Star Ratings Explained

Each horse has been given a star rating, these are defined below:

HHHHH Selected to win the race

HHHHI Good chance of being placed.

HHHII By no means out of the reckoning but at least one or two hold stronger claims

OFFICIAL BHA RATINGS EXPLAINED

HHIII Unlikely to win but not totally without hope. HIIII Can be given little or no chance.

The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions.

A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances). The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in nonhandicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating For novice steeple chasers, the latest hurdle race rating may be shown until such time as the Handicappers allot a separate steeple chase rating Such ratings are prefixed by the letter h.

Having landed back-to-back novice events already this year, ACCRUAL has continued the good work in handicaps, again finding only one too good at Chester on his latest outing 26 days ago,, and he’s very much of interest again for his very good yard Thirsk scorer South Parade and low-mileage filly Juicy are others to consider Faro de San Juan and Mattice are just a couple of others to bear in mind.

This is wide open so at the likely odds it is worth siding with WHO’S GLEN to take a sizeable step forward now going handicapping with his stamina drawn out more and get off the mark.

Recent Windsor scorer Night Breeze is feared most under a penalty, with the handily-weighted Corsican Caper and in-form duo Percy Jones and Lexington Knight also very much in the reckoning too.

The Racing League Joker Card

The Joker doubles the points won by the two horses representing the team in a given race. When played, the team receives double points in that given race, but it is not applied to individual jockey points.

Each manager will have the opportunity to play two Jokers during the 2024 competition. One Joker must be played at the team’s designated ‘home fixture’, the other Joker can be played in any of the other 42 races, where at least 12 horses are running (or 11 horses running at Wolverhampton).

The team manager will announce their intention to play a Joker in the Paddock, directly before the selected race This is done by placing a Joker card alongside the team name on the scoreboard in the Paddock.
