help they will be attended to within seconds of any incident occurring Their first priority is to make a rapid diagnosis and to help them do this our groundstaff team will erect screens around any horse that needs attention. Once the diagnosis is made, one of our horse ambulances will attend the scene and will transport the horse back to the stables where further

RACE SUMMARY

KRAKEN POWER has a poor strike-rate but is threatening to come good soon after 2 good placed efforts over C&D and he gets the nod for the Jim Goldie/Paul Mulrennan combination. Final Frontier has been a model of consistency of late and heads the dangers along with Minhaaj and Billian.
