Star Ratings Explained
Each horse has been given a star rating, these are defined below:
HHHHH Selected to win the race
HHHHI Good chance of being placed.
HHHII By no means out of the reckoning but at least one or two hold stronger claims
OFFICIAL BHA RATINGS EXPLAINED
HHIII Unlikely to win but not totally without hope. HIIII Can be given little or no chance.
The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions.
A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances). The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in nonhandicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating For novice steeple chasers, the latest hurdle race rating may be shown until such time as the Handicappers allot a separate steeple chase rating Such ratings are prefixed by the letter h. You must be 18 or over to place a bet
You may be asked to provide proof of your age when placing a bet
If you cannot produce this your bet will not be accepted

RACE FIVE
Raceday preview from Weatherbys
A competitive field of seven go to post for the Weatherbys CheltenhamFestivalBettingGuide Handicap Hurdle, and the weights areheadedbySinceDayOne.
Donald McCain’s eight-year-old has not been seen since beaten in match race over fences by a progressive rival at Wetherby last February, perhaps lacking stamina up in trip. He had shown useful form as a novice chaser previously, landingabraceofnovicehandicap chases, thesecondofthosecoming atthistrackfromamarkof136.Four times a winner over hurdles at this course, he clearly loves it around Newcastle and must be of interest fromareducedhurdlesmarkofjust 128, the only caveat being whether he is fit on the back of a lengthy break.
Ben Haslam’s Horn Cape was a course and distance winner
Both Matchless and HornCape are alsocoursewinnersoverhurdles. The former, trained by Jennie Candlish, landedanovicehurdleherein2022 and, after a busy flat campaign over the summer, returned to obstacleswithadeterminedvictory at Musselburgh. The six-year-old
backedthatupwithaclosesecond at Doncaster, before that good run of form ended with a below par effort last time. He didn’t look the most straightforward ride that day, hanging badly up the run-in, and shouldbenefitfromthisshortbreak.
Ben Haslam’s Horn Cape was a course and distance winner on his penultimate start and gave a good account of himself when runner-up last time. The seven-year-old will relish conditions and should again remaincompetitive.
BaronDeMiddletonhasprovedjust as effective over both hurdles and fences and is twice a chase winner at Newcastle. After struggling in Class 2 events to begin the season, theeleven-year-oldbenefittedfrom a drop in class when an impressive all-the-waywinneratMarketRasen last month. A costly error three out, just as the race began to develop, last time caused his finishing effort to peter out, but he should bounce back here. Jason The Militant is winless over timber since a Grade 3 victory three years ago and, whilst he has plenty of class, will have to show more than what he has since, despite a continually sliding mark. I Have A Voice has not been sightedsinceunseatingintheVictor Ludorum at Haydock this time last year. Nigel Hawke’s five-year-old displayed plenty of potential as a juvenile hurdler last term though

Donald McCain’s seven-year-old landed a similar event at Cartmel when last seen in 2022 and, despite being left in the lead at the last, did shape as if he was going best. He must hold solid claims from an unchanged mark, although he is not certain to handle the worsening ground on the back of an extended layoff. After showing little in her first four starts of the season, Stuart Coltherd’s Silver Vision showed greatly improved form when a ready 16-length winner at Kelso on herpenultimatestart.Thefive-yearold perhaps found the race coming too soon when coming home tired at Sedgefield less than two weeks later, butregularpilotEdwardAustin retainstherideonthebackofafour weekbreak.

possess a large engine and should havetheabilitytowinoffthissortof mark. The seven-year-old showed promise when third on chase debut last time, just lacking experience, but reverts to the smaller obstacles here.MisterSmartyhasshownlittle in four hurdles starts so far but is still lightly raced and makes just his secondhandicapstarthere.
Rated 63 on the flat, Adam Nicol’s Purple Gown was far too keen on handicap debut at Sedgefield last time and would have to settle better from a 3lb lower mark here. A 17-length fourth behind recent DublinRacingFestivalscorer,Brucio, isahighlightandshewouldremain of interest as she continues to gain valuable experience. An impressive bumper winner at Sedgefield last term from a now 119-rated rival, Raffles Wonder has been well held in four starts over obstacles. An opening mark of 86 on handicap debut could underestimate the ability of Rebecca Menzies’ sevenyear-old though, and he should provemorecompetitiveatthislevel. Sandy Forster’s Chumlee signed off the last campaign with a really impressive victory over course and distance, surging to a comfortable ten-length success in similar conditions. He is 10lbs higher in the handicap on the return to this courseandshapedasifneedingthe runwhenthirdatKelsolasttime.

RACE SUMMARY
A chance is taken on the fitness of SINCE DAY ONE, who clearly goes well here (4-4 over hurdles and 5-6 overall at this course) and he resumes on a good mark (8lb lower than that off which he landed a handicap chase here last January).
